Chameleon Evo Mid GTX Boot - Men's

The Merrell Men’s Chameleon Evo Mid GTX Boot uses both waterproof breathable Gore-Tex and Ageis antimicrobial mesh to provide weather protection without stinking up the tent at night. A Vibram Chameleon sole keeps you upright on the slipperiest trails and lasts through years of abuse and week-long backpacking trips. Merrell uses a nylon shank to increase support while still keeping weight low.

Bottom Line: More weather protection and less funk.

Excellent boot, I use it for backpacking and hiking .... They are very comfy, snugg and hold off water very well .... Upper is stiff enough for ample ankle support and the vibram sole offers very good non-slip protection on wet rocks and ground ... Toe box offers wiggle room and doesn't feel like your wraped in duct tape ... My only complaint which is well known with GOR-TEX boots is that they don't breath as well as i'd like ... If you remove them every 4-5 hours hiking with a good pair of merino socks you'll be just fine ... A 31 hour bus trip caused my feet to turn alittle white ... Overall, Excellent boot for wet weather travel.

I'm trying to find a shoe for a thru-hike...and I like these. Does anyone know if they will handle 30 - 40lbs loads well?

I'd go with a heavier duty boot strictly for better ankle & arch support for your loads. The weight is nice but I wouldn't trust them as much especially with a 40 pound pack on my back.

Didn't work for me

As soon as I put them on and stood up I just said no, there was a bulging section I assume was coming from the rubber strap on the side of the shoe and this put considerable pressure against the side of my heel on both feet, I decided to give them a chance thinking maybe they would break in so I went for one walk around town for about 8 miles and ended up with blisters in the same spot on both feet, this could just be me and maybe they will be fine for you but be warned.

Do these boots go well above the ankle? and would they be good

Do these boots go well above the ankle? and would they be good for caving?

Your ankle will be covered in this boot and will be good against pronation. Also, the Gore-Tex membrane will keep you dry in the wettest caves. The Chameleon is also good for caving because of the Vibram Chameleon sole. Vibram soles have four-way non slip capabilities. Probably the only time you'd want anything to do with four-way to be non-slippery.
