The Vest that Saved the Day
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
What was supposed to be another beautiful week in Grayson Highlands State Park, turned out to be one of the wettest trips I've experienced on the trail. Condensation at night was out of control and as my down bag wetted out on our first night, this vest repelled the condensation and the synthetic insulation kept my core warm and able to add heat to evaporate the moisture in my bag. Without it, it would have been a miserable night.
When not saving the day this vest is cut well, provides good warmth for the weight, and looks bomber.
It will be a staple in my pack for as long as I own it.
I loved the vest for how lightweight and warm it was. I don't know how mine was torn. I had someone point it out to me while I was wearing it. I was bummed. I am tempted to get another one but I am a little leery. I have a few Montbell pieces and I think they make great products, I just wish they would make their stuff a little bit more robust.
Great ultralight piece & versatile
- Gender: Male
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This is an excellent ultralight vest to add to your fall/winter kit. It is very warm for it's weight, and extremely comfortable due to the stretch sides. Fit is a little tricky though - I am 5'10'' 175lbs and the reviews I read lead me to initially purchase the men's medium. It was very snug and athletic fitting, and shorter in length, and that fit is great if you only intend to use this on the trail w/ only a base layer underneath, and are counting grams/ounces. However, since I also wanted to wear this casually around town (over a collared shirt or sweater) I ended up exchanging for a size Large. The large is slightly longer on me, coming below the belt slightly, and also a bit roomier for additional layers. I recently took this vest on an overnight backpacking trip w/ daytime highs in 40s and overnight in the low 20s. Hiking in a thin baselayer (patagonia cap1) over this vest was perfect in low 40s. Then I was able to add additional insulating layers + shell for the nighttime temps and was toasty. Easily packable, versatile, lightweight, and great looking! MontBell makes quality products for those of us keeping a close eye on pack weight.
This is one of the most bad ass vests I have ever owned in the down category. What I love about it is the flex on the sides making it much more dynamic and moving with your body instead of limiting it. When does that count, swinging ice tools, making a big dyno move or moving fast on a trail (possibly swinging some poles). The vest keeps your core nice and warm and allows you to also vent excess heat through the sides. By far the best vest I have ever owned in this genre. I am 5'10 160 and this vest fits me in a medium. I wear most clothing in a medium.
Quality is not there.
I've been trying to find a synthetic vest for awhile now and it has been a real miss. This vest was one of my attempts at a vest and WOW is this vest over priced. When compared to Mountain Hardware or my Patagonia, this vest looks like it should come from Target. It feels like it should be worth $20, not $114.95. Spend the extra $15-$20, you'll be very happy.
Warm and light
Surprisingly warm for how thin and light it is. This is an awesome layering piece for under a shell down into the teens (while moving of course) or on it's own over a l/s base layer in warmer conditions. I'm 6'1", 170 lbs and the medium is a pretty good fit although a little wide in the torso and a wee bit short. A large would be way too wide in the torso. In all fairness, this is a common problem for me in all brands. If not for the less than perfect fit, this would be 5 stars all day long!
Super Light, Fits Small
This is a really light piece that fits to layer with the ultralight synthetic hoodie.
Pros: Reasonably warm, tiny weight and pack space, breathes well, good colors.
Cons: fits small.
Nice vest, runs LARGE
This vest is ultra thin but appeared to be high quality. I wear an XL in almost everything on top and I was swimming in this vest, certainly order a size down. I ended up going with the North Face Redpoint, size L fit perfect and offered a little more warmth and the addition of a chest pocket.
