Not for short people

I am 5'2" and bought these shorts hoping I could wear them to work, as well as play. (I teach Phys. Ed.) They are super comfortable but I got picked on by my colleagues for wearing "less than girly" shorts. I still have them and do love the fit. They are very stretchy so they are great for hiking and climbing. Just a little too long for me. If you don't care what people think and love comfort (or are over 5'2') you will love these shorts.

These did a rim-to-river-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon and a 3-day backpacking trip in Canyonlands. Phenomenally soft fabric, well-placed seams and lots of room to move! The drawcord at the waist helps the shorts lay nice and flat under a pack. If they came in solid colors, these would be the only shorts I'd ever buy. But I do love the plaid!! And thank you, Mountain Hardwear, for making size 16 shorts that really ARE a size 16...maybe even a little big. Hooray!

Oh hi there, new favorite shorts!

I'm a big fan of plaid. And I'm a bigger fan of shorts that don't make my massive thighs look like sausage tubes. Or short-shorts that make them look plain fat and get uncomfortably short when I sit. So these were a logical choice to try. I agonized over the size, as Mountain Hardwear's chart puts my 39" hips in an 8. But I'd seen a few reviews that recommended sizing down, so I took a shot as I really wanted the Abbey Stone color. I'm glad I listened, as the 6 fits perfectly! Not tight in the waist, plenty of room for my thighs, comes right to the knees (I'm 5'-1"), and to help with any potential gapping in the back, there's even an elastic draw cord. The material is soft, but definitely rugged, and not so heavy that I wouldn't want to wear them on a hot day. It says there are two back pockets, but there's a rear zip on the right side, and then another zip lower on the right leg. Looking forward to many hikes, climbs, and generally looking awesome in these.
