Description

Warm is good, but overheating is a drag.

If you’re bathed in sweat as soon as you start exercising hard in a standard insulated jacket, try the Marmot Women’s Variant Insulated Jacket instead. You get plenty of puffy protection on the front panel of the jacket, while your arms and back get a breather thanks to the high-performance Polartec Power Stretch fabric. The stretchy nylon panels protect you from penetrating winds, while breathing and wicking like crazy. Thumbholes and lightweight stretch binding at the cuffs and hem finish off this performance piece that you can wear alone on winter runs , or layer under a shell on backcountry ski excursions.

thumbholes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I'm convinced that every jacket that is used as a base or insulating layer should have thumbholes. It just makes the constant taking off and putting layers on so much easier. This jacket of course has these and so many other great properties. Great athletic cut that is built for women, a warm core construction and a stretchy breathable fabric around the arms and underpits that allow for great movement. It is a great layer for activities where you need a light shell to protect against wind and weather but don't need a full down insulated layer underneath.

Awesome Layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I have the hooded version of this jacket. It's a great winter hiking layer because it provides insulation, a brief bit of wind resistance, but also balances all this with the wicking ability of the fleece. Many similar jackets have the insulation on the back as well as the front- this does not - which is GREAT because that's an area that I overhead a lot when wearing a pack and hiking. It's also great for the spring/fall because of it's warmth without overdoing it.

How well would this jacket fare in Yosemite...

How well would this jacket fare in Yosemite in the beginning of July? We will be in the back country facing temperatures in the teens at night and around 70 ish in the day...

Best Answer Responded on

Body temp and comfort are hugely subjective, but the core insulation should be fairly close to what you need, although the powerstretch on the arms might leave you a little cold at night if you're not moving. Throw another insulating layer on top of that and you should be pretty good. Early July in the Yosemite high country...bring lots of mosquito repellent and a net for your head and face. Hope this helps.

Love it and the sale price!

I love the fit most of all. I'm 5'9", 160 and it fits very nicely in the length and width. It's very light weight, colorful, non-binding,and slimming for a insulated jacket. So far I own one jacket and two variant vests (black and purple). My patagonia vest hangs in the back of my closet now.

Great design and super cute

This is a great jacket to add to your puffy collection. I love the slim cut and great colors! Nice and lightweight, it is going to be perfect for spring and fall, and layered under other jackets in the winter.

Great XC skiing jacket

This is my go-to for XC skiing. I wear it over just a tech tank top in about 30-35 degree temps. It doesn't totally block wind, so I'd still use a wind proof shell in colder days. I overheat pretty quickly when XC skiing, and it's taken me many tries to find an ideal solution... This jacket is it! I agree it's a bit snug in the chest/shoulders, but it is stretchy so it still moves with you just fine. I wear a Medium and I'm about 5'5" and usually wear a size 6-8, 36C.

my go-to jacket for Fall

A slim-cut jacket that's perfect for autumn temps or layering on cooler days. Thumb holes are great and I like that the back of the jacket falls a little lower. Great jacket!

Nice design

I was looking for a jacket that would give some extra warmth for running in the winter months here in Colorado. This jacket is a great design idea...stretchy polartec on arms and back and synthetic insulation on front core and a nice comfy soft collar that can be zipped up to ward off the wind. Two front pockets are handy too. The fit of this jacket is very slim/snug. For reference I am 5'4" 105 lbs and the XS fits but is snug..although I am able to layer two layers of 200gram Icebreaker baselayers under it for runs under 45 degrees. I think the most slim part of the fit is in the chest/shoulders. Lucky for me (in this instance anyway) is that I have a small chest 34A so it isn't a problem. If my chest was any larger this jacket would not fit me. I do have broad shoulders and that probably makes it snug in the shoulders because of my issue. This jacket keeps me comfortable while running in lower temps...would be great for xcountry skiing too. I think that Marmot could improve the fit so that more body styles could wear this jacket. If you have a slim build this would work well for you. It may be worth trying on two sizes to get a good fit depending on your shape. Hope this helps someone!

Cozy, Extremely versatile & functional!

I love the Marmot Variant jacket! It is the ultimate jacket for many uses. The fit is perfect for running and other outdoor activities (it's an athletic fit). The core is lightly insulated to keep the rest of your body at just the right temperature to function at your best, whether it be trail running, walking the dogs on a cool day, or icing your legs in the river or bathtub! It is not bulky at all, which is also a great layering feature. I've used this jacket for all of these functions and hope to get another color soon!
