The Motorola T8500R Two-Way Radio provides you with 22 channels of communication backed by two watts of power, so you can transmit and receive a signal from up to 18 miles away. The T8500R allows you to use either the FRS (Family Radio Service) or the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), and also receives NOAA weather channels, so you can head out into the backcountry prepared. Ten audible call tones and talk-confirmation tones let your friends know when you’re calling or done talking, and an LCD backlight lets you see in low light. The T8500R runs on a rechargeable NiMH battery that lasts around 11 hours per charge, and comes with a dual drop-in charger and two swivel belt clips.

Bottom Line: Keep in crystal-clear contact with the T8500R.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

I have had no problems with these radios yet, but I have not really come any where near the 18 mi range. The weather options has come in handy on variable days. As I log more hrs on these I will update my review.

With a range of 18 miles, you'll be set to keep track of the worst kids in the whole school no problem.

These radios will work anywhere if they're close enough. The fact that they use those frequencies doesn't mean they have to be close to towers or anything, it just means those frequencies are reserved for personal radio use so you don't have to worry about interfering with something important. This is only true in the United States. Other countries may have different licensing requirements.Legally you are also supposed to obtain a license for GMRS--FRS you don't need but only has the range of a mile or 2.
