Airjet 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear's Airjet 2 is best for long-term backcountry travelers who require a Superlight tent and the additional protection and gear storage space of a vestibule. A modified tension shelf inside the tent adds to the tents stability, while giving you one more place to stash items you can't afford to lose. Mountain Hardwear's CrossFlow technology involves complete floor perimeter and ceiling venting, coupled with a fly welded to the floor, which allows air to circulate and prevents condensation. Additional features include a single front door entry with a mesh panel for added ventilation, watertight zippers and the light-but-bomber Atlas pole system.

Bottom Line: Weekend, shmeekend.

Definitely worth it

I have used the 2005 Airjet 2 for over a year. Even though the price seemed steep it was worth it. This tent was reasonably breathable, extremely stable, and nearly set up by itself. If set up properly there is no reason for any comdensation to occur. I have used this tent for July in New Mexico and it was just as dry in March in the Adirondacks. The only nitpicks I have is that the Airjet should probably be considered a one person due to its small size. I also doubt this tent would stay dry if used as a 2-man. For me this is the perfect all-around tent but, if you plan to use it for only a few weekend trips don't pay this price. Conversely if you are a very serious, year-round packer I would suggest an upgrade.

I love the durability in the wind and blocking out the rain. This Airjet Tent is great to divide up among two people for weight too. Good for all conditions.

Simple yet Complex Single Wall Tent

By:
October 21, 2005

A friend and I both purchased brand new Airjet 2 tents this year. His is a 2005 model and mine is a 2004. The only noticeable difference is the '04's have Easton Aluminum Poles (made in USA) and the '05's have Atlas Aluminum Poles. Other subtle differences like silk screening and guy line colors were noticed as well. There are pro's and con's associated with this tent. I'll list some of them here. Pros: Lightweight single wall tent, sets up quickly and easily, storage shelf and two storage pockets, ripstop waterproof material, taped floor seems, optional large storage shelf and footprint, guy lines included, functional vestibule, unique ventilation system. Cons: Lack of windows, hot when in direct sunlight, condensation in right conditions, vestibule is awkward to open and close from inside tent. I have used this tent on a 4 day backpacking trip to California's Desolation Wilderness. I was more than pleased with it. It’s light and sets up fast. The conditions were very windy on day 2 and 3. The guy lines insured the tent was secure and stable. It did not rain this trip however I expected to stay dry if it did. I like the convenience of a single wall tent. Having to set up a separate rain fly, to me, is an excess chore. You will not have the ability to enjoy the stars on mild summer nights with this tent however. The tent comes with 8 aluminum V stakes ('04 Y stakes). It takes 13 stakes to stake out the corners, vents, guy lines and vestibule. Once staked out properly, it isn't going anywhere. I highly recommend this tent.

Prepare to Wake Up Wet

By:

Not from rain, sleet, freezing rain or snow but from condensation. This would be a terrific tent if I lived in Arizona but not here in the Carolinas. I mean if you shook the tent in the morning one could create a small rain storm inside. Besides this it is an excellent tent. Light-weight, compact, waterproof, easy to erect, a backpacker couldn't really ask for much more. Just don't forget to wear your rain suit to bed if you don't live in the desert. Anyone want to buy a slightly used, aired out Airjet 2 ....cheap.

Great tent - why bother with a bivy!

By:
March 27, 2006

I bought this tent before a trip to NZ where I required light weight gear. I had owned Mountain Hardwear tents before and knew the quality would be top notch. First off - this tent is LIGHT. Even with the ground sheet it still weighs in at just over 3lbs. The stuff sack is roomy enough that you are not cursing while packing it. In colder temps, with good wind, things get a bit cool in the tent. But you also won’t get any condensation; the venting works very well. In "New Zealand Rain" (i.e. buckets!) it also held up very well. Even with the top vents open, no water got in. Some condensation was evident in the only hardest of rain. Nothing too uncomfortable. I would recommend this tent to any ultralight hiker who wants the room of a tent, but the weight of a bivy.

good tent in dry and warm conditions. up in glacier in summer it had so much condensation that it dripped in and soaked the whole floor and everything inside it. didn't want to pack it after that. altogether lightweight and easily set up.
