Versatility, ultra light weight, and quality materials define the Montbell Alpine Light Down Parka. This 800-fill down jacket's genius is its simplicity: quality down stuffed inside a super light, weather resistant Ballistic rip-stop nylon shell. Since it weighs in at a mere 12.7 ounces (yeah, that's not a typo), you can stuff it into your pack for extra warmth anywhere you go. Layer it under your ski shell or keep it handy on a backpacking or climbing trip. Elasticized cuffs and an adjustable hem keep the chilly air out, and a smooth microfleece-lined collar feels comfy against your throat and chin. The roomy hood fits over your beanie to give you your own plush, warm microclimate, and hand pockets warm your wind-chilled fingers.

Bottom Line: Smart is the new ultralight.

Off to Alaska

By:

I bought this jacket to take on a trip to Alaska this summer. Will be heading to the glaciers and dog sledding and wanted something that would be light and warm. I think this will be perfect. Will also pack into a very small pouch in my suitcase. Can't wait to see how it works out. I went with an XL because I want to be able to put a fleece under it. Usually wear a Large. Fits perfectly!!

How is the fit? Is it true to size? Or do you suggest going down or up a size?

I ordered a small in the dark mallard, usually a small across the board, and it fit perfectly. I would not suggest going down as the jacket is not puffy at all. Definitely true to size.

I'm wondering about the color of these jackets. On the montbell website they look like different shades. Can anyone tell me how much like the backcountry colors they are?

I have the burnt orange and the color is closer to the montbell website. In general, I'd go with the Montbell website colors. Nothing against Backcountry, but the colors of their product pictures tend to be somewhat saturated.

hey i really want this jacket in the burnt orange but they only have larges left. I am 5' 9" (more legs than torso) usually wear a medium in the top but can pull off larges every now and then. would a large look ok or too big and drowning?

Perhaps it's too late for you, but the XL is there now... also, I have this jacket & a Thermolite MB jacket & this jacket runs much more generous throughout-- longer sleeves, more space around the bust, etc. I almost ordered the XL because my Thermolite is snugger than I would like, but I'm really glad I went for a large in this one.
PS-- I'm jealous- I love the burnt orange color, but I'm a sucker for a sale, so I bought the thyme green elsewhere instead. Great jacket!

I know that for Men's stuff, MontBell tends to run pretty slim and athletic. I had a friend that wanted this jacket, but she had to end up going with a Men's version because the women's didn't have long enough arms for her. I would think that you would probably be okay, and if not, backcountry has a killer return policy. Hope that helps!

It is matte with a dull reflection where light hits it.

How does the weight of this jacket compare to the weight of the Ultralight Down Inner Parka?

This weighs 12.7oz, with 3.3oz of fill with 30 denier fabric
The Ultralight Down Inner Parka weighs 7.7oz, with 2oz of fill and 15 denier fabric.

The result being that the Alpine Down is more durable, thicker, warmer and heavier than the UL Down.

does anyone know whether the back length has increased between the 2007 and current versions of this jacket? look like the old one was quite short for a few people, though on their website a centre back length of 25.7 inc for the current jacket is comprable to other similar jackets from OR etc?

cheers!

Yep, current year version (including 2010 model) has become a size bigger in width and length. I suspected the same thing, and just talked to a Mont Bell employee in their shop here, and he confirmed it.
