Smart, simple, and the ultimate alpine accommodation.

It has a simple and sleek feel, but the Marmot Women’s Spire Jacket is seriously high-tech and fully equipped for any alpine adventure―be it mountaineering, climbing, or backcountry skiing. For starters, it provides bomber weather protection via waterproof, breathable, three-layer  Gore-Tex and fully taped seams. A hood is standard on any tech shell, but this gale-force, helmet-compatible head shelter features a fine-fitting ERG adjustment system and a laminated wire brim to keep precipitation, wind, or sun out of your eyeballs. The Spire has PitZips underarm vents and a zip-off powder skirt so you can go streamlined when it's not in use. Even the hand pockets have smart design behind them: they sit above a pack belt or harness and are laser-drilled for added breathability.

For serious performance, a shell has to allow freedom of mobility, and of course Marmot gave this jacket its Angel Wing Movement for unhindered arm movement, imperative on a climb and always appreciated. And its hip length adds coverage, which is handy in a harness. No small thing if you've ever chafed your chin, it also has a DriClime lined chin guard. Full accommodation, well thought-out, and yet awesomely simple.

Here's what others have to say...

Perfect fit

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

This jacket is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a Gore-Tex jacket because I was getting soaked on snowy days. I'm 5'8" and I purchased an XL so I could wear my down coat underneath the jacket. This coat really works for me. I'm 5'8" and athletic. It fits great in the waist and hips, with extra room for layering. It also covers my generous rear end with out getting bunched up around my waist. I felt free and comfortable skiing and snowshoeing.

Fit was great for me!

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

Just got this jacket and haven't been able to field test at all yet, but I wanted to clarify the fit and give another perspective because for me, it's definitely not a two star jacket! It sounds like the other reviewer and I might have the opposite body type because the fit is great on me. I'm 5'9" and very lanky/athletic. Usually wear a large in jackets or an XL if I want a baggy fit or a little more room in the chest (DD's don't always pack into jackets all that well). I got an XL in the Spire and I really like the fit. The L probably would have fit fine, if a bit snug, but I wanted something I could throw a lot of layers underneath if needed.

There definitely IS a substantial roominess in the shoulder and chest area, but not to an off-putting degree because it gives a lot of range of motion in the shoulders, especially when you're wearing a backpack. The waist is a bit fitted but it wasn't tight at all for me and there will be room for layers (I usually wear a 10 or 12 in pants). The arms ARE very long, but I like that because my arms are very long as well.

What I really love about this and it's something I don't see in a lot of women's technical shells is the added length. I don't want a jacket that hits right at the waist because a. I don't want any gap between my jacket and pants, and b. I don't wanna look like a ski bum from 1984. This jacket hits at the hip and has a little extra length in the back for good booty coverage. I'll write more when I get it out in the snow and play in it, but just wanted to add my two cents and another view of the fit! :)

What is the center back length of a medium?

Odd fit

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs small

The quality and durability of this coat is fantastic and it is a gorgeous deep, rich color (electric blue/purple). I really wanted to love this coat as it was the quality I had been looking for (and I fell in love with the now discontinued electric blue color) but the fit was so strange that I just couldn't keep it. Very big and baggy in the top (yes, I realize their loose fitting "angel wing" arm cut is intentional). The sleeves were very long, the coat in general was quite long, but then the "fitted waist" was oddly small and tight in the waist and bottom. If I sucked in I could get the coat to zip, but would not have been able to put any layers or fleece underneath. I ordered a size L...I am 5'6 and usually wear a size 10 in dresses and pants. My waist is typically the smallest part of my body, and usually have issues getting pants to fit, not tops and jackets. Maybe this jacket would work well for a tall person with a very petite waist and no hips? Would have sized up to an XL to have the waist fit but then the rest of the coat would be even more huge. Since the description of this said that its a regular fit (which, to me, was very irregular) I was scared away from the Marmot brand as a whole. In general, beautiful jacket...very odd, overly shaped fit.

Yes, Marmot jackets tend to run a tad smaller just like the other brands like HH & Spyder.

What are the waterproof and breathability...

What are the waterproof and breathability ratings on this jacket?

It's gore-tex, so you're getting the very maximum you can find out there in waterproof AND breathable! I don't think gore-tex has actual numerical ratings, it's just "maximum guaranteed waterproof/breathable."
