World Cup ready.

When people pull the trigger on a long travel frame that has a 12x150 thru-axle in back, they're generally relegating weight to a non-issue. This shouldn't be the case. We're not riding motorcycles, where you might not notice a pound here or there, but bicycles, where we're the motors, revving up to get back to speed on fast downhill runs and trying to get a little more propulsion before going airborne and taking on that big hit.

For those bikes with 12x150 rear thru-axles, we say take a good look at the Mavic Deemax 12x150 Wheelset.

Mavic knows weight matters. They've drastically redesigned their DeeMax 12x150 Wheelset to be lighter, which makes the hoops faster and more responsive. Even for freeriders and downhillers, less wheel weight means the wheels accelerate faster, so starting, picking up speed after corners, after landings, and so on, gets easier. They did this by redesigning the rim. It's lighter, thanks to the new design and Inter Spoke Milling (ISM) where the extra aluminum between the spokes was taken out. The new design is also more compliant, with a wide 23mm spread between the rim walls to better spread out the tire tread. They also use the Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS 4) on the rear hub for a lighter, stiffer thru-axle, smoother bearings, and faster engagement at the pawls. And, as is now just about everywhere in their wheel line, the Fore drilling, only piercing the outer rim bed for the spoke nipple, means not only a smooth rim bed for tubeless, but a lighter, stronger rim as well.

Mavic never allows a fixation with weight get in the way of building durable wheels. If anything, the wheel is both light and overbuilt, which means you can overdo it with little to fear about from the things that roll.

The Mavic Deemax 12x150 Wheelset has 28 front spokes and 32 rear. The spokes are straight-pull, round, and double-butted. Both front and rear wheel have the three-cross spoke pattern. The rim is made from Maxtal aluminum. The rim joint is created with Mavic’s super smooth SUP process. Fore drilling means the inside wall of the rims is solid, with no need for spoke nipple cutouts, easy for running UST or tubes. Extra aluminum has been shaven off between spoke nipples on the inside diameter of the rim as well as the sidewalls, a process known as ISM. The hub shells and axles are aluminum. The wheels run on QRM+ bearings. The front hub takes a 20mm thru-axle, while the rear a 12mmx150mm thru-axle. The rear axle is part of their ITS 4 system, with a aluminum cassette body and two sets of two pawls inside for faster engagement. The cassette body is splined and works with all cassettes that use Shimano splines -- those with 8 or 9 cogs. The rim is 559x23c diameter. The recommended tire widths are 2.3-3.0". The hubs have ISO 6-bolt disc brake mounting. The rims and hubs are anodized Silver with Black spokes.
