Marmot Ultima Softshell Jacket - Men's - 2008 BCS

Bought this jacket for commuting to work on my bike. During the day its 70 degrees, at night its 35 degrees. wear the jacket for both ways and it keeps me cool during the day and warm at night. Great biking jacket, perfect for layering for colder weather and breathable enough for warmer weather. I would recommend this jacket to a friend.

I have had this jacket for about a year, and I like it, but I am questioning it's durability. I wear this jacket for 2/3 of the year, and the material is starting to wear down. There are spots on the jacket (especially right around the tips of the sleeves) where the material is completely worn through. Good thing BC has a killer return policy.

I really liked my Bionic, but I accidentally left it in a cab. One thing I didn't like about it was it's breathability.

After extensive research, I settled on the Ultima Softshell because of other reviews and it was on sale ($120). I also loved the color (Tempest, which isn't available anymore?). I'm 5'11, 170 and the large fits perfectly (i.e. room underneath for a sweater/sweatshirt)

The construction is excellent. The places where water would hit have a more resistant fabric. The remaining fabric (under arms and the back) seems more breathable. I use this as part of a layering system, so breathability is very important.

I'd have preferred the whole jacket to be totally water resistant and have pit zips instead, but pit zips are almost non-existent in softshells.

The arm pocket is nice, but would benefit from having a headphone cable opening.

My 1st purchase from SAC and this coat is awesome. It is perfect for the GA weather. Toasty warm and wind resistant for the cold days/nights, yet breathable for the cool fall days. I'm 6'2" and the XL is slightly big. This will be my go to coat and it looks great.

As the other reviewer said, it's certainly not a below-freezing shell, but to me it stays very comfortable when the temperature drops. It probably just depends on how hot or cold you typically are. I have trouble wearing most jackets because I always get too hot. This one stays warm but never seems to get me to the point of sweating. It's SUPER comfortable and very well made. Not the greatest if it's really windy but it's good at repelling rain.

If you're looking for a lightweight jacket you can't go wrong.

Nice jacket, but not what I expected from a warmth perspective. I have had other softshells that were half the price and warmer. I expected a something similar to Marmott's Gravity or Molan softshell as far the thickness of material. So depending on the application, I would say this jacket is for activities in the upper 50s and 60s, and not sufficient for 50 degrees. Not the Ultimate softshell in my opinion.
