The Montrail Torre GTX backpacking boot has raised the bar for lightweight boots built for extended outdoor adventures. The Waterproof Gore-tex construction keeps feet dry, durable all-leather uppers ensure a long life for the boot, and a nylon lasting board provides the support and stability you'll need for hardcore, multi-day trips with very heavy packs. But what makes the Torre GTX so special is the IntegraFit last that ensures the same custom fit for a huge array of foot widths and volumes.
Bottom Line: The Montrail Torre GTX is built for people who want a lightweight boot that is not only extraordinarily comfortable, but worthy of a serious outdoors excursion.
I am incredibly picky about shoes. I have tried on hundreds of boots, and rarely buy due to various reasons. The Torre GTX is one I did buy. It met certain requirements, a tight yet flexible fit, an immensely stable heel and strong toe box. It is a good fit across the top of the foot also. It did require 4-5 weeks of daily use to break in...a little longer than I wanted, but it is worth it. There was no blistering, just a tight fit down around the joints on the last couple of toes. I did have to double loop the knot to keep them from coming untied, but it is inconsequential to me. Have not taken them into heavy dew areas so I can't speak about how they fair in water; I don't have reservations about their performance there since all other areas have been pleasing.
I have to say these are the most comfortable boots I have very worn. I had previously worn a pair of Merrell Explorers that were 5 years old yet still gave me blisters and uncomfortable feet at the end of the day. My boots arrived on a Friday and it just happened to be I was leaving to go on a weekend trip that weekend. I figured I would wear these at least for the first mile to get them broken in then switch to my old boots which I had brought with me. To my surprise I wore these brand new, unbroken in boots the entire 3 day trip without any blisters. I did develop a couple of hot spots but nothing else. With my old boots I would have gotten blisters and had very uncomfortable feet. These boots were so comfortable I didn't even wear my sandals around camp. I would highly recommend these boots to anyone looking for a lightweight, waterproof, comfortable boot.

These hiking boots are the third set for a 14 y/o boy scout whose feet have grown three times in one year. We realized he needed a size bigger two weeks prior to his scout hiking trip. Backcountry's competitive pricing and service were great. The boots wear like iron and they break in very easily. No report of blisters and he said they were as comfortable as his sneakers.
Normally I like to break new boots in on short hikes with my dog around our local nature trails. After trying the Montrail Torre GTX boots on I thought I might give them a try on our last big hike of the year and I was not dissapointed. With a 30 pound pack and 7 mile days in the Eagle Cap wilderness of eastern Oregon I had no hot spots, blisters, or anything but backpacking bliss. Granted Boots are a pretty subjective item to review, but consruction quality, traction, support and comfort are all first rate in these medium weight hikers. I am also very happy with backcountry.com's customer service and prompt shipping.
I took these boots up South Sister (OR) and Mt Adams (WA) and they performed wonderfully. I have narrow feet that are hard to fit. In almost 10,000 ft of descent I never hit my toes once. This is a great boot. Unless you need crampons a tougher boot is unecessary and less comfortable.
These boots are light, comfortable and require minimal break in time. There's not much cushion, but I solved that with aftermarket insoles. Good ankle support carrying 35-40 pounds. Yes, the more scuffed up and dusty they get the better they look.
These are great boots. They were broken in very quickly and are completely waterproof and very sturdy. The leather has been slightly ripped in a couple places however
These boots are great! I needed no time to break them in. My first hike was 10 miles in one day with these boots and my feet felt great. The terrain was from Mt. Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi) down. It was rocky and it was very wet. These are a great mid-weight boot. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a pair of boots for day and weekend trips!
Although I don't have "hard to fit" feet when it comes to boots, the Torre GTX really stood out. They fit like gloves, no wet feet whatsoever after hours hiking in wet bush. Rubber toe guards are a plus as I use my Torres for scrambling through scree and talus.
I liked them so much that when I found them on sale here, I bought a second pair. Definitely recommended!
From my son John: Being at a wilderness school in VA, I use these boots almost daily, a little less now that winter is on its way. Now that they are broken in, they are fairly comfortable. They have performed well and so far they have kept their Gore Tex performance. I have encountered two problems with the boots. The leather cracks or breaks where the boot bends at the toe. Also, possibly from continued use, the rubber "w" on the toe and some of the rubber sides are breaking away. I do enjoy these boots. They have good grip for hard work and daily walking in the woods.
Yes, as other reviewers stated, these are excellent boots and completely waterproof. One problem... no grip on the soles. If you step on wood or a large rock face that has algae on it or is very wet you will fall flat on your back.
The Montrail Torre GTX Boots are the first substantial backpacking/hiking boots I have purchased. Previously I have used a couple of different Hi-Tech models. I am more than satisfied with the performance of the Montrail Torre GTX boot. After a brief break-in period, I wore these boots on a four-day backpacking trip into California's Desolation Wilderness. My packed weight was 42lb. These boots kept my feet comfortable and dry. It's the first time I didn't feel the need to take off my boots as soon as I arrived at my destination. I tested the Gore-Tex by standing in water up to the fifth eyelet. These boots did not let in a drop of water. Hiking through the Desolation Wilderness subjects your boots and your feet to uneven terrain and jagged rocks. The Vibram soles insured my feet stayed comfortable and did well sticking to smooth rock surfaces. Another nice feature is the rubber protection around the toe box. If I had to find fault in these boots I would say the Nubuck is a little fragile, as I did gouge it on a rock. After cleaning and re-waterproofing with Nikwax, I believe they are going to be fine. If these boots are a good fit for you I highly recommend them.
The Montrail Torre GTX has got to be the best pair of boots I have ever had. I've gone through 4 pairs of 100+ dollar military style boots in 22 months here in Baghdad and none of them (of course) have offered the comfort and durability of the Montrail Torre GTX. This site also did a great job of sending me another pair quickly when the pair I ordered initially was a half size too small. They got here just in time for three inches of rain, which means just in time for six inches of mud.
This is my second pair of Montrail Torre Boots. The first pair were just Torres but not GTX. They fit well and were comfortable right out of the box. Some break in was needed but not much. After many miles the soles had lost their tread, so I bought the Torre GTXs. Same story comfortable out of the box. The leather uppers are more weatherproof then the nylon uppers on the Torres. These will take a little more break in but I have take some 3-5 mile hikes with no problems. These boots are best for narrow to mid width feet with normal to high arches. If you have wide flat feet then these probably will not be comfortable. I highly recommend these boots
I purchased these boots for general winter use in northern Michigan, where temps are 10-25 F and we get lots of snow from Lake Superior. They replaced an older pair of Vasque boots which I was sad to get rid of and afraid new boots wouldn't compare. I use them mostly for winter hiking, snowshoeing, and snow shoveling. These boots were comfortable right out of the box. As soon as I slipped them on, I could tell by the feel that they will last for years and would live up to my old boots. I'm impressed by the stability and control I feel wearing these boots. They are high and wrap my ankle, providing a very secure feel. The construction of the boots seems durable, especially the soles. This is the first pair of Vibram soles I have owned on a boot and I am very satisfied with how solid they feel. The Gore-Tex in the boots have kept my feet dry and warm, but it's important to have the right socks. For me, Gore-Tex in boots is not as breathable as I would like, and cotton socks tend to worsen the problem. I found the fit to be normal. I wear a men's size 9 normally and wear the same with these boots. I prefer to backpack and hike during the non-winter season in shoes, and I only plan to use this boot in cold and snowy conditions. I think they would be too warm otherwise. I recommend these boots to anyone looking for a solid, cold-weather boot that will last for years to come.
Got these Torre GTX boots for an unbeatable price! Local backpacking stores still carrying them for $50 more! Boots are amazing! Took about 5 days of working in them to get a good break. No blisters. Got one hot spot on day two, but that's to be expected. For the price, did EXCEPTIONALLY well on the trail. Feet were very comfortable. I have a pair of Salomons I use to trail blaze, and didn't think I could get the same level of comfort out of a backpacking boot...but these do the job! I've almost considered buying a second pair so I can have them waiting after I wear my first pair out (it's so hard to find a good boot). I have a slender foot. Not sure how someone with a bigger foot would do in them. Worn with Smartwool socks.
One of my all-time favorite hiking boots. I have a narrow foot and while these are still a touch wide at the toes, I love them. Nice heel pocket, super comfortable, and just bomber. Of course hiking boots are all about what fits you best - so put these on the top of your list to check out.
