I compared the amount of sweat I produced while hiking during the rain on a 40 degree day with the jacket on to what I produced the next day on the same hill without the jacket or any rain. The sweat was equal on both days and was confined to my head. I could have opened the hood up for more ventilation but I kept it cinched down because I liked the protection.
The Dry-Q Elite fabric claims water-proofness and breath-ability which doesn't€™t require the jacket to get soggy inside before it begins to €œbreathe€ like most other fabrics do. This is a big deal. Most WPB coats make you get clammy inside before they breathe, not the case here. After wearing this in a downpour and hiking for a half hour and gaining around 700 feet I can attest to this personally.
Remember the first time you wore that new soft shell jacket in a €œreal€ rainstorm and found out that it worked great until something rubbed against the jacket and it began absorbing water? This jacket has cured that problem. The DWR finish is fantastic on this jacket and, try as I might, I could not get water to soak in, even when the fabric got muddy.

So really I must say that the Alchemy breathes like soft shells are famous for without leaking like they are famous for.

    Backcountry Ski Jacket - Alchemy

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I purchased this jacket to replace my older Kepler that I had for 4 years for BC skiing. I love the DryQ elite fabric, it breaths well, and is completely waterproof (on the inside). The feel of this fabric is great, softshell like, but also durable, and very quiet on movements. Once you use the material more (a couple years), rain doesn't shed as well (even when you treat it) but you still don't get wet on the inside. A dedicated hardshell would work better for this. A few things that I don't like about this jacket, is the pit zip / pocket combo. I regularly use pockets, and sometimes use zips, and its a bit scary to do both for fear of items falling out. Also, the bottom of the jacket is a bit tighter then the kepler, less of a ski fit. And, also, the thumb pockets are now removed, but I didn't use them that much. But since MH didn't make a dedicated BC ski jacket this year, this was my option. I do enjoy the updated collar, and it protects against wind better than the Kepler did. Also, the cuff velcro seems a bit more bomber. Overall length, and size fit well (medium, at 5'7", 150lbs), except the bottom is a bit small for skiing movements. The fabric is the same for the Kepler, and I used that jacket for all touring, from temps around 25 degrees and below, I wear the jacket the whole day. When it creeps up to 30, I find I take the jacket off.

    Excellent soft shell

I got this jacket to see if it would work for me as a ski shell and with the color of bibs I had purchased. The jacket was technically exactly what I was looking for and even fit great. The color was spot-on even for what my bibs were.

An unexpected bill came up though and I couldn't justify spending the money when I needed it, so I returned them :(

I will definitely be getting this jacket for this winter tho!

    Everyday

I'm working towards paddling 300+ days this year, and this jacket has been my go-to. Even after spending repeated days being drenched by salty spray and pelted by wind driven rain, the material is still keeping my dry as a bone. The only wetness i'm getting is from face shots dripping down my chin- zippers are super water proof as well. I've got plenty of room in the shoulders for unrestricted movement. And after almost 3 months of solid use, the only spot showing wear is just under the hood between the shoulders- it's starting to pill from where my PFD rests in the middle of my upper back.

This jacket continues to be outstanding.

    The Best

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this jacket for aerobic winter activities. I needed a jacket that was wind/weather proof and breathable to keep me dry. I have worn it multiple times now running in freezing temps and biking in freezing temps with only a single layer underneath. My base layer NEVER got wet at all- even with no pit zips!!! Exactly what I needed and a great price. I have not worn it out in rain/heavy snow so I can't vouch for its effectiveness in those conditions but can't wait to give it a try.

    Hood Adjustments

The Hood on this jacket is huge. 4 adjustment points: the two on the front (shown on the right of the picture from both outside and inside) which adjust around your face, one in the back that adjusts up over your ears to the front of the hood, and another in the back that vertically adjusts the hood. Pretty awesome, and super adjustable. But be sure to adjust it all before you're out.. the back ones are next to impossible with gloves, and are even a pain with bare fingers. The front aren't so bad..

Thanks to Backcountry.com and Mountain Hardwear for choosing me to review the Alchemy Jacket for the backcountry.com community.

I’ve had this jacket for about a month and worn it for everything: snowy, windy, and rainy hikes; cold days sea kayaking, a wet and windy day of driveway mechanic-ing, and the dreaded Aleutian Island Recess Duty.

First, my only issue with the Alchemy Jacket: No pit-zips. The pockets, which are placed pretty high to be out of the way of a pack’s hip belt or your climbing harness, are mesh lined(even the chest pocket), so when open, they add a little ventilation, but not the head dumping power of pit zips.

Now that that is out of the way, this jacket is awesome. MH really pulled out all the stops on this one. The softshell material is super tough, but at the same time has the softness you’d expect from a softshell. The material allows very little stretch, but is cut perfectly for backcountry activities. I’m usually on the cusp between a Large and an XL, and the large fits great- plenty of room for a puffy underneath. The arms are long (with angled cuffs), the tail is long, the hood is huge, the collar is high, and the shoulders allow movement.

Looking at the inside of the jacket, all the seams are taped, and everything is lined with thin fleece that slides nicely over your puffy. To help seal in the heat and seal out everything else, the hood is outfitted with some prime adjustments. Despite its hugeness (it’d probably fit a motorcycle helmet) the hood cinches down no problem over a beanie or baseball cap. The cuffs are equipped with long Velcro tabs to strap em tight and the waist of the jacket is also adjustable.

On a more superficial note, the color of this jacket (I got the State Orange) is rad! Pretty true to the pic, and sweet indeed! I’ve been compared to a bouy and have been told, “at least they’ll find your body!”

The Alchemy is a super well thought out, well designed, and well-built jacket ready to take it to the limit!

    Unanswered Question

Hi, I need some sizing help for the MH Alchemy jacket, which I plan to use as a 3-season jacket for hiking and riding my trail bike. I'm 6'0" and 225lbs and, depending on the cut, I wear a size 44 or 46 in a suit coat. My waist is about 40". Back in the day I played college hockey so I have good size shoulders and arms, but at 43 some of the excess weight has settled in the mid-section. Thanks!

Does this have any ventilation options such as pit zips?

There are no pit zips. But they consider the pockets to be vents. They have a mesh lining and are pretty high up (would be above a back pack harness), and they do provide some ventilation. they definitely don't offer the heat-dumping abilities of pit-zips, but they do get rid of some excess heat.
