Mountain Hardwear made the Women's Canyon Shirt from Superlight Desert Cloth, which has a strong weave, a wicking finish, and UPF 30 sun protection. The flip-up collar also protects your neck from the mid-hike sunburn. The protection a long sleeve shirt offers is pointless if you overheat in it, so the Canyon has a Micromesh back yoke and side body panels for ventilation. The sleeve roll-up tabs also help keep you cool. Mountain Hardwear gave this button-up shirt a zip chest pocket and a mesh-back Napoleon pocket.
Bottom Line: Long sleeve shirts offer the best protection from sun and insects—get this protection and plenty of ventilation with Mountain Hardwear's Canyon shirt.
Well, where do I start.....I bought my first one back in 2005 at LLBean....loved it and immediately bought another one the next year. I have worn these 2 shirts almost non stop in the north and in the south in the winter time and they still look great. I wanted to purchase a few more, and was disappointed to see that the style has changed. I did find one on sale in lavender and ordered it today..The jury is still out, until I receive it and give it a try, but from what I have seen of the new shirt, I don't know....It is hard to replace something you loved for a long time...it's like a good man....lol Wish me luck....
Weird. The long vertical side panels that cover the mesh vents buckle and fold out, so you end up with visible side skin. Didn't work for me, but if you like boxy and roll up the sleeves, it may be perfect for you. Clever fabric; I just didn't like the cut.

A great shirt for both hot and cool weather. It keeps the sun off, and in the evening it's just enough to wear over a tsnk top to keep the chill off. Recommended!
Wore this shirt during a two week expedition to the western Amazon in Peru. With 95% humidity and 88 degree temps, this shirt protected me well from the sun and biting insects. I'm 5'6", 130 lbs and the size 8 fit me (I normally wear size 4-6)...not too snug, not loose. Chest pocket was perfect for my small field notebook. Light weight, stylish fit, and highly functional.
Be careful with sizing, definitely best to try on in person to check size. Shirt is what you would expect, light, dries quickly, neat sun collar. Popular enough to catch on a good sale. Chose the Mountain Hardwear after trying the Exofficio version which was too constricting around the chest and too big on the waist, Canyon shirt fits fine.
First of all, "Casper" means "white". Second, although I liked the texture/material of the shirt, I thought the cut was too boxy and short. I am 5'6" and the sleeves and torso of the shirt were too short in a size 8. I was hoping for a comfy and roomy shirt to hike and garden in. Also, even though I understand the functionality of the mesh under the armpits, I don't like the aesthetics of it.
I LOVE these shirts. They're perfect for keeping cool while in the sun. No more sunscreen. I've used mine for years and never had problems with the fabric as some suggest. In fact, the fabric cleans easily and looks fresh after years of wear. The vents are very effective.
I love this shirt for long distance endurance horsebackriding. The only thing I don't like is the sizing: it runs SMALL. I normally wear a size 2 or 4 and needed a size 8 in this shirt. Very comfortable and great in hot weather.
The only thing I don't like about this shirt for hiking is that the fabric pills when rubbed, like carrying a camelback water pack. It's the polyester that pills, 100% nylon doesn't pill. I recommend trying the shirt locally before ordering. According to the sizing chart I should wear a size 10 but the size 6 fits perfectly. Very flattering in styles and colors. I will use them for everything but hiking and get 100% nylon for hiking.
Best sun protection, great ventilation, sensible pocket design and placement, clever collar. I don't tend to wear synthetic products on my upper body (I am a merino wool - icebreaker - nerd), but this shirt is the exception, great design all over.
What a great shirt! I bought this for a 2-week trip to India, and it delivered. Should have purchased the other color, as well. In the heat of Kerala, t-shirts were uncomfortably hot, but this shirt floated over the skin and was so cool. Many of my companions told me how nice the shirt looked, with the feminine tailoring. The only thing I would change is the sleeve length. I am 5'6'', with rather long arms, and the size 6 fit everywhere but the wrists. As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was a great shirt, so I just rolled up the sleeves a bit. Washed out easily and was always dry in a few hours!
The shirt is a great fit and feel, but the roll up sleeve button is about 2.5 inches from the shoulder?? I am only 5'4" and this is still way to short and constricting. Unfortunately I will have to return unless someone else can comment on what I might be doing wrong.
I have just ordered my 4th one. They come everywhere with me; camping, hiking, horsebackriding, yes even shopping. The hidden pockets on the bust are sooo flattering. Well worth the investment.
I now possess three of these shirts and wear them everywhere as well as hiking. The material and the design are superb! Very functional, comfortable and cozy. Thank you for your quick delivery.
I took one of these shirts to Costa Rica, and it was my favorite item. It is stylish, with a side seam detail that is very flattering. There is a zippered pocket over the right breast, but the pocket I used the most was the long Velcroed pocket beside the left placket. There is plenty of venting, under the arm, down the side and across the shoulders, to keep you cool on the hottest of days. It also makes a nice jacket over a t-shirt for evening. It can be rinsed through and will dry overnight.
I took the shirt on safari in Tanzania. It protected me from sunburn close to the equator but it wasn't stiflingly hot because of the great mesh strips, especially under the arms. Also, it's cut generously at the hips, and it fit me better than an Ex Officio shirt that I also bought just for this trip.
I love the Mountain Hardware Long-Sleeve Canyon Shirts. They are absolutely the best shirtsgreat colors, style and comfortable! It's too bad I can't wear them to work!
Wore my Canyon long sleeve shirt while sailing in the British Virgin Islands and was the envy of all the crew. It kept the sun away, kept me cool and dried quickly after being sprayed with the surf. What a great purchase - I may even try it for hiking!
When I bought my first Canyon Shirt several months ago, I couldn't imagine what I would use the Napoleon pocket for. It seemed useless to me, until I went on a hike where I had printed a map online. It's a perfect map pocket! (Provided it's printed on 8 1/2 x 11, folded in quarters. It wouldn't easily hold a standard accordion-fold map.) It beats having to take your backpack off to check the map, and it's even handier than your pants pocket. I love this shirt. The only drawback is that the fabric pills on the back if you wear a backpack. I was surprised by that because I figured friction would have been taken into account when they chose a fabric. But I have the shirt in several colors, and I would gladly buy another if a cool color becomes available.
Thanks for sending me my 2nd and 3rd Canyon Shirts, which I just took on a week's trip to Ireland. I've had my first Canyon shirt for 3 years, and they are fantastic travelers. I never travel with more than a carry on, so this shirt is essential-wash it out in the sink and wear it in the morning.
Well, where do I start.....I bought my first one back in 2005 at LLBean....loved it and immediately bought another one the next year. I have worn these more...
Weird. The long vertical side panels that cover the mesh vents buckle and fold out, so you end up with visible side skin. Didn't work for me, but if more...
