Mother Nature dumps buckets on the best of Gore-Tex Pro parades. Cinch down the Mountain Hardwear Women’s Bernina Jacket, roll up the attached Ergo hood and pop a bone dry thumbs-up toward the sky. Mountain Hardwear built the Bernina with Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric for total waterproof breathable protection in alpine environments. Water-resistant underarm zips release sweaty vapors and the velvet soft micro-Chamois lined chin guard fends off chafing. A single-pull hood system and dual-adjustable hem drawcords bring a customized fit to your, fast-and-light backcountry bomb shelter.

Bottom Line: Bring the dry.

Is this a long-torso jacket? does it intended to go past your waist? in the picture it seems long enough to cover your bottom too...

In the picture, it looks like its a long torso jacket, but that's cuz it's zipped up all the way to the top (makes it look longer). It's actually just a standard fit jacket that cuts off at the waist.

Durable Build, but Too Small

By:
January 25, 2011

I bought this jacket because I needed a durable mountaineering jacket for a Kilimanjaro hike. I'm usually a size XS in almost every other brand (North Face, Marmot, Patagonia), but found this to be way too small. This was pretty shocking. It fit, but was really tight when I zipped it up and and sleeves were a tad short. I think if I had gotten a Small, it would be a great jacket. Very durable, sturdy, and would get the job done. My other friend who also bought a Mountain Hardwear jacket said he thought the jacket ran small as well (for men's). Maybe it's the sizing of the brand.

How warm is this jacket?

How warm is this jacket?

This question is more difficult to answer than you may think Jessica. Jackets don't come with temperature ratings, so we have to measure warmth somehow else.

This jacket isn't "warm" in the sense that it has insulation. It's only a shell. However the shell is windproof, so it keeps you slightly warmer in that regard. The relative warmth of a jacket also depends on you, the wearer. Generally I'm a cold person, so these shell-type jackets typically do not offer enough heat retention to keep me warm.

If we use a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a cotton t-shirt and 10 is a down parka, I would rate this 2.5 plus/minus 0.5. It will also depend on what you're using it for. This jacket will keep you much warmer if you're generating heat, say by going ice climbing, than if you're standing around, say waiting for the bus.
