The Mountain Hardwear Women’s Butter Topper Hooded Shirt is silkier than a kiddie pool full of warm honey-butter. Mountain Hardwear's Better Butter Jersey fabric wicks, stretches, and insulates whenever you find yourself in the mountains on a chilly day. A super-soft hood and thumb loops boost your protection from the cool air, and a small zip pocket gives you a spot to stow your car key on a sunset trail run.
Bottom Line: If butter is contentment itself, the Butter Topper Hooded Shirt is having George Clooney walk across the restaurant to ask for your number.
I have this shirt in black (only color in my size) and I must admit I think I look like a dementor when the hood is up. That being said, when I was out running along Lake Michigan here in Chicago and my friend was complaining about the hood of her shirt not staying up in the strong winds I was pretty pleased with my dementor shirt. Kept me nice and warm, didn39;t chafe and the hood stayed put.
As a 6ft tall woman I love the torso and sleeve length of Mountain Hardwear shirts. I can use the thumb loops on this shirt comfortably. The neck and hood are nice an cozy. Living in Southeast Alaska, a temperate rainforest, I often hike in the rain so the snug neck and hood are great for a little extra warmth under my rain jacket. The Better Butter Jersey fabric holds up well. I worked on a trail crew and lived in a tent for 5 months with my only 2 work shirts being Mountain Hardwear Better Butter Jersey shirts. This material is great for wearing days and days in a row and not smelling. The only hole I got in one of the shirts was when an ember from a fire landed on it. One time I left a damp shirt in a sealed bag for a week and it grew mold on it, but one wash and all the mold was gone, no smell left over.

I am kind of obsessed with this shirt. The material feels wonderful - mtn. hardware's "butter" claims are actually true. Plus the shirt looks pretty stylish. The hood is an actual functional hood that is tight-fitting and covers almost everything but your face, in the case that you are wearing it under a bike helmet. Plus the thumb holes are always a plus. I am 5'6" and 115 lbs and the XS fits well, maybe a little tight.
I bought red and am currently trying to justify making the totally unnecessary purchase of the identical shirt in blue...and maybe black too. I am also pretty seriously considering commissioning the company to make me some kind of custom full-body butter suit.
It is made of a relatively thin material but the shirt is just meant to be a layering piece, and it has a lifetime warranty in case you are worried about it not holding up to wear.
Lovely colour - oasis, nice soft buttery material. Large was a good size for me at 5 ft 10". The high neck line keeps the neck warm, but may not be everyones' cup of tea.
My wife always complains that outdoor, athletic tops are too short in through the torso. I was wondering how the Mountain Hardwear Butter Topper Hooded Shirt fits through the torso. Thanks.
This hoody is long. Also check out MH's website - they have center back length info on all of their tops. This particular shirt has back length of 26.5 inches.
I am a huge fan of Mountain Hardwear's butter line. The clothes are exceedingly comfortable and durable. The fit with the hood may be a bit snug for some but all around it is a very flattering cut. The pocket is also big enough to hold ID and a smartphone and yet lays almost completely flat when nothing is inside. My only wish is that they would start making short sleeve shirts and undergarments with this fabric so that I truly could wear it all the time!
OK, well I'm kind of an old bat, but I hike every morning with my dog, and we take a ski vacation every year in December. I bought a butter topper for 2 reasons... the hood, and the thumb holes. WELL, I ended up buying 2 more before we went skiing,... they surpassed what I expected.... I wore a hat over the hood, and never got that freezing headache you sometimes get when the wind is blowing on the lifts. The thumb holes are always a must for me now when I am shopping for active wear of even casual wear. The super soft feel on the inside is yummy. Plus, they made them longer this year, and it covers your bum. The zip pocket is an added bonus, that I am sure I will use when I am wearing it in the spring with no coat over it. I am 5'8 147lbs and bought mediums. I think I covered it all. So, I would not hesitate to buy this shirt, you will get lots of wear out of it.
I really like this shirt for staying warm on the rock in the morning hours. It allows for easy movement but is surprisingly warm for as thin as it is. The material is supple and nice on the skin and it doesn't bunch or impede your movement.
I think the sizing is a bit weird. I can tell it's cut for someone with a bigger rack than mine. It fits perfectly through the shoulders and hips, but there's a little extra material through the chest (I think that's true from all Mountain Hardware tops). I usually wear a medium, but when I tried this on at my local MH store, I also tried the small to see if it fit better through the chest. I would suggest buying a smaller size if you want to wear it as a base layer, but going with your normal size to use it over other clothes. I don't find it to show every little thing as one reviewer suggested, but if I had bought the smaller size, I could see how that would have been true.
Overall, I love it and am happy to have found something that provides warmth with very little bulk.
This was a pretty cool hoody - nice color (I got the red) and fabric was soft. But, it was a bit tight for me, the fabric was a bit thin, and the pocket not so flattering. It was a tough decision, but sent back in the end.
At first I thought the Butter Top was just a fantastic looking casual shirt. Then I wore it as an outer layer snowboarding with the hood up under my helmet. It was even better for that than casual use!
I'm not sure about this one. So many raves about this top, so I ordered 3 colors and I have to say the fit isn't flattering. The cut is long (and I have a long torso) which is good, but this is really long so that it bunches up around the top of your hips. Arm length too....would fit a gorilla. I don't know if sizing down would help because it seems cut smaller in the shoulders and wide in the waist, which is the opposite of what I need. This fabric seems to highlight every lump or bump, so you can't really wear anything underneath without it being magnified. I don't carry any extra weight in my torso, and don't have this problem with other very tight shirts, so it's perplexing. Seriously, I think it even shows goosebumps! I can't attest to the performance because I can't decide whether or not to send this back. The fabric IS butter soft though.
As a 6ft tall woman I love the torso and sleeve length of Mountain Hardwear shirts. I can use the thumb loops on this shirt comfortably. The neck and hood more...
