The Mountain Hardwear Men’s Chockstone Softshell Jacket features an ultralight feel and serious breathability to make it the go-to choice on highly aerobic days. A DWR coating adds an extra helping of weather resistance when you get caught without a hardshell. Mountain Hardwear designed this as a stand-alone piece for mellow conditions with the versatility to become a mid-layer in nasty weather.
Can't argue with the price. Breaths pretty well, though there aren't any vents. Stops wind better than a couple more expensive jackets, and is reasonably weather resistant, though I wouldn't use it in anything more than a light rain. would've been nice to have a drawcord at the waist also. One real pro is the durability of this coat.
Rodolfo. The Black Jacket is the same as the other two and the fabric is the same. What is different is the embroidery of the logo which is correct for Fall '10 on the Black Jacket. Also, black jacket was photographed with the hood down and the other two were photographed with the hood up. This is the only difference. Again, the fabric and the jackets are exactly the same. I hope this helps clear up any confusion. Thanks!
I am 6'3" 185lbs, with a really long torso, and the large model is one of the best fitting jackets that I've ever owned. I bought a black model originally and recently ordered a Titanium colored backup from backcountry.com. While the fit is still great, the titanium model uses darker stitching than the body fabric which creates quite a bit of contrast and takes away from the clean lines of the jacket. I recommend sticking with a darker model. Otherwise, the jacket is great! It's light, packs small and sheds water well. Highly recommended if you need a long-fitting jacket.

al. It is a little more slim fitting than some of our other softshells. Due to the stretchy-ness of the fabric most folks seem to appreciate the cut and don't mind the fit. See some of the comments below. Hope this helps!
In about any weather above freezing, when I'm moving hard (like rock climbing or cycling) I will burn up in any sort of fleece lined jacket. Most "soft shells" are this and I find them absolutely useless for this activity. They're heavy and too warm while moving and not warm enough otherwise. This jacket fits tightly, cuts the wind and has a hood (which barely fits over a helmet too!) And its super durable and I won't destroy it. I plan on ski touring in it as soon as a bit more white stuff falls.
The fit is pretty slim, and unusually long, which is good if you are a tall, skinny type. I noticed that while the chest fit of the small and medium size was comparable, the sleeves and overall length of the small were too short.
Well, this is my first soft shell and all I have to say is, meh. No cinching around the wrist, waist, and hood, which is small and kinda funky and looks funny while wearing it. Its also pretty long to be an aerobic type piece of gear. Its kinda got the length of a parka, not a jacket. I can see wearing this around town in a drizzle. But not much more. I bought this on sale and its the only reason Im not taking it back. I like the MH Offwidth alot more, but it has no hood, which is why I went with the Chockstone, aside from the sale price. 3 stars.......barely.
The material certainly is a softshell. It's a lightweight softshell meant to protect you from light rain and moderate winds. Since there is no liner in the jacket the material will be very stretchy. I quite like Mountain Hardwear's softshell fabric and think you'll be quite happy with this jacket.
beautiful jacket, great for those who like things tailored. great length and style but wouldn't use it for anything too technical as it is quite thin. great for everyday wear and layering. i use it more than my other jackets just for everyday wear, but not my go to jacket for a softshell.
also, the zipper end is plastic, and broke after a couple of months of use. had to get it replaced. MH stuff are usually excellent quality, but this was a little disappointing.
how many pockets does this jacket actually have since description says only 1 pocket?--pic looks like there is 1 chest zip pocket and 2 zip hand pockets plus a lrg. pocket in the back? can someone please clarify and is this the same jacket for sale in the outlet...is the titanium color like a light black color?
Al. There is one chest pocket on the left and two hand pockets lower on the jacket. So, 3 in total. There is NOT a large pocket in the back As for the Outlet versus the main Backcountry site... often times they will be selling colors from previous seasons versus in-season colors. Titanium is light gray. Hope this helps!
The jacket is ok, not really what I expected, but a good softshell nonetheless. The hood bunches up at the crown giving off a Beldar Conehead kinda look. Good quality as to be expected from MH but sorta like frozen food, looks great from the aisle, but when all is said and done, it's missing something.
I purchased the titanium color at BC.com. Typical MH jacket fit, slim and athletic, feels good on. I have the large, fits nice.. I'm 5'10" 190. For uses, the MH website lists climbing/athletic, which it could be, with a few minor changes. The pockets are set low, thus bunching under a pack/harness. Probably could have done away with pockets all together. There is no drawcord at the hem, and the stitching/seams on the inside is very bulky. A couple of minor changes and this jacket would be much better, in my opinion. This is a good jacket for fall hiking or maybe snowshoeing with a medium base under. I will leave the climbing/athletic activities to the MH Transition, which has sportier look, feel and function to it. Nice jacket overall.
