Face Old Man Winter.

The Montbell Women's Frost Smoke Down Parka is not messing around. 800 fill-power goose down is some of the best in the industry. The shell is windproof ballistic nylon to keep the icy blast from bringing you down. The Frost Smoke also features a fixed hood and adjustable cuffs to seal out the weather.

I tried the Montbell Frost Smoke Parka, TNF Micro Thunder, and Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody and Ultralight Down Hoody, and here are my observations.

The Montbell was the editor's choice at outdoorgearlab, but I found it had some shortcomings. It was not at all flattering, and despite the review saying that it was slightly longer than the Patagonia jackets, I found the small to be about the same length as the Patagonia XS. I loved the fleece hand pockets and the reinforced shoulders and elbows, but the hood adjustment is just mediocre. I don't think the Montbell comes in an XS, and I found the S to be too big and let too much of a draft in, so back to the drawing board. I'm 5'3", 115 lb for reference. Overall, a decent jacket if it fit, but the other jackets are way more flattering, and the hood adjustment of the Patagonia jackets are far superior to the Montbell hood.

Ultimately, I like the Montbell hand pockets and reinforcements, prefer the TNF Micro Thunder fit and length, and the Ultralight Hoody hood and exterior chest pocket.

This jacket is so warm, so lite and so comfy. It fits in all the right places and packs up super small for backpacking. I am 5'5", 155 lbs, chest is 36.5", high waist is 29", low waist is 32" and I went with a large. I ordered a little bigger so i could layer underneath with a sweater or fleece.

Is this parka totally waterproof? Could I use it for activities in temperatures like -30/-40°C with a layering system? If not what would you recommend? Thanks!

This is not waterproof. For a single jacket for those temps, I would look at the Patagonia Primo Down. Alternatively you could add a waterproof hardshell over this jacket.

I LOVE this jacket. It is not super puffy and frumpy like most puffy jackets. This color is really cute, pretty accurate to the picture. I get so many compliments when I wear it. It's thin, but keeps me so warm.
