The Kids' Mix Master Jam Hiking Shoe feels lower to the ground and lighter underfoot than a traditional hiking shoe, and that's just what Merrell wanted it to feel like. While a boot like the Chameleon offers more ankle support, the Mix Master is significantly more agile and flexible. The synthetic upper allows plenty of airflow so hot toes cool off quick, and the grippy outsole digs deep into the loosest terrain. Merrell took a note from the world of minimalist design and crafted this shoe with a low heel drop, which more closely aligns the height of the toe and the heel to encourage a more natural footstrike. Comfortable on the roughest trails and versatile enough to wear on or off the trail, the Mix Master is a great choice for a child who likes to hike but can't stand the feel of a true hiking boot.

  • Fabric and synthetic upper feels light and cool on hot days and dries quickly when sweat or external moisture threatens the toes
  • Strobel construction (or force lasting) involves a construction technique that sews a sock liner directly into the upper, after which the upper is forced over a foot mold (or last) and the midsole and outsole are connected to the base
  • Strobel construction results in a shoe with improved flexibility overall, and in particular, in the forefoot
  • Thin EVA insole offers light cushioning and mildly dampens the effect of foot strike on your ankle and knee
  • EVA footbed is durable, lightweight, and it features an Aegis antimicrobial treatment that repels the bacteria that cause odors
  • Midsole offers cushioning that soaks up the shock and impact of rough trails
  • Air cushioning further improves the shock-absorbing properties of the heel and evens out the feel of the cushioning so your kid feels more balanced should he or she heel-strike
  • Low heel offset more closely aligns the heel height with the toe height to encourage a more natural midfoot or forefoot strike and improved proprioceptive balance the moment the foot strikes the ground
  • Moderate-sized lugs give the sticky rubber outsole the traction needed for loose dirt and trails without causing the shoe to feel sluggish across paved surfaces

Not very durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

My son had these shoes trashed in a month.. The internal heel frame support did not stand up very well and is now crunched down and the sole is pretty thin. Probably wouldn't by them for a kid who is super rough on his shoes.
