Description

Spend more time hiking.

Merrell gave the Chameleon4 Stretch Men's Hiking Shoe a neoprene ankle collar to make it quick to put on, easy to take off, and keep the scree from getting in and rubbing your feet raw. Not stopping there, Merrell also added a stretch lace system to get you strapped in quickly and on your way. After all, you want to hike, not mess with your shoes. Once you have these shoes on your feet you'll be happy for the well-vented by still durable uppers which take on anything from scorching hot temps to thick, bouldery trails.

If there is one piece of gear that I have put through the wringer... it is these shoes. I purchased them on a whim 4 years ago and have been destroying them ever since. I've never seen a pair of shoes (or boots for that matter) stand up to the kind of abuse I've put these through. I use them hiking to and from the crags in Boulder canyon, I wear them as causal shoes, they are great on day hikes in the rockies, and I have even used them as wading slippers while fly fishing and kayaking. I had problems with blisters when I first got them (same as the picture posted), but that quickly subsided. I love the slip on design. This will likely be the last season with these shoes as they are literally disintegrating. I think I'll send them into Merrel headquarters so they can put them up in their museum....

The shoe is very comfortable and great for people who are not interested in the hiking boots with full ankle support. The stretch style is good but the only issue I had with them was the toe would separate from the shoe within like a month and that was under conditions such as working at a store, not extreme hiking. If the sole was sewn vs glued that would probably solve the problem of separation.

So I was actually looking at the Moab, couldn't find the right size, went with the Chameleon4 Stretch...and I couldn't be happier. I've traveled throughout the Middle East and put these puppies through some abuse...solid. They're very comfortable, breathable, light-weight, excellent fit, grip is superb and hey they even look good with cargo pants or jeans....first review of shoes I've done, for a reason, the only other pair of shoes over the years worthy of the same kind of praise were my Asolo Fugiitve GTX for more serious business....can't recommend these Merrell shoes highly enough.

I am so worried they will change this shoe I keep a new pair in reserve. Helps a lot with heal and calf fatigue

I really do love them, great traction, they look great and they are easy to slip on and off. I have worn them all over Afghanistan, Malaysia, China and other hotter than hell middle eastern countries. They are a great shoe that goes great with your hiking gear or a pair of jeans. The one hang up preventing 5 stars is the toe where the vibram sole meets the upper. After two days of non-stop hiking up limestone and granite terrain the sole separated from the toe area and also a little in the heal area... To the shoe's credit, I was beating the hell out of them, running, sliding and pinching them in between rocks (hind site tells me i should have been wearing boots...). All in all, I love Merrell products and will continue to buy their shoes.

I love them.

I owned a pair of original Chameleons. I abused them for 4 years. They went through mud, rocks, brush, snow and water. I used them for backpacking, some climbing, hiking, biking and kayaking. One of the best shoes ever. Before that i had a pair of merrell land pro ultras wich i wore for 5 yrs of abuse. I almost bought these but thought i would try out another brand. Hope I didn't make a mistake.

I like the chameleons, I have loved the chameleon2 and 3 that is why I got these chameleon4's and although they are more comfortable than chameleon3's probably because they made the upper stretchy sock a little softer at the heel, they don't feel as sturdy. Anyway, they feel more comfortable, but feel lose on the trail because of the extra stretch, specially going downhill. Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 because they are comfortable and the Vibram sole provides decent support when stepping over rocks. Also, these shoes look great when wearing them on a casual night out. You can't go wrong with them!

This shoe started off well enough. They felt great and light.

That wore off as the heel continued to rub my achilles
area raw during photo assignments. Very painful.

I too had the same issue where the shoe wore my heel raw. Once I built up callouses I was fine provided I wore wool socks. It's too bad this happens because aside from this issue I did like them. They are very easy on and off, light and have decent tread. More of a light hiking shoe and good all around every day shoe than something i would turn to specifically for hiking.

I agree, I haven't done any serious hiking in them, I left that for the Merrell Barefoot Tough Glove I had. But just walking around outdoors for a while I started noticing a hot spot where your sore is. I can only imagine doing anything serious for prolonged periods of time. Other than that they are great. Light, really grippy (gotta love Vibram), really tough and great ventilation.

I've had the Chameleon Stretch for over a year now. Great pair of Merrells. I use them mostly for trials. I take em to the extreme running and hiking near ravines and cliffs. When I first got them I took them on a 3 day backpacking trip through the North Country Trail, and they were awesome! Had one scary slip up on some wet boulders…, but other than that traction was great and really comfortable. I only wish they were Gore-Tex. Still fairly water resistant though. Fit like a glove and easy love. Got a lot of complements on these shoes.

I wore these (previous version) almost every day in a hospital setting, lots of walking, stairs, etc, for two years, and they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever found, and I have tried more than I care to remember. I have several other models of Merrills as well, and they're all great, but these are my favorites for long days on my feet. They've lasted very well - the soles have worn slowly and uniformly. Stitches have all held.

They go well with jeans, pants, sweats, or shorts. I'm ordering another pair, and pray that Merrill will continue making them for a long time! (Maybe I should order two or three pair...)
