    Details

Staying warm is good, but overheating is a drag.

If you’re bathed in sweat in your standard insulated jacket as soon as you start exerting yourself in cold conditions, give the Marmot Women’s Variant Insulated Jacket a try. You get plenty of puffy protection on the front panel of the jacket, while your arms and back get a breather thanks to the high-performance Polartec Power Stretch fabric. The stretchy nylon panels protect you from penetrating winds, while breathing and wicking like crazy. Thumbholes and lightweight stretch binding at the cuffs and hem finish off this performance piece, making it perfect for wearing alone on winter runs or layering under a shell on backcountry ski excursions.

    Mmmmmarmot!

This has been (along with my Patagonia down sweater) the most used jacket in my closet. I've had my Variant for almost 4 years and it spans seasons, uses, and settings. It wears like iron and it always is just right to have around as a stand-alone or, when it's really cold, as my mid layer. Plus, it's got a knockout fit. I love that it's trim enough to be super flattering but cut perfectly through the shoulders to allow all sorts of movement. Perfect in my book!

    My Favorite Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

This has become my go-to jacket for just about everything. Warm, but breathable, I use it for my commute (walking), biking, and running. Keeps me warm, but never leaves me feeling too hot. The fleece on the inside is SO soft, and unfortunately prone to picking up dust and hair, but otherwise great. The arms are a little long, but I like them that way anyways. I would say it fits snug enough to work as a mid-layer, but has enough stretch you can fit a heavy sweater underneath. Love all the pockets (3!). Though not waterproof, dries quickly if you're caught in light rain.

    A Go-To Layer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this mostly for a mid-layer option. I run chilly most of the time and I love how soft it feels against skin with the powerstretch arms and back. It keeps me much warmer than most of my other fleece due to the thermal r on the front of the body. I end up wearing it most every single ski day over a tank top and I stay the perfect temp no matter how cold it is outside. If it's super cold I'll throw my Isotherm in between my shell. If it's warmer, just my shell will do it. Turns out I use it quite often as a fashion item as well. It's perfect for a wintery run or snowshoe hike, to travel on a plane, or as a jacket on a cool summer night. I get a compliment on it almost every time I wear it. It washes well too (huge to me, I hate line drying). A very worthwhile purchase, you'll find yourself wearing this a lot.

    Excellent Midlayer!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I love the Marmot Variant jacket! It is warm and cozy under a windproof layer for hiking, and is great on its own for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. I love the coziness of the polar fleece and the permeability of the side panels and back. It breathes really well when you're working up a sweat.

Mind the size chart. Marmot doesn't do vanity sizing, so while I am an XS in most other outdoor brands, Marmot's size chart dictated an S for this one. It fits close to the body, and (bonus!) has an awesome little pocket inside for your MP3 player, chapstick, whatever. It is incredibly fashionable, too. I love wearing it around town, for drinks, etc. I almost feel bad wearing it the way it's meant to be worn: outdoors, sweating, and putting the fabric through extreme stress, but it has held-up really well. Get this midlayer-- you won't regret your purchase.
