Montrail designed the AT Plus GTX specifically for fast-packers who are looking for a lightweight hiker that won't slow them down when they are tackling long distances. The Gore-Tex liner keeps feet dry while letting them breathe as well as regulates temperature.

  • Nylon mesh upper promotes air flow
  • Thermoplastic band for support
  • Dual-density, compression-molded EVA midsole cushions impact
  • Griptonite outsole with multipurpose lug pattern for traction

Bottom Line: Go the distance.

This shoe is awesome. Great traction in wet conditions, super comfortable. Just got back from 4 day backpacking trip to Colorado and these shoes performed incredibly. From soggy alpine meadows to muddy alpine trails, rock hopping across streams, no complaints at all on this shoe. Feet stayed dry and blister free the entire time.

dingogap. This shoe compares very favorably to the Hardrock. Both shoes have an aggressive outsole for running on rugged trails or hiking. Both have a supportive midsole that help to control over pronation in the gait cycle by way of posting. One difference is that the Hardrocks had a medial post where the AT Plus has what is called a "Horseshoe" post that goes all the way around the heel of the shoe from the medial to the lateral side of the foot making it that much more supportive. This extra support brings the AT Plus closer to a hiking shoe than a running shoe but many folks use this as a running shoe that need that extra support. I hope this info helps!

Hazardous to my health

I was excited to find a pair of GTX wonders that seemed to fit my feet well, with excellent heel lock-down, for my recent trip to Kauai. I've hiked over the technical, super slippery rocks and mud on the Napali coast before, and was looking forward to the one-two protection of GTX and short gaiters to keep my feet dry(ish).

While I was a bit surprised to see the smallish & hard treads on the bottom of the Gryptilian soles (much smaller than on previous MT Hard Rock shoes I own) they seemed to work fine around my local gnarly-but-dry trails.

However, as soon as I hit moisture on the trail in HI they turned into self lubricating ball-bearing encrusted death machines.

Having hiked there before, I knew I had to be careful, but expected these to provide, at least, as much traction as my old TNF trail shoes on the slippery stuff.

I'll spare you most of the gory details, other than to say that, after six to eight hard, scary falls (which would have been much worse had I not had my excellent Black Diamond trekking poles to save my ass) I became so paranoid about every step I took that it took me over two and a half extra hours to painfully hike out the four miles back to the car... Really glad I had plenty of flashlight power (and GPS) to help me find the way.

Sorry Montrail, I generally love your shoes, but these things were downright dangerous on the slippery stuff! While I accept the risks of my little adventures, and accept that not all equipment works equally well for all users, I must tell you that I have never actually been traumatized by my equipment before. Back they go (thanks BC).

Unfortunately I had the same experience with this shoes, while the trail is dry it is fine, but first wet rock and the shoes became like well oil lubricated, I was not able to make any jump , each step was like the last one. I little bit surprised by such behavior of hiking shoes.

Mitch. Sorry you had a bad experience with the out-sole grippy-ness of the AT Plus. The rubber compound and the 'razor lug' design is something that has been in use for quite some time. A similar design has been in use since the Hurricane Ridge! If you are interested in checking out a different shoe from Montrail and a different out-sole design with dual density rubber (sticky and regular) check out the Mountain Masochist in Gore. They are not quite as stiff as the AT Plus but I have used the shoes as approach shoes and running shoes on wet and dry surfaces and I haven't been down once despite giving it my best shot! Otherwise, complaint heard and noted. Thanks!

Wow, this is an awesome shoe. Stayed dry and comfortable backpacking in colorado. Soggy alpine meadows, muddy/slick trails through Aspen groves, and rock hopping across streams are no match for this shoe. Could not be happier with this shoe.

I havent worn this shoe. But for me, Montrails usually run about a half size too big for me. I have 5 pairs of them and that gotten a half size smaller than what I wear casually. I will note however that I do like a tigher fitting shoe.
cheers

My feet have found Nirvana...This is a great trail shoe. My initial hike was a 2 day backpack of the Devils Path.(Catskills).I have problem feet(PF)and after 2 days..24 miles and 8500vert on the rockiest trail you'll ever find, my feet and knees were pain free. Never had a problem w/ grip on ascents or fast rock-hopping descents.very supportive and excellant pro underfoot...I ordered a 1/2 size up and wore Montrail Enduro Blue insoles(a standard)

Fredric. This shoe is designed to be a lightweight low top hiking shoe with lots of support and running shoe components. The AT Plus utilizes a "Horseshoe Post" that provides lots of stiffness and support throughout the shoe on both the medial and the lateral side. It is very comfortable due to the shape of the last but I would not say that it is 'flexible.' If you are looking for a more flexible low top trail runner check out the low profile Mountain Masochist also from Montrail. I hope this info helps!
