Strategic fabric placement.

When you're trekking across exposed alpine terrain, you need a combination of tough weather protection and high breathability, which is why Marmot made the Men's Vapor Trail Hooded Softshell Jacket. Windproof softshell fabric in the body and sleeves increases weather resistance where you need it most while the side panels and back feature a more breathable softshell fabric so you stay dry on steep sections of trail.

  • Marmot M2 Softshell provides an ideal blend of weather resistance and breathability
  • Windproof Softshell in the body and sleeves adds protection where it's most needed
  • Breathable softshell panels on the sides and back keep you dry and comfy
  • Wicking backer fabric moves moisture away from skin so it can quickly evaporate
  • Athletic fit and a generous amount of fabric stretch provide complete freedom of movement
  • Angel-Wing Movement prevents the jacket from riding up while reaching overhead
  • Fixed adjustable hood provides additional protection in stormy weather
  • Draw cord hem and asymmetric cuffs keep wet weather out
  • Front pockets can be accessed while wearing a pack or harness
  • Internal zippered pocket with headphone port stows media devices
  • Zippered sleeve pocket provides quick access to trail essentials

Love it!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 8"
    Weight: 165 lbs
    Size Purchased: Medium

This is by far my favorite trail running jacket when the leaves start to fall and the temps start to drop. The front of the jacket provides much more protection than the back- the front definitely blocks more wind and the back allows the jacket to breath when your core starts heating up. On the inside of the front, there is a thin fleece lining to provide a little extra warmth. A perfect blend to have when exercising and staying comfortable.
The hood is a bit roomy if you don't have anything on your head but once you put a beanie or hat on its perfect. At the very top portion of the hood- there is a tiny brim which can help keep some of the elements out of your eyes/glasses. I'm not sure its big enough to fit a climbing helmet underneath the hood.
Plenty of storage with pockets on the left arm, left/right stomach and inside the left chest for an audio device (fits an iphone 6). The zippers pockets are a little high on the stomach but I think that is to prevent items from dropping too low in the pocket and hitting your waist or thighs.
The asymmetric cuffs have a little stretch and make it easy if you want to put some gloves. The pull cords on the waist make it easy to regulate heat, adjust the fit, and control where the elements go.

How does this jacket compare and contrast to Marmot's ROM? Which I have and love!

Solid jacket!

Very lightweight but it does a great job of blocking the wind! I bought it on sale in the fall (I believe) and even used it with a fleece on mild days in the winter when there was not much wind. I wear it all the time and it has held up excellent! Now that the days are more mild it's a great light layer for quick hikes and general activity. Fits true to size in my opinion, sleeves may be a bit long for some but that's why I buy Marmot jackets (I have long arms).

Fit Well, light weight and comfort

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Use it for daily commute, in cold air con room.
Only thing to comment was its front pockets were a little too high up. not very get used to it.

Hey folks, how well does its hood fit over a climbing helmet? (A critical consideration) And would you recommend M or L if I am 6'2'' and 180 lb? Thanks!

I don't have this jacket, but it sure doesn't look helmet compatible from the photo. Also, they usually mention that in the description..

It may fit over a climbing helmet, depending on the size of the helmet. I would order a Large to try first.

Late to the game but the hood is a decent size and may fit if you are not zipping it up all the way. If you zip it up all the way I doubt you'd fit it over a helmet even with a large.

Fitted, soft, and durable

So far I love this jacket. It is light, soft, warmer than I expected, and fits really well. It has many of the bells and whistles that you'd expect but has a reasonable price.

What is the temperature rating for this jacket?

Best Answer

Hey Eric,

Unlike sleeping bags there isn't a standard thermal test mainly because unlike sleeping bags with the use of a jacket there are too many uncontrollable factors.

Besides, this jacket is more for for keeping wind and rain out and if you want to keep warm you are going to have to wear the appropriate layers underneath.

How does this jacket compare in fit to the Estes hoody? I tried on the Estes recently, and it fit perfectly, but i need something a bit more. Im 6' 190lbs and an athletic build.

Best Answer

According to Marmot's site the Estes has a regular fit versus the Vapor Trail which fits athletic. The Vapor Trail will fit slightly smaller but, the stretch in the jacket will allow you freedom to move.

Amazing Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket seems to be just about perfect. I'm 6'2" 155lbs and got the medium, fits perfect. Love the stretch of the fabric and the hood is really amazing. I've been using it in colder temps ranging from 15 F to 35 F and it was perfect. For example I layered a long sleeve synthetic base layer with this at 25F with 15mph wind on some day hikes and I stayed warm and dry. At 15F I added a Marmot Reactor fleece underneath with the base layer and stayed warm and dry, even hiking at 3.5 mph on some moderate hills. The fleece lining on the chest area is a welcome addition as well providing warmth and comfort. The hood design is great as well as it turns with your head every time and is really comfortable because the fabric on this jacket is so flexible.

The fabric definitely cuts most of the wind and I didn't get wet in a heavy snow. I ran the sleeve under the sink faucet for a while and it shed the water perfect.

The jacket is lightweight, layerable, packable and functional.

Great Jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is the ideal jacket for running or other highly aerobic activities in cold and below freezing activities. The hood is ideal for keeping warm in wind while the breathable material keeps you from getting sweaty. The cut is also very slim with nice long sleeves which is great for me! (6'2" and 150 lb so it's hard to get clothes that fit well)

My new favorite piece of gear

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Lightweight, fits great, top notch features, unbelievable deal from't say enough about this ultra versatile jacket! Ran a quick 2.5 miles on trails today after work...64 degrees and steady rain. Stayed warm & dry...most importantly, I didn't overheat due to the ability to ventilate by simply zipping the front zipper up or down accordingly. Hand warmer pockets are huge. Interior pocket has integrated earphone my iPhone stayed dry and I was able to track my run via the STRAVA app. Length of jacket is perfect for my 6'4" frame... Nice trim, but not tight/restrictive cut to this garment too. Buy one won't regret it!!!

light is right

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

really great light jacket, with excellent breathability and waterproofing, light weight, flexible, the angle wing movement makes climbing etc very manageable.

I've now had this jacket through a rainy fall season and put it through the wringer. One of the best pieces I've bought, its breathable and sheds water amazingly, put a light (really light, its a fairly athletic fit) puffy underneath and its great through the fall, running/biking in rain and light snow is great. Not that I TRY to climb and scramble in the rain, but this jacket really made that experience more fun.

Also the hood deserves some mention, lots of hoods are adjustable in the wrong ways or find a way to impede your vision, this hood has a nice small brim that puts water away from your face, and stays pretty much out of sight, very comfortable and useful! Will not fit over a helmet very well though.

Are you kidding me !! This jacket does it all.....I just got back from Peru and summited 2 19K peaks and this was my go to jacket. Fit is great 200lb 5'11' Large size. I'm thinking about another one just to have in reserve.
