    Long Lasting and Comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have had an older version of this jacket now for almost 10 years and have used it in many different climates for hiking, running and everyday use as a light spring jacket. When the lining of the hood started to finally breakdown, I decided it was time to find a new one and opted for another Mountain Hardware coat given the great quality these jackets seem to hold. Although this particular jacket isn't identical to my old one, it does seem to have a lot of the same great features including being light weight, packs easily, good at repelling water/keeping me dry, a big hood and ample pocket storage (a bonus of two zipper pockets on the chest now on this model). The color was what was expected from the website and the coat seems to fit true to size throughout the body, but the arms are a tad long (this may come in handy though to be able to tuck your hands into when you don't have gloves). Overall, I am happy with the jacket and hope that this one lasts me as long as the other one did.

    Solid

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Used everyday in the rain forest in Southeast Alaska. It was my go to while guiding canoe trips in the rain. Just like most any rain jacket it did become saturated after a certain amount of wear, but it beaded water and kept me dry for at least 5+ consecutive hours in the pouring rain (much longer than my marmot precip).

    Jacket is not waterproof

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

I've used this jacket a few times in the rain. The material becomes immediately soaked and then I am wearing a soggy clinging jacket that makes me freeze. The rain does not bead at all on this jacket. The left chest zipper goes to the inside of the jacket but there is no pocket. I can't determine a use for it. This is a nice windbreaker, but is worth nothing as a rainjacket.

You got a defective jacket. My chest pocket opens into a pocket, and the DWR beads water as well as, or better than, any shell I've ever owned (many). Based on your review and a couple others, it's clear MH has had some quality control issues with jackets recently. Fortunately, their warranty and the exchange/return policies of BC should cover you. Send the parka back pdq.

    Great Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked this up to replace my old (7+ yo) Marmot that isn't keeping my dry anymore. I happened to buy it a day before a week of very wet weather, so I had several good days to try it out in the elements. This jacket feels and looks great, and has kept me very dry.

I ordered the Dark Compass color and love the color. Unlike the bad review here, I haven't found a flaw in the stictching or had any trouble with the zippers. Based on the bad review I was concerned, so I took a trip to the warehouse here in SLC to look at it first before buying, as well as compare it to the Marmot PreCip. The PreCip was a close runner up. Ultimately, I wanted pockets, and I liked the slightly more substanatial feel of the material over the PreCip.

    This jacket is awesome!

    Perfect, exactly as described!

It is exactly as described...already one of my favorite jackets! Looks good, feels good, and most importantly, has kept me dry. I've already done a few quick rainy trips to Zion and Capitol Reef National Parks in it...and it has worked like a charm.

I ordered the Dark Compass color and it is beautifully, identical to the stock photos. I was a bit worried with the guys review below,...but mine looks nothing like his....even the material appears different.

    Great

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I have the regular Plasmic jacket and really like it, but wanted pit zips, higher pockets and a chest pocket. The Alpen Plasmic Ion fits the bill perfectly. Unlike the negative reviewer, I can't find a single flaw in the jacket's stitching and the inner pocket zip works fine. The zippers are indeed plastic, as they are on most of my rainwear (including my Seraction pants, which are awesome), and I have yet to have one fail. Regarding color: I use an X-Rite calibrated monitor and the colors on the BC website are indeed off. I got the red and it is deeper and richer than shown in the above pics (fine by me). Sounds like this is the case with the dark compass, and probably the other colors too, so take that into account when ordering.

    Horrendous, deplorable built quality!!!

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I'm writing a full review having only unpacked but never used this jacket.

Where should I start from?... what a shame... I had never rated any product on Backcountry with one start, but this one deserves none!

First disappointment: the color shown on MH website and subsequently on BC website is not as per the actual item. I'm posting several images which show the actual color. I was expecting a light, close to turquoise blue but I received a darker blue very close to the Mountain Hardwear "Azul". (as seen on this product link: http://www.backcountry.com/mountain-hardwear-finder-jacket-mens?rr=t)

Second disappointment: The stitching looks awefull everywhere I look on this jacket.... stitches coming out on the chin guard, bad stitching on the pockets and around the zipper.

Third disappointment: The zippers. Made of plastic, fragile and look like they would break/deteriorate really quick. Underarm zips jam, main zip is not sewn strait onto the face fabric of the jacket, internal pocket zipper does not work as it opens and closes on a perforated stretch mesh. (See video)

I'm a die-hard fan of mountain hardwear products, and thus my huge disappointment by seeing their quality degrade.
