Performance and luxury from France.

Leave it to the folks at Mavic to set a new standard in what we expect from a product. The technology in the Women's Scorpio shoe really isn't ground-breaking; it's race-proven technology commonly found in shoes that sell for $300 or more. What Mavic did is bring high-performance race-bred gear to the 99 percenters–that's folks who give at least 99 percent every time they throw their leg over a bike, but do it on a normal income.

Mavic builds the Scorpio Shoes around their Energy Grip outsole. It's made of nylon with glass fiber reinforcement. It's flexible enough from the ball of your foot to the toe so that you can hike and climb over rocky ledges without feeling unnatural. At the same time, the area from the cleat to the heel is plenty stiff enough to transmit your power to the pedals. Below that you'll find one of the best outsoles in the industry -- Mavic's Contragrip outsole. It's a sticky durable rubber and is beyond compare when treading technical, rocky terrain. Up front, there's a toe cap that both protects your toes and adds durability to the shoe.

It's very unusual to find ratchet strap closure on a shoe at this low price point, but Mavic didn't skimp here, either. It uses the Ergo Lite Ratchet–the same ratchet strap used on Mavic's top-shelf race shoes. the Ergo Lite has a large release lever that's easy to use with gloves on, and the strap itself features deep ratchet grooves for strong, positive, long-lasting closure. A synthetic heel counter keeps your heel locked firmly in place for efficient pedaling and elimination of heel blisters.

Inside the shoe is the Ergo Fit 2D insole. It's a two-density insole with a high-density heel cradle, and it's covered in an anti-bacterial material that resists stink. The 3D EVA tongue is ergonomically superior to other companies' flat, lightly padded offerings. It's perforated for ventilation and is lightly padded to give a little cushion, but not so much that your foot has room to move around when pulling up hard on the pedals.

Mavic Scorpio Women's Shoes are White/silver and come in sizes 6.5 - 10 in whole and half sizes. The shoes come with removable toe spikes.

Defective product

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

After three rides the release on the buckle broke making it difficult to loosen the buckle post ride. I thought of returning the item, but it broke after the 30 days, and it no longer was in new condition. I loved the product and the fit initially, but there was no reason for the release to break so easily. One star!

How do these shoes run? True to size?...
