Description

Lightweight shell with waterproof fabric gets you climbing quicker than a flash.

It may weigh less than a pound, the Marmot Men's Speed Light Jacket boasts some serious protection to keep you comfortable while you climb. Gore-Tex Pro 3-Layer construction with fully taped seams makes the fabric completely waterproof so you stay dry in case a storm rains down on your parade. Angel-Wing Movement lets you reach, stretch, crouch, and bend on the wall without exposing your body to the cold weather. Water-resistant PitZips let out some steam while you climb, and they close up when you belay your buddy. Water-resistant Pack Pockets are accessible even when you have a harness or pack on. And the nylon ripstop shell handles the wear-and-tear lifestyle of rock climbing enthusiasts.

An athletic fit reduces bulk around your body and gives enough room in the shoulders for unrestricted movement. Its Gale-Force hood tightens across your head when the winds howl thanks to the ERG adjustment system, and the laminated wire brim keeps the hood out of eyesight so you can focus on the rock you're climbing. Asymmetric cuffs keep the sleeves out of your hands. An elastic drawcord at the hem prevents blustery blizzards breezing up your body.

The rescue helicopter will find me

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Insane how well it performs for its weight. Great fit. Best hood. My only complaint is that it packs down too small to make a nice pillow :)

being that its a Pro Shell and not Paclite, how packable would you say this Jacket is? I know that its lighter than the Minimalist, but is it bulkier in a pack?

How can I distinguish between models with different Gore-Tex versions. I mean to distinguish older from newer models?

Best Answer Responded on

It was only last year that the new Gore-Tex Pro was put into place so anything 2012 or older will have the older Pro model. The variants in the sku that are on sale are the 2013 models and the variants that are currently full priced are the 2014. Either way both models should be the newer Gore-Tex Pro.

what is the center back length on this for the XL? also, should I size up to get the hood over a Ski helmet?

Responded on

This jacket in size XL will be just shy of 30 inches. The hood is already helmet compatible so you shouldn't need to size up to keep you noggin protected and dry at the same time.

I've seen two versions of the black color-way online. One is all black, and one has white/grey highlights. Which one is this, or do you have both styles?

Responded on

I think the all black is the original model with the older version of the Gore Tex Pro fabric. The white zip version is updated, but was a 2013 color, from what I can gather, so it's discontinued, and on sale most places.

I'm 186 cm tall but thin (68 kilos). Do you think the medium size will be long enough?

Best Answer Responded on

Andrea,

From my experience Marmot products have been better for the tall / thin type more so than say a TNF product.

But if you could give us the following measurements, we could offer the best recommendation:

Chest
Waist
Inseam (Yes - your pant inseam, to get an idea of your torso length)

Thanks!

Ok Jared, my inseam is 85 cm, my chest 97cm, and 75 the waist.
So it must be: Chest 38,19
Waist 29,53 inches
Inseam 33,46 inches
Thanks for the help!

Andrea,

So based on your height and torso / leg proportions a Medium or Large in this jacket will work nicely in regards to the length.

Based on your chest and waist measurements a Medium in this jacket should work nicely.

I'm similar to you in height but have much wider shoulders and know that the Mediums in this work for me length wise and waist wise but not shoulder-wise. So I go for a Large in Marmot products.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Amazing in the worst conditions

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

After only one major trip I feel confident labeling this review as 'through the ringer.' January overnight in the Adirondacks where an afternoon of torrential downpour turned everything everywhere into liquid form. Spent 10 straight hours in soaking conditions, bushwhacking, river crossing to avoid ice jams...and through it all the Speed Light held up amazingly well. While I was not bone dry (nobody would be in conditions like that) the next morning when I slipped it on it was 90% dry...and all I did was keep it in between sleeping bags for my tent-mate and I during the night. As a bonus, it even repelled wood-smoke smell despite some time standing around the fire in the evening.

The perfect shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've had this jacket for about 1 month and it's become my favorite jacket. It's super light, but still wind/waterproof. As the weather gets colder, I just add a warm mid layer and I'm good to go. The fit is trim/athletic.

As always, Backcountry service is impeccable.
