Zip up the fitted Mountain Hardwear Women's Castlewood Softshell Jacket for a gusty day of sport climbing. The thumb-loop cuffs and long back give you extra coverage and wind protection, and the flexible fabric won't hinder your next move. When you're nearing the crux and a breeze blows up your jacket, secure your feet and one hand, and yank the hem drawcords. Mountain Hardwear lined the collar and chin guard with soft micro-chamois, so your face won't feel raw at the end of the day. Reflective hits on the front and back of the durable Castlewood Softshell to keep you visible during nighttime runs and bike rides.

Bottom Line: Climb, ride, or run through the wind with this breathable softshell jacket.

Perfect for me

I have had this jacket for about 8 months now, and have worn it in all kinds of weather, so I can give you the 411. It is lightweight, and blocks wind great. I am not sure if it is supposed to be waterproof, but I've worn it in the rain and the water just beads up on top of the fabric-when I come inside, I give it a shake-and voila it is dry. I ride a Harley, but am not into all the fringes and conches-this jacket looks sleek on and very form flattering. I'm 5'8" and a size 12. Two things that make it awesome for riding or traveling, when in a sitting position you can unzip the bottom zipper a bit so the jacket stays in place and this jacket has thumb loops on the sleeve bottoms. The sleeves are cut long enough so that they don't ride up when riding, and gauntlet gloves will fit nicely over the sleeve and thumb loops-so no cold wrists. I have worn this jacket on cold days, but wouldn't recommend it solo-you'll need to layer it-I use the Mountain Hardwear Nitrous jacket with it for our Dakota cold. I get tons of compliments on it whenever I wear it (which is alot). It is formfitting, especially at the hips, but that's not really an issue b/c of the bottom zipper. I often wear t-shirts underneath and have no problems with skin irritation. My only complaint is that I'm not crazy about the hand pocket, it has one which zips. The pocket is placed so that when you open it, your phone/keys/whatever are toward the side of the jacket, and it's very awkward to try to get things out of your pocket. Wish it had two normal hand pockets. The arm pocket is fine, so issues with wind.

The quality was good but the fit wasn't.

I ordered this for my girlfriend and ended up returning it. She is 6' tall and lean, a small was the wrong size. The body of the jacket fit well but was too short in length, the arms were about 3" too short as well. The medium may have been a better choice.

She has changed her mind about wanting a soft shell in leu of a warmer, more versatile, jacket.

All those size specs for your girlfriend (6' tall) reassures me (5'-4" 125lbs) that this brand/make will fit me just fine! Jacket sleeves are always too long & I have really long arms. Thanks for the details on size.

Let's say that I wear a short sleeve shirt under this jacket, will the material bother/iritate my skin?

Cathy. This is a very subjective question. For instance, I wear a T-Shirt with a jacket made out of this material and have not experienced any skin irritation or discomfort. Others may find differently. There is only one way to find out for you!

not what I thought...

By:

I got this for a gift for my sister-in-law. I had previously ordered the BackCountry Shift for me. I was hoping this would be like that one...not so. This jacket is more like a wind-breaker than a soft-shell. It's very cute on, but not the jacket I thought it would be.

If you check out the tech specs... it will tell you that it has two hand pockets and one sleeve pocket which is correct. It is hard to see the second hand pocket in the picture. Cheers!

Green as Envy

By:
October 6, 2008

I got the green one and many people are envious. I love the jacket; it blocks the wind really well. I have gotten a lot of compliments on it, and it fits really well with a woman's curves. Just a note on the pockets...there is only one "hand pocket" and the sleeve pocket does not have a headphone port (but it still fits and ipod just fine).

No Lining?

By:
November 9, 2009

This just a vinyl wind-breaker. If you like the feeling of plastic against your skin, then I guess this is the jacket for you. The sleeves are also about 5 inches too long. I am 5'4", measuring 36D-27-36 and I am swimming in the thing. It also comes down a little past the widest part of my hips. I thought that this jacket would provide some cozy warmth & have a semi-fitted look. Love the way it looks on the web-site but sad to report that I will not be able to tolerate the fabric on my skin. The most disappointing thing about this is that there isn't any sort of lining. This would most certainly wear the skin off your elbow's if you went for a walk in it.

Sorry your expectations of fit and finish were not met. With that said, there is no vinyl here! The Castlewood Jacket is made with a woven softshell fabric called 'Thornguard' which we use across our line in a few products. Here are the specs:

83D, 91% Nylon, 9% elastane. 140 x 164 thread count. A durable and tough, go anywhere stretch fabric for any adventure. 6.8 oz/sq.yd.

Again, sorry your expectations were not met. Hope you find a better fit, for you, from a different jacket.
