Meet the antithesis of cold when you zip up the Montane Women’s Anti-Freeze Down Jacket. High-loft 800-fill insulation wraps you up in warmth while you winter camp and hike. Wear this windproof down jacket alone or under a shell when the elements bring their worst. Bottom Line: Heat…marshmallows…OK who’s ready for s’mores?
Recently received this jacket from backcountry and it's awesome. The reason I chose it is because of the great price (on sale) and because it has more fill weight of down than other comparable jackets whilst still being very light.weight (because I'm a girl that feels the cold, I really appreciate the extra warmth!). I was going to get a jacket with a hood, but the anti-freeze was such a good price that I decided to compromise. The length and fit is perfect to ensure it keeps you warm, but it also looks really great for wearing around town because it's not at all boxy (which is a nice bonus for such a functional jacket). I think it looks nicer worn in real life than it does in the image (where the black looks a bit garbage-bag like), the design of the stitched baffles is really flattering when worn. I have the black and it looks really smart. In the pockets there are waist cinch cords so that you can adjust it for a really tailored-looking fit. If you are a curvy girl like me I don't think you'll find a better looking puffy jacket. Along with the hem cinch cord, the velcro/elastic adjustable cuffs are another nice feature enabling you to seal the jacket up tight if it's cold or they can be loosened to allow some airflow if the temperature is not so bad. You can also zip the (adjustable) collar up quite high and close to the neck to keep drafts out, and when worn with a flap beanie your head and neck are well covered (which makes up for the lack of hood). The jacket can be used for variable temperatures, and I think it's good for 3+ season use or anything where you dont need to take a heavier box-baffled winter jacket. I've worn my jacket in cold weather and it's totally snug, you can tell it uses high quality down because it has good loft and I haven't noticed any cold spots from the stitched-through baffles. Water seems the bead off pretty well and it definitely stops the wind while still being breathable. Overall, this jacket has a great design, and is so wonderfully warm and light that I don't want to take it off!
I'm 5'5" and 154 pounds and the (UK) size 14 was perfect for me - with or without a couple of layers. It weighs 385 grams on my scales.
I need help with sizing, please. I'm 5'2, 135 lbs. I wear Size 10 in clothing, but according to the sizing chart above, I wear a size 8. Do all he jackets at Back Country run one size large? Is it possibble to find a winter hat that has a knitted or woven attachment that covers the back of one's neck and the ears? Thanks.
My daughter is always cold and I bought this for her. The size she has is a UK 12 or US10 and she is 175tall and slim. It fits me too and I am 168 and 60kgs so I think you should definitely look at a size 10 UK/size 8 US.
Well, so far I am extremely pleased with this jacket! Did a lot of comparisons before buying and with this Backcountry.com price/sale, it can't be beat...in my opinion. I've tried on all the mainstream brands, North face, Patagonia, etc and have never been happy with the length...I can't figure out why they make down coats so darn short in the torso...down's meant for warmth, so why make a coat that exposes your midsection every time you raise your arms or bend over??!! Anyways, this Montane jacket is the best fit I have found for my body... I'm 5'10", 140lbs...long arms. The arms are long enough for me and have great movement...no restriction or tightness. I have yet to actually use this jacket for it's intended purpose, as it's June and I live in southern California. I will however be taking it up Mt. Whitney with me in a month and assume that it will be put to good use on the cold mt nights. Feels great and lightweight for backpacking. The color is true...ordered the the Berry and Black because couldn't decide on color. The Berry is true to the pictures and a great color, but decided to keep the black. Thank you Backcountry! (ps- awesome service and shipping speeds!!)
Oh ya, I ordered the UK 12/ USA 10 (works out to a medium, I think). Perfect sizing...long enough in the torso and arms. The fit looks sleek and form-fitting, but still easily fits a couple layers, including a medium weight fleece underneath. Both of my rain shells fit over it with ease. (An REI brand soft-shell and the Marmot Precip) (I tried on every combination of layers I could think of and they all work out well!) :)

I'm confused about the color...is black/cherry reversable? I can't tell from the pictures or info. If I order the black/cherry, will it be red or black or both??
I could never find a down jacket. The popular ones all had super slim hips, weirdly gaping necks, big floppy biceps, arms with no mobility. The Antifreeze is cut longer, the hips are wider, the neck is smaller, and while the sleeves are narrower, they manage to have MORE insulation. A jacket that keeps my arms warm? And I can move? Thank You Montane. Its so much easier to stay warm in a jacket that fits. Plus the cuffs, bottom hem, Waist, and NECK are all adjustable! There mustve been a woman on the design team.
So far the AF is light and warm and weather resistant. Im happiest when wearing this jacket under a shell or other jacket (in the 20's during the blizzard). I dont stay warm enough with the AF alone especially after dark. Maybe thats just me. Im usually freezing. I get warm enough in my jacket combos that I have even unzipped to avoid overheating. For me thats a first.
The sizing matches Montane's chart. The cherry is red-ish not pink-ish. Nitpicks-- My zipper is sewn a little crooked, but it works just fine. When worn on its own theres a cold spot on the tops of my shoulders--thats probably typical of down jackets though.
If you have a truly wide neck, beware, this jacket may not work for you.
Yes, I do....love it! I have the berry color, very nice. The coat is a little puffier than another 800 fill coat that I have, but not too puffy. It is a very warm coat, soft and comfortable. I had to do a size exchange, I thought it ran a little small. It was tight in the chest and I am by no means large there. I suggest buying up one size and using the adjustable cord to cinch the waist. I caught it on sale, so the price was right, thanks Backcountry and Montane!
would have loved to keep this jacket....sized up one, and the arms were still too short...and bit tight around upper arms (and I have skinny arms). Would go to men's, but nothing available except XL??!!
What do the horizontal lines up top look like on the body? Are they slimming or do they make you look wider? Also, how far down do they go down? What about the actual jacket?
After trying on a few jackets this one was the best!! It kept me very warm on my backpacking trip! It compresses very small, so it was easy to pack in my backpack and of course it is very light weight. I love a jacket with adjustable cuffs and a longer back so I don't get a cold draft when I am sitting down. The best part of the jacket is that it is NOT puffy! I am 5'2'' 130 the small fits perfectly with room for a few layers. I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a non puffy warm jacket!
What's the Montane XL women's size equal to in their sizing chart? UK16? What's the actual inner bust, waist and hip measurements of the jacket (otherwise known as 'design ease')?
I really love this jacket. It is lightweight, but very warm. I also love the extra length in the back. The drawstrings add the the flattering look of this jacket. I highly recommend it.
Good fit - the sizing chart is pretty dead on. I like that the jacket is longer in the back, and that the draw cords to cinch in the waist are hidden in the pockets for easy adjustment. It is warm, but not puffy and fits a woman's figure.
I've been shopping around for a down "sweater" for almost a year. I finally settled on this one and I love it. It's the perfect combination of warm, light-weight, stylish, and inexpensive. I'm 5'8 120lbs so i have trouble finding coats that aren't huge in the torso but have long enough arms. This coat has a draw cord around the middle as well as at the bottom so i can tighten the middle to get a great fit. I wear the coat around the city but it also goes with me when i backpack as a warm layer under my hardshell.
Seriously, this is the sweetest, most flattering down jacket I've ever seen. Warmth, quality materials and attention to detail make this jacket functional. Thoughtful design and a gorgeous color make it super fashionable. What a perfect marriage! There are drawcords at waist and hem to facilitate the perfect fit. Oh, and there's fleece around the zipper and it's cut longer in the back; two of my favorite details. That and the price! Can you tell I'm in love? I'm 5'8", 155 pounds (so a little curvy) and bought the medium. Perfect fit, and I can still fit a hoodie under if I want. I'm cozy and complimented every time I walk out the door with it.
I never write reviews but I just had to on this great jacket. I don't know where to begin. The color is great, the jacket is sooo light, its incredibly warm and most important its extremely slimming. This is such a great product. I know I will look for this brand when considering future purchases. I am so glad that Backcountry offers Montane products.
