Metolius designed the Safe Tech Deluxe Improved Harness for dudes who want that extra peace-of-mind when they're out on a ledge. Each component (including leg risers, gear-loops, haul-loops, and belay-loops) is engineered to withstand a load of at least 2250lbf, which is full strength and typically the max impact force rating of a modern climbing rope.

  • Reduce clutter at rappels and multi-pitch anchors with the two belay/rap loops
  • Front gear loops stay out for easy racking and rear loops lie flat when you have a pack on
  • Adjustable rise (distance between waist-belt and leg loops) for the right fit
  • 10kN-rated rope locator counteracts tie-in errors
  • Shaped foam for lower-back support
  • Durable tie points for years of use

Bottom Line: Be safe out there.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

Configuration of gear loops -

I've had my eye on the safe-tech harness for a while, and am interested in purchasing...

One thing that concerns me a little is where the gear loops are placed. It LOOKS like one loop is sewn to the bottom of the waist belt, the other is sewn to the top of the waist belt right above it.... i.e. the upper one sits on top of the lower one... i imagine racking gear would be difficult on the lower loop if you have gear on the upper loop BUT i can't see the harness from a side view - no web sites that i've found have a side-view of the harness.

do you happen to have a side-view of this harness?

I've got the old "deluxe" version and have only seen this new (improved) version in photos, but it looks to me like the main improvements are the addition of a second belay loop (last version had only one), and the placement of the gear loops.

Rating for this product: 5

It's really comfortable..

I just bought the model down from this one as I couldn't see any difference. Both have the same load ratings as well as the crappy double back buckle. Why 5 star? It is just plain comfortable. That with the 10 KN loops and 12 KN haul loop and I think its perfect with the exception of the fastening system... again, then why 5 star instead of 4... it really is comfortable. I'm 5' 10" and weigh about 210. It feels as comfortable as my old BD big wall harness. That big wall rig is twice as wide. Yea.. it was a hard decision but with comfort like this I can put up with the old, antiquated buckle... but it was almost a 4 star non the less.

Just an additional note. The model I bought, the 70 something one I mention above has a gear loop on the right side that hangs right over the forward part of your right thigh. About where your pocket is on a pair of jeans. I notice that they have moved this loop back on this model... I've gotten used to it but I would prefer the loop back where it is on most harness's. I am thinking of updating to this for that reason. Still amazingly comfortable though.

Hello all... How would this harness compare to the BD Speed Adjust

Hello all... How would this harness compare to the BD Speed Adjust Harness... I am a beginning climber looking for my first harness... the Metolius is more $$ but seems beefier (does that mean safer and more durable?)... the BD is less $$ but seems like it is easier to take off for bouldering routes. I am living in FL right now so am only climbing indoors... which would be more appropriate. Thanks.

I would go with the BD. There is nothing to be gained with this harness for a beginner climber. I would suggest getting something like a the Speed or Momentum. Get something fairly inexpensive and if you get really serious with climbing you will know what kind of features you are looking for in an upgrade.
