    Do the Dewline.

When you need the warmth of a heavy down jacket and the packability of a lighter insulator but don't want the extra bulk of a hood, pull out the Dewline Men's Down Jacket from Mountain Equipment. It walks a fine line between heavier down jackets and lighter layering pieces, so you can wear it alone or under a shell as conditions warrant, and packs enough water-resistant 700-fill down to keep you comfortable on moderately cold afternoons or murderously frigid mornings. The down is held in place by the Helium 30 fabric, which is lightweight but supremely durable, and by the stitch-through construction, which prevents the feathers from migrating and leaving you with cold spots. The Dewline's Lycra-bound cuffs and adjustable hem seal in heat and lock out drafts, and the whole package stuffs conveniently into the inner pocket for easy transport and storage.

My intended use for this piece is mostly casual running of errands around town here in Wisconsin. I use this in the teens (Fahrenheit) give or take 10 degrees, which I suspect is colder than most might use it, FYI. I don't layer much (over or under) with this. At 13.2 ounces, I find the Dewline packs more warmth than the smaller-baffled jackets I've tried from other brands at similar weight. The FIT is absolutely perfect: it maintains a tailored fit though the torso down to the waist but isn't restrictive in the chest/armpits. I've got a fairly athletic build w/ a 32" waist and I wear medium in pretty much everything. ME's insulated jackets in general fit me like I want them to. Other brands' insulators of similar weight & features tend to either bulge around the midsection or pinch at the armpits; this does neither. If you have found similar complaints with other brands give this a shot. Other details which distinguish this from competitors include a GREAT collar: it tapers UP as it goes toward your chin and there's plenty of down in there. Other brands seem to skimp on this & I suspect it's b/c they intend jackets of this weight to not be used in as cold of temps as I prefer it for. The jacket also features a moulded front zipper & interior zip pocket, which were absolute deal-breakers for me on this jacket. It also has dual-hem drawcords, great stretch cuffs, nice little drop hem in back. This ME Dewline soars where other jackets of similar weight, warmth & features fell short for me (and I've tried a whole bunch from the likes of Arc'Teryx, Black Diamond, RAB & Montane). The best part: this is cheaper than its competitors, too.
