Nice shoe but much too wide even with hiking socks. Had to return them. Manufacturers should remember some people have narrow feet!

This shoe is not waterproof and it isn't made with Gore-Tex. It's well ventilated with a mesh upper, which means that your foot can get plenty wet.

This is the third pair of Moabs that I have gotten. This is the only shoe I wear for hiking, even the fourteeners. I have the Merrell water proof version for winter hikes in the snow. Love 'em!! Best shoe for foot issues, even after bunion surgery, I can hike 13 miles in a day in the Rockies!

Ashley, my wife has been wearing hers for 3 seasons and they still look and function fine. She does not always wear these for each outing but they have a bunch of miles on them.
Good choice

Comfortable, versatile, and overall good shoe. Good for around town and on the trail. Not great traction in the snow.

Sine the Merrill Moab Ventilators are not waterproof, should I use spray to make them more waterproof?

Nothing will really make them waterproof. But you can use a spray to keep the leather from getting ruined by too much water. But, it won't keep the water out of the shoe.
Love them!

I love my moab ventilators. They are pretty light and super comfy. A great shoe for day hikes!

I have an average foot size 7.5, but problems with differences in my feet. I bought these shoes in a size 8 in desperation after trying out more shoes than I can name (including the Gortex version of this shoe which I found so hot & uncomfortable.) I tried them with Superfeet and my own orthodics, but they felt the best with the minimal footbed they come with. Straight out of the box I hiked with a med Smartwool hiking sock 9.6 miles & 3800 ft up Mt Washington in NH - my longest hike in ages. My legs were sore, but not my feet. I don't think I could have done that with any other shoe or boot, at least not on these feet!

She wears these shoes more than all of the other hiking shoes combined.

I purchased the men's version of these boots because I couldn't find ANY women's sizes in the wide width, in store. I had bunion surgery about 9 months before buying these and wanted to make sure they didn't rub on the sides of my feet. The men's version is naturally a bit wider than the women's, so these worked pretty well! These boots are great and didn't need a break-in period at all. These are my go-to boots and I only wish that they were waterproof as well. My normal shoe size fit too tight, and even an entire size larger was still too snug. I would be interested in picking up another pair in a women's size if I can find one that doesn't fit too tightly (btw, I decided to post this review under the women's version instead of the men's in the hope that other women with a similar foot or sizing problem would consider the men's version as well. They are very similar in color/design, and most people won't notice that they are actually a men's shoe).

Do men's shoes and women's shoes have a fundamentally different design? I can't find a women shoe that is wide enough and I am thinking of trying a men's shoe instead but don't know what the trade off might be.

Any suggestions for a good hiking shoes...

Any suggestions for a good hiking shoes for wide foot toe box? The downhill pressure on the front of my feet is unbearable that when the weather is good, I do end up just going barefoot when there's no gravel/rocks. Any input would be great!

Raquel, the toe box on these is average in size. If you want a large toe box area I suggest looking at the Keen's. IMO they have the biggest toe box of all the hikers.

Raquel, I would suggest going up a full size. Many trail runners wear a full size larger to prevent "black toe" while running/ walking down hill. Also a mid height boot will hold your foot in place better.

If you are going with a light hiker or a trailrunner, look at the Women's ASICS GT-2160 Trail...

My wife and I both have these shoes. These shoes are the most comfortable hiking shoes that I have ever owned. They didn't need a break-in period and have never made my feet sore. Maybe the best attribute is that they breathe so well.
They are not waterproof and actually absorb water like a sponge. The positive is that they dry very quickly if you do get them wet.

This shoe is cush! The first time I wore these shoes was on a super rocky, boulder-strewn trail - the kind of trail that usually hurts my feet. Not in these shoes - comfy out of the box, and they really protected my feet and kept them happy. I've hiked in the Blue Ridge and in the Rockies, and at the end of each day, my feet are never tired or achy. I guess if I could change one thing about them, I'd make them water resistant, but I have other shoes to wear in those conditions. These are great in the summer heat - my feet never get too hot. I'm a big fan.
So comfy

I am on my second pair of Ventilators. The thing I like best is you are ready to start hiking the minute you put them on your feet. Very comfy and I like the wide width. I got my husband to try a pair and he was impressed by there comfort.
Great all rounder.

Quality shoe, good looking all round shoe for a good 6 months of cycling, lots and lots of walking, and light-moderate hiking all around Europe. The only shoe I needed.. Accommodates well insoles for your feet if you have flat feet. Wouldn't use them for hiking with heavy loads as there isn't much support in the shoe for it..
Love 'em!

These shoes are so comfortable. They are great for outdoor activities as well as indoor. I stand on my feet all night at work on cement floors and they keep my knees from aching. I usually wear a 9 1/2 but I needed a 10 in this shoe.

Thanks for your specific size info..statements from other posters like ' runs a bit small' aren't very helpful. I wear a 10 so I will have to see if they make a 19.5... Most shoes don't come in 10.5.

After trying several different hiking shoes, I bought the Merrell Moab and I am very happy with them. I put them on and within half an hour had forgotten them completely---it felt like I had worn them forever. No break-in needed. The shoes are light weight, they breathe well and are comfortable pretty much from the get-go. After I have covered a good number of miles, I will report back about durability.

Really nice shoes. I like the bulky look, but with that comes added width and if you have narrow feet, these shoes are probably not for you.
When I cinch the laces as tight as possible, they work great. Great tread and my feet dont get near as sweaty as other hiking shoes i have owned.
