The go-to tire for Mavic clincher rims

When it comes to wheel system efficiency, you need as much as you can get. Your choice in tire and wheel combinations make a difference in your cornering ability and power transfer on both the front and rear wheel. With this in mind, Mavic engineered the Yksion Pro PowerLink SSC Clincher Tire as a rear wheel specific tire that dramatically improves speed, cornering, and flat protection with your Mavic clincher wheels.

You probably already knew this, but your rear wheel serves a different role on your bike than your front wheel. With the majority of your weight over the rear wheel, you need less rolling resistance. So, with this in mind Mavic engineers designed the tire to be highly responsive by using the harder 70a rubber compound down the middle. And since you still need grip on your rear tire while cornering, the soft and grippy 60a durometer rubber cases the side walls. The rubber isn't the only piece of technology that makes the Pro Powerlink Clincher a great rear tire. A high density casing lines the tire, improving its flex to prevent rolling it at a lower PSI.

Flat protection is also important while you're training and racing. Mavic uses a 127 TPI casing throughout the tire -- tough enough to stave off flats on the worst roads and cobbled streets. An additional Kevlar breaker is used under the tread for extra protection. Surprisingly, this addition only adds a superficial amount of weight to the construction.

The Mavic Yksion Pro Powerlink SSC Clincher Tire weighs in around 190 grams. It's available in the color Black with an SSC label and in a 700C x 23mm size.

I've been using the 2012 Yksion tires with great satisfaction. I just got a new 2013 pair of Cosmic Carbone SLR wheels, and the new SSC version of the Yksions have not been as reliable. I had 3 pinch flats in the first two weeks (1 of which hit front and back together) and today had a puncture in the sidewall. By comparison, the new tires are more narrow and seem more thinly constructed. Not sure if this contributes to the pinch flats and/or puncture, but my riding buddies are starting to give me a hard time about flatting so much. I'd be interested to see if others are having the same experience. Otherwise, ride quality and grip are great. Durability for the new tires is TBD, the old ones last pretty well but not as long as Conti 4000s or Michelin ProRace.
