The Mont-Bell Alpine Light Down Jacket offers alpine enthusiasts extraordinary warmth without sacrificing compressibility. Ballistic nylon encases superior 800-fill goose down for wind protection and insulation, which is handy when you pull campfire duty on a chilly night. A cross-stitch pattern helps reduce bunching to maintain even insulation throughout.
Bottom Line: Lots of warmth that doesn’t take up lots of space.
The jacket is great in every way except shedding. It was worn once with a fleece underneath and a bunch of the down feathers were stuck to the fleece when she took the jacket off. My Patagonia Down Sweater doesn't shed at all. It's a bummer since she loved the color, fit, and warmth. If it wasn't for the shedding, I would have given it 5 stars. Sadly, I'll be returning it so I'm not stuck with a down-less sweater after several wears.
I do, it is light and oh so warm and replaces a heavyweight fleece in my opinion. I initially bought the ultralight but it shed a remarkable amount of feathers every wear and then some - so I traded it in for this model. This jacket runs a bit large, I am regularly 12/medium and the medium did not fit close enough to wear under my fitted waterproof shell. It was however, big enough to wear as a singular jacket with room to layer, but I traded it in for a small.
Bought to a) be warm, b) travel and c) look decent when traveling. Really happy with it as it is warm, is great for travel, and looks more than decent. Especially like the cut, and there are no big labels on the front announcing the manufacturer. The pockets are warm, with a somewhat fuzzy facing on the outside. The inside pockets are deep. One improvement would be a zippered pocket other than the hand pockets, to keep something small secure - that would make it a definite 5 star plus.

It's not bulky at all, and comes with it's own little stuff sack, about 8" long and 4" inches around. This jacket is the best compromise between Montbell's ultra light inner parka (which I ordered, and was just too thin), and something much bulkier like the Marmot down jacket I also own. I had previously tried a couple of Patagonia's down jackets, but didn't think they were as warm for being heavier as far as weight. I bought this specifically for backpacking, and to wear under a waterproof shell in cold weather. So far, it's been very versatile, and keeps me warm by itself in temps in the low 20's. It doesn't run as small as I expected (according to the sizing). I usually wear a medium and bought a large. It's a tad roomy, but I don't mind, as there's room to layer, and I'm not swimming in it.
Exceptionally warm for an 11.8 oz coat! Feels so light and comfy. Looks attractive compared to many bulky down parkas. I will likely wear it on errands, for walks between 20-40 degrees F, and carry it, stuffed, as an emergency extra-warm mid-layer for winter X-C ski outings and longer hikes. It would not be a good outer layer in wet weather, and it is not as washable as synthetic (they recommend washing it only once per season). Dark Mallard is a very attractive color. Size M is roomy for me (5'4", 122 lbs, with broad shoulders and long arms). It is quite comfortable over a fleece pullover. The two zippered hand pockets are comfy. Two inner pockets don't zip, but are quite large. I was actually shopping for a primaloft jacket, but this was SO much warmer for the same weight and so much more comfortable I couldn't resist it.
How do the Alpine Light and the Inner Parker compare in warmth? Is there much difference? I just received the Inner Parker and am not sure it will do...
The Alpine Light has 50% more down fill than the inner parka, as well as much tougher fabric. It will be far warmer, but is also nearly double the weight.
Both are made of the same high quality materials, but have different purposes. The Inner parka is meant to be a superlight midlayer, while the Alpine Parka is made to be an outer layer in colder conditons.
I got this a few weeks ago in preparation for a trekking holiday in the Himalayas, otherwise I would never buy a down jacket because a) they make me look like the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man and b) every 15-22 year old has one (generally TNF) and that annoys me. I did a lot of research and thought about the reality of my needs (ie I will never have to wear it skiing) and found this jacket fits my needs perfectly. It is incredibly light, like you are wearing nothing. It is very warm as well (although it hasn't been much below freezing here yet). I love the fact that it doesn't look like every other jacket out there, and the color (I got ruby) is as shown on the website. The fabric is pretty thin, as expected from such a light jacket, and I will be very careful to not wear it when doing anything with the possibility of shredding it. Overall a great purchase and a good deal for the quality.
