Merrell gave the minimalist-style Men's Mix Master 2 Trail Running Shoe nine millimeters of cushioning because it knows that sometimes you have to run a pavement before you can hit the trail. Don't let all that cushioning lead you to believe that the Mix Master 2 is heavy, though; lightweight material in the uppers, air cushioning in the heel, and feathery midsole foam keeps this shoe at just a touch over eight ounces. Midfoot or forefoot strikers will appreciate the low, four-millimeter heel offset and the protection of the one-millimeter-thick forefoot plate too. You get all the flexibility you need to feel light on your feet and the cushioning you need to protect your knees and ankles—this shoe is the best of both worlds.

  • Fabric and synthetic uppers feel light on your foot, cool on hot days, and dry quickly when sweat or external moisture threatens your toes
  • Strobel construction (or force lasting) involves a construction technique that sews a sock liner directly into the upper, after which the upper is forced over a foot mold (or last) and the midsole and outsole are connected to the base
  • Strobel construction results in a shoe with improved flexibility overall, and in particular, in the forefoot
  • 2mm EVA insole offers light cushioning and mildly dampens the effect of foot strike on your ankle and knee
  • EVA footbed is durable, lightweight, and it features an Aegis antimicrobial treatment that repels the bacteria that cause odors
  • Midsole features a total of 9mm of cushioning that soaks up the shock and impact of rough trails
  • Float midsole is 10% thinner and 25% lighter than previous Merrell midsoles
  • Air cushioning further improves the shock-absorbing properties of the heel and evens out the feel of the cushioning so you feel more balanced should you heel-strike
  • 4mm heel offset more closely aligns your heel height with your toe height to encourage a more natural midfoot or forefoot strike running style and improved proprioceptive balance the moment your foot strikes the ground
  • 1mm thick plate protects your forefoot from rough surfaces so you can transfer more strike impact to the front of your foot rather than the heel
  • 3.5mm lugs give the sticky rubber outsole the traction needed for loose dirt and trails without causing the shoe to feel sluggish across paved surfaces
  • Bellows tongue keeps dirt, debris, and small rocks from slipping into your shoe when you’re on the trail
  • Reflective detailing makes you more visible to car headlights so you can run safely along the side of the road

Good for rocky terrain

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I'm on my second pair of these shoes, both in the crazy parrot color. Coming from NB MT10s, I really like the spacious toe box (but be aware that I am female, so it may not feel as spacious to men with wide forefeet), the rock plate to keep the pointy rocks from poking into me, the 4mm heel to toe drop, and how incredibly light they are. They are very good for rocky terrain, as the tread seems to stick very well to the rocks. I also like them in the woods, but they are not so great on slick wet surfaces, which the rubber sole slips on more than my other shoes. The rubber tread is also pretty soft and my last pair wore out after 400 km. The top was still in great condition though.

These shoes are amazing

  • Familiarity:I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought a pair of these shoes months ago as a gift and since then I have had two more people request them as presents. All three of them absolutely love them. They are so comfortable that they get worn from morning to night, inside and outside. I have always loved Merrell shoes and this is just another great example of their outstanding quality.

My new everyday shoe

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large

Bought these to use for everyday use-going to the grocery store, gym, etc. I have been running barefoot for years now and can only wear lightweight shoes at any other time. My size 9.5 Mixmaster 2 weighs in at less than 8.9 ounces per shoe (I wear a size 9 dress shoe for sizing thoughts). The arch area of the shoe looks incredibly small when viewed from the sole but they are very comfortable on my foot. The sole is not very grippy and i'm hoping Merrell will make the same shoe with perhaps a Vibram sole next time I would buy it for hiking instantly.

Lightweight trial runner. Need a 12.5

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs large

This is a nice lightweight trail runner with a medium-wide toe box suitable as a transition shoe for those getting into barefoot running or those who just want a low drop, nimble, lightweight shoe. Ride is relatively firm and lugs look like they will provide adequate traction. They are a little more narrow than the glove series or other similar minimal/barefoot shoes. Unfortunately for me, the 12 is too small and the 13 is too big. I'm a perfect 47 in the la sportiva wildcat and wear 13's in mizuno wave series comfortably although I do have plenty of room in front of my toes on the mizunos.

Love these shoes!

There great shoes! I wear them for work and love them. They breath very well! It took me couple of days to get used to the fit. There made so that the foot is in a more natural position, almost like walking bare foot.
