Great shoe, great traction!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 7"
    Weight: 120 lbs
    Size Purchased: 7.5

I owned the older version of this shoe, which I absolutely loved! After 8 years of hiking around RMNP and Colorado, the sole and traction finally started to wear out. I was so excited to find this new version, I wore it on a steep hike (2000+ feet in 2 miles) and found them very comfortable and with great traction. I originally ordered an 8, but found it too big and went back to my original size of 7.5.

Great Merrell shoe, as usual!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is my 3rd pair of Merrell shoes and they are great! I usually wear size 9, but in Merrells I wear size 9.5. Very comfortable, will keep buying them.

Looking for a low Merrell hiking shoe WIDE

Responded on

Wides are hard to find. If you have no luck with Merrill, I'd suggest you look at Keen (wide, but quality can be questionable on some models) and Oboz (wide, and my experience has been that quality is excellent...)

Size up like you would for running shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

I found these shoes locally on sale, but went to backcountry.com and other websites to read more about them and get others' opinions. Some people seem surprised that if they wear a size 8 in street shoes they had to size up in these shoes. That is so common with running / trail-running shoes that I automatically chose a half-size larger when trying these on. I wear an 8 1/2 in dress or casual shoes and often an 8 in sandals, but always buy size 9 for athletic shoes. These were no different; they are essentially an athletic shoe for hiking. They are built on a narrow last, it seems, but on some websites you can find them in wide width. The regular width happens to fit me perfectly. I can see how my little toes might get rubbed if I tighten the laces across the toe too tightly. The fact that the lacing goes all the way to the toe is a cool feature on this shoe!

These are a step up in sturdiness from the trail-running shoes I usually hike in, and a sturdy shoe is going to be stiffer. The upturn of the toe helps it feel more flexible at toe-off. These are light and airy, and I feel as though I will be able to run in them on sections of trail that beg you to run. And, FYI, Merrell and many other manufacturers make shoes like this in both waterproof and non-waterproof models, so those who expect this shoe to be waterproof haven't done their homework. I chose this non-waterproof model for the kind of hiking I usually do, where I value breathability more. I live in a dry climate, but if it happens to rain hard or I have to cross a creek, I know these will dry out quickly. If I mostly hiked in a wet climate, I would choose waterproof.

I got such a good price on these locally that if they wear out after a couple of seasons, it's okay. They are not hiking boots and I wouldn't expect that kind of durability.

Unanswered Question

I usually wear a size 7-7.5, and I bought these in a size 7.5. After wearing them for only a few hours, I can feel them pressing and rubbing on the outside of my pinky toes. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did going up a size work better? I'm worried that if I did that, my heel would slip.

Great Transitional Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I used these shoes quite a bit on a long distance hike. I had been hiking with boots and found them both ill fitting and too heavey. I still wanted some serious protection for my feet, but wanted something lighter. These shoes fit the bill prefectly! I normally wear between a size 8.5 and 9, but ended up getting these shoes in 9.5. I hiked several hundred miles in these shoes and they proved extremily durable and great protection for my feet! These shoes are the perfect step between hiking boot and using a light hiking shoe!

Most comfortable shoe ever!!! These are incredibly comfortable!

These shoes run very small.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I usually wear a 8.5 to 9 and my toes it the front of the shoes at a size 9. I am going to re-order these in a 10 which seems crazy considering my shoe size but I am going to try it. Like the looks of them and the tread seems adequate.

Gorgeous Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I recently have started hiking every weekend and was looking for a good hiking shoe that looked nice. I was deciding on either buying these shoes or the merrell grassbow hiking shoes. I decided to go ahead and get these since they were a little cheaper. I am definitely happy I bought these, these are beautiful! I love the colors, they aren't bulky or anything. The sole is a little stiff so it takes some getting use to, so I wouldn't recommend these for long hard hikes (6hr+) These shoes are awesome for day hikes though! :)

Still going strong!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have an older version of this shoe that I bought maybe 10 years ago for travel (the sole hasn't changed at all, the upper is slightly different) and they are perfect for my feet. I have wide and flat feet with extra wide toes and these never cause me any issues. I hiked the 4-day Inka Trail with these shoes and had happy (albeit tired) feet at the end of it. I tried replacing them with an ankle-high Keen hiking boot (because people say you need ankle support with a backpack) but ended up switching back to these because they are more comfortable - even with a load. I take these travelling as my main walking shoes and to the Arctic as my around-camp shoes. I've also worn them as cycling touring shoes, paddling shoes, scrambling shoes, etc etc etc. If (not when!) they eventually die I'll definitely be getting the exact same shoes to replace them. Is there a 6 star rating??

Great shoe but a little tight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This shoe is wonderful! Light weight, stylish, good tread, and comfortable. Except in one area - the toes. I never considered myself to have wide feet, but the side of the ball of my foot rubbed hard against this shoe after a few hours of hiking in moderate terrain. My feet never ached but I was rubbed sensitive on both feet in this area. I would either try a size up, a wide or a different shoe next time.

Fantastic!

I purchased these to hike with in the Pacific Northwest and they are a dream! They are comfortable for everyday wear but did wonderful in wet somewhat uneven terrain. Did a mild 6 mile hike and a steep 3 mile with no blisters or discomfort and no slipping laces. Supportive and cute too!
