Cram the tiny Montbell Men's Ultralight Wind Jacket and forget it's even there until Mother Nature makes an attack. At just 2.6 ounces, the ultralight is worth its weight in platinum when the wind kicks up during a ride or a hike. The zippered sleeve pocket keesp your keys handy and safe, and the ultralight even comes with a stuff sack for easy storage.

Bottom Line: Take the edge off with the nearly weightless Ultralight.

Pricey, but very useful

When they say this jacket is ultralight, they are not kidding. I can ball it up into my fist and make it disappear. It comes with a tiny stuff sack which is very handy. When I am wearing the jacket, I store the stuff sack inside the little arm pocket of the jacket.

The jacket feels like it is made of tissue. But after wearing it for a bit, you soon realize that it is durable stuff. The jacket is well made. Be warned: this sizes run small. I was supposed to fit into the Medium, but went with the Large... and it was even a tight fit (but good).

I used it on a bike trip and it was excellent as a windbreak. I now take it on every trip into the mountains if I ever need that wind layer. Turns out that everyone I go with also has this jacket.

It repels light rain too.

This is a 2.6 oz jacket (weight of 2 carabiners)
So there is no weight advantage to getting a vest of this type.

Its so breathable that the advantages of a vest don't really come into play.

As long as your scrambles are of the not super abrasive variety this ought to work.

Well made wind jacket with full zip for 2.6oz. It works & makes a good addition to a UL layering clothing system.

There is no inside and out... it is a single layer of ultrathin ripstop nylon. The jacket is thin! It flaps in the wind like tissue paper. It does however, work very well as a windbreaker.

What's the fit like? I'm tall, kind of thin, and worried that it will either be too short or too big and billowy.

MontBell clothing fits a little small. I'd suggest going up one size just to be sure.At LEAST one size! Their sizing chart is cuckoo! I'm a skinny 6'3", and the large fits me like a body condom. In most outerwear I look for a "medium tall", but in this I need an extra large.

Great jacket - sizing is small

By:

I got this jacket about 3 weeks ago and haven't had time to test it on any real hard hikes or runs, so I can't give it five stars yet, but it is very comfortable, surprisingly warm, weighs 3.2 oz (med) and has blocked a lot of wind and some light rain on my 15 minute bike commute.

I am 5'6" and 130 lbs and usually I wear small jackets, therefore I originally ordered this jacket in small and could barely get my arms inside, it was so tight in the shoulders. I now have the medium and it fits snuggly over a capilene shirt. It was very tight when I tried it on over a 200 wt fleece. I am happy with the fit since I was really looking for a windshell for windy spring days and summer mornings.

I recommend this jacket, especially if you are interested in low weight and some waterproofing, but go up at least one size (two if you are looking for an outerlayer).

I love the silky soft shell of the 15 denier Superlight fabric

I love the silky soft shell of the 15 denier Superlight fabric used on the Phantom, but don't care for the lining material. Does MH make a jacket that uses the same 15 denier Superlight for the shell AND the lining? Thanks!

If they do, it isn't for sale on BC. My guess is no though, because they make their ultralight windshirts out of their Transition fabric, which is a more softshell styled material.

It's DWR (Durable Water Repellent)coated, not "waterproof". DWR fabrics are good for slightly wet weather -nothing too severe.
