The Montrail Java GTX will put as much spring in your step as a triple-espresso if you're used to hauling an 80-pound pack with an overbuilt pair of backpacking boots. If you're out for a day hike, lightweight performance is the name of the game. The Montrail Java GTX fits the bill with its totally waterproof Gore-Tex construction and deeply lugged yet lightweight outsole. Next time you head out for a moderate day hike or overnight backpack, leave the cement shoes behind and bring something a little more sporty. Throw on the Java GTX.

Bottom Line: The Montrail Java GTX is best-suited for moderate day hikes and overnight back packs.

Bad Soles

By:
May 3, 2007

Everything is great but for the traction. I slipped several times while hiking and then wiped out while walking down a wet asphalt path at college. This is ridiculous. I don't think I've ever slipped before in any shoes unless there was ice on the ground. Don't know why the soles are so ineffective but the rubber compound seems to be faulty.

concern at the moment

By:

Ordered new montral shoe after looking for something light. Truth is I haven't hiked in them other then around the house at the moment. I am hard on hiking shoes and think the construction of these shoes will work fine. Also like the bounce they provide. Nice and light too. My primary concern at this point is my feet are sweltering hot in them, even with a liner sock. I am hoping this is not going to be an issue on the trail, we will see.

super supportive

Just picked up a pair of the Java GTX's last week. First test 'drive' was a 9-mile, 2,500-vertical foot grueling hike, and the Java performed flawlessly! I'm definitely stoked--I have a narrow, low-volume foot and it's hard for me to find shoes that fit right. The 'tongue-less' lining is great--didn't get a single pebble inside the shoe the whole hike. The soles are amazingly supportive and provide excellent traction. I did manage to roll my heel once--but that's to be expected with a low-cut shoe--more my fault than anything. This if the first true hiking shoe (as opposed to boot) I've owned--and I'm already sold! Highly recommended!
