Moment made its first real foray into the backcountry a few years ago with the Exit World and Underworld Skis, but the unwashed masses were looking for something a little more suitable for longer tours; enter the new Tallac Ski. With a shape that's based off the venerable, and hard charging, Governor, the Tallac's a more traditional ski than many of Moment's offerings, with a long section of camber underfoot, a moderately rockered tip, and a tail that's nearly flat so you can handle powder, roll over chop, make tight turns in techy spots, and rally on tough hardpack without turning your hip flexors into spaghetti on the ascent.
The Tallac isn't the world's lightest touring ski, at 7.5 pounds in a 178cm, but Moment wasn't about to go superlight at the cost of downhill rippability. The little that you give up in featherweight ascending power, you gain in stability, because Moment sandwiched the wood between two layers of triaxial fiberglass and carbon-fiber stringers, which helps the ski stay torsionally stiff and poppy. Accordingly, you can edge hard and enjoy a lively in-bounds style feel that won't have you feeling sketchy when the going is less than perfect. The Tallac's sandwich construction and UHMW sidewalls also help it stay stiff and burly, and a VDS rubber layer above the edges limits vibration and keeps chatter to a miniumum.
