Montrail built the Women’s Mountain Masochist WB Trail Running Shoe to handle the nastiest conditions you ever find on the trail. A waterproof breathable lining ensures you feet stay nice and dry while the gusted tongue keeps out rocks, dirt, and moisture. Montrail’s ultra-sticky Gryptonite soles help you stay rubber down when you have to traverse slick rock slabs or cross the river by tiptoeing across a fallen tree.

Bottom Line: For harsh conditions.

The only shoe I've ever found that you can stick your feet in and go. This is my third pair. Think about a half size up, in other shoes I wear 8.5 and with this shoe I go 9.0. I heart Montrail.

I run in the men's version and love them. I would say they are of a medium weight given that they have a gore tex membrane in them. They look a lot beefier than they actually feel and once broken in, they are a great pair of winer/wet weather shoes. They are not light as a feather, but do not feel clunky at all. They are very nimble and a great for rooty, technical terrain. I pair mine with the Mountain Hardwear Seta Trail Running Gaitors for the ultimate wet weather system.
Hope this helps.

Favorite Montrails thus far.

I pulled these shoes out of the box and packed them for Costa Rica. I broke them in while in Panama during the dry season and ran through 95 degree weather on beaches and hiking in jungles in Costa. They never felt stiff, gave me blisters or made my feet feel overheated. I paired them with coolmax socks and was good to go. I wear them hiking and running and they are grippy through mud, rocks, sand, water and on pavement. All other Montrails I've worn have been significantly tougher to break in, but these guys are perfect. Sizing is accurate as always. Please never discontinue!

When ordering this shoe, what does the "coolant" choice mean?

Coolant is the color, the only option currently available. Like the color of green coolant for your car.

Only if you need the gortex.....

By:

I just got these shoes in anticipation of the wet NW WA trail season and took them out for a spin. The fit is true to Montrail sizing and comparable to the fit of my Hardrocks. However, they are not the same feel as the Hardrocks. The Masochist is lighter, flexier, and more responsive to trail conditions. I liked the way it gripped and allowed good lateral movement and trail hugging when hauling downhill. However, there is little “spring” in the cushioning, which gives the feeling of a flat, slapping foot stride when running on flats or downhill, and a temporary case of shin splints (even if you never get them like me). I also found that my feet heated up pretty quickly in the Gortex. I am not prone to hot feet, so this might be a problem if you are. I hope that in colder wet conditions this problem will subside. Lastly, where the tongue folds into the shoe it tended to cause a pressure point. A ticker Smartwool sock and a little break in time will help it subside. Overall, a decent shoe, but only if you need the water protection.

LOVE these shoes!

By:

I was looking for a shoe that I could use to continue running through the winter here in Vermont. My main concerns were warmth and traction. These shoes are AWESOME! My feet have never been cold (and they are usually prone to being cold!) during my 0:Dark early runs! They also grip the snowy road pretty well. They run true to size; I normally wear a size 8 street shoe, but I got an 8.5 because I wanted to wear a bit of a thicker sock for the winter and that has worked out very well. I'm very happy with these shoes and would (have) recommend to anyone running in cold snowy conditions. PLUS....LOVE the name! :)

Great cushiony shoes!

These were recommended to me by running friends/family, and they live up to the hype. Fantastic for trail running and walking - lots of arch support, very cushiony ride for pregnancy as I grow! Highly recommend them!!!

light shoe but blister prone

By:
March 13, 2009

this is a super light trail shoe with great arch support but the back rides up too high on your heel...it's a blister situation waiting to happen. I have small feet (6) normal width and high arches and I wore them around the house for an hour and at 55 minutes my heel was already red and swollen. If Montrail fixed the heel the shoe would be ideal.
