It’s six a.m. on a Saturday, and your phone is ringing. It’s your friend calling to tell you the snowstorm that started last night is still going. Get up, grab your planks and your Mountain Hardwear Women’s Dauphine Jacket, stuff some cereal and coffee down your throat, and get in the car.

  • Waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Performance Shell blocks snow so you can ski throughout the storm
  • 60 Grams of PrimaLoft insulation adds a bit of warmth in wet conditions
  • Removable powder skirt keeps powder out and can be left at home during trips downtown
  • Helmet-compatible, insulated hood boosts head warmth, blocks flakes with a beefy brim, and zips off to reduce bulk on clear days

Bottom Line: Pow days.

Boxy Fit

By:
January 14, 2011

I ordered this jacket because my husband as a similar one from Mountain Hardware. I was disappointed when I received mine. The fit was very boxy and the zipper was terrible. Since the jacket zippers at an angle across the chest and the top of the jacket folds over to look somewhat like a peacoat when zippered half way, the coat becomes very difficult to zipper all the way up.

Felt like it would be warm, but not a good idea for skiing or snowboarding.

Great Jacket/Odd Fit

By:

I've discovered that MH doesn't work for me (5'4"/116lb/slender) because the sleeves (31") are way too short in S; when I bend over to tighten my bindings they ride 5" up my arm. I then tried M but the body is too wide. The sleeves (32") are better in length but lack any articulation. It's like the armpit is webbed and attaches to the middle of the jacket body. When I lift my arms it pulls the jacket bottom and gaitor up past my belly button. So sad because the quality and tech features are so wonderful. I need a small with at least a 32" sleeve and all the mountaineering jackets seem to have 31" or less. I found a 686 Dolce Jacket in size S w/ 32" sleeve (as seen in pic over Dauphine), great body fit, but no Gor-tex :( Any suggestions? I'm looking for a jacket with gor-tex (or similar) and insulation, wrist & waist gaitors, adjustable hood w/ backside draw cord, pit zips, fully taped seams, fit that allows movement, and lightweight packability for under $375-Good luck right? Norrona seems great but starts near $500...

Mountain Hardwear Dauphine Jacket

This jacket has everything I wanted. I'm 5' 7" and 140 lbs and got the medium. It fits well and has a bit of room to layer. When I'm skiing or boarding right around freezing temps I wear my under armor and a light-weight smartwool layer underneath and it's perfect.

Pit zips to regulate temperature, soft wrist gaiters to keep snow and cold out, powder skirt, lots of pockets inside to organize including a media pocket with a slit for ear buds to come through. Also the hood cinches down for non-helmet days.

Wouldn't have minded a more feminine cut but was going more for functionality with this jacket and I'm extremely pleased. I love Mountain Hardwear gear! Keeps me warm and dry even when I get stuck in the insane Utah powder.

Definitely worth the price

I'm about 5'5 and 120lbs and ordered a medium. The medium was slightly big, but depending on your layering, a medium may be what you are looking for. But I probably could have gone for a small.

I actually returned this item because of two reasons: firstly, the hood was so big that I couldn't see where I was going with it on. It's obviously meant for a helmet, but even then it's very large. Secondly the jacket itself is not fitted and made me look super boxy. Otherwise the overall fit was nice and I did like the thumb holes in the sleeves.

I only tried the jacket on when I first got it, but the warmth factor seems obvious. It was immediately warm and I imagine it would do great outdoors.

Overall I think this would be a great jacket, but personally I prefer a more fitted look.
