Minimal Jacket/ Will Keep you Dry

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

Alright... My first impressions of this were not great. It felt and looked a plastic bag. It was also a little bigger than I anticipated. I am 6ft 220 and I could have probably gone with a Medium. I almost returned it but I got it for cheap and thought I would give it a try for a light pack emergency wet weather. I ended up pulling out the other day when it was humid, rainy and close to 75. It was a little warm in the humidity but it kept me dry in the deluge and I felt it breathed well. By that evening it had dropped into the 20s and we had three inches of snow. It seemed to work well in that as well keeping me dry, although it really didn't give me any kind of warmth. If you are looking for a general no frills jacket for summer showers on your hike that packs light, this should work for you. If you layer it with a thermal or sweater underneath it might work for colder climates but I don't think it would hold up long for heavy use.

Essential ultralight gear for minimalist

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Oh, that thing is feather-light!!! It's amazing how that weight can even be achieved... The workmanship is fantastic - the quality of the taping, attention to every detail is obvious. I also have a Marmot Precip jacket, which I like and have used extensively, but I have the feeling that in the long run this one would come on top hands down.

Could this jacket work as an outer shell in snowy conditions? I like the availability of a breathable/waterproof shell that I can pack away during winter hikes and camping... Also, is this a weatherproof membrane or a dwr type deal?

Best Answer Responded on

It's a fully waterproof jacket, but it's a little thin for an outer shell. I'd be concerned about durability.

It's a membrane deal, packs very small and mine (size Large) weighs just 9 oz. I will certainly use it as you suggest; I would be more careful and take something tougher if you are heading into/through brush or trees. If you are more or less in the open, I think it would work great. Very well made, way worth the dough. As a side note, it's reasonably quiet. I'm 6'1.5" and about 190, 35" arms. Fit is perfect with a medium MH down sweater underneath.

Does the Mountain Hardwear Capacitor Jacket have a two-way zipper?

doesnt look like it based on the weight

It does not. Zippers work very nicely, but the main zipper is not two way.

Mountain Hardware Capacitor Jacket

The Mens Mountain Hardware Capacitor Jacket is a very light weight (10 ounces) fully waterproof breathable shell. This jacket had a vast majority of it's testing come from hot humid jungle climates. Climates like this keep you wet all the time, either by rain or your own body sweat. Most waterproof shell's are designed for the user to comfortably wear in warm to cold wet weather because even though some say they have cutting edge breathable technology interwoven into their products few can perform with satisfaction at very hot climates. This jacket essentially can do them all. It really excels in warmer weather when your sweating so much to begin with you would normally forgo wearing a jacket in the rain just to cool off. This level of comfort and protection is provided by Mountain Hardware's new EVAP Fabric. It ensures that outside water will bead up and drop off like any other jacket, and it also evaporates any sweat or condensation from the inside of the jacket by increasing the surface area of the liquid when it comes in contact with the interior surface. By doing this it greatly decreases the footprint of sweat or water increasing the rate at which it evaporates. This is my go to waterproof jacket for warm to hot weather. It will keep you protected from the elements and most importantly yourself. The price is high due to the quality of the product you are getting. In my experience you only need to buy the right thing once. So if the parameters of this jacket meet your individual requirements I would spend the money.

Does this jacket have pit zips?

Best Answer Responded on

Hello and thanks for the question.
This model does not feature pit zips. Here is what Mountain Hardwear has to say...

"Dry.Q EVAP's innovative system of channels disperses sweat quickly for faster evaporation, improved breathability and a drier interior feel without pit zips."
