Nice jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Nice jacket! Wear it for the second year - satisfied. Frosts -25-30 degrees Celsius it is not how much, even at high humidity, you feel comfortable in it, ass covered.

Great coat

I think this is my 4th attempt at a new warm winter coat. This is finally the one. It's a bit heavier than my old TNF down coat, has a detachable hood, and is quite warm.

Puffy and nice!

Sweet jacket that will keep you warm during the cold winter months. The zip off hood is nice.

Hi there! What is the comfortable temperature range for this jacket? I plan to wear it in the city, but every winter there are few days with -20 C, so I need warm winter jacket

Hi Anton,

It's hard to estimate comfort ranges on jackets due to a number of different variables: activity level, individual body type, metabolism, etc. What I do know is the Shadow has 240g of 650 fill down--so while it's a warm coat, you might feel a little cold on the coldest of days. If you wanted to go a step warmer, check out the Marmot Greenland (here: http://www.backcountry.com/marmot-greenland-baffled-down-jacket-mens?rr=t), but honestly, I think the Shadow would be a perfect coat for what you are describing.

How would the warmth of this jacket compare to the Marmot Greenland Baffled Down for use on Aconcagua? Thanks!

As far as the warmth goes, the Shadow has 240g of 650 fill down, whereas the Greenland has 300g of 800 fill down. That means that the Greenland is unquestionably warmer. With the shadow, you're getting a lower quality down (heavier), waterproof exterior (not necessary for cold temps, and also heavy), and some reinforced areas.

The Greenland is a tried and true jacket for 7,000m expeditions--a perfect coat for that type of climbing. I would strongly recommend it.

I am fairly sure you will have to get a hold of a Marmot representative to get this answered. Sorry.

how packable is this jacket? I know it says that it is waterproof which is a plus, but I get the feeling this takes away from its compressibility.

Responded on

It's not a jacket designed for packability, so despite it's being down, it won't pack down that small. This is designed to be worn as your only layer, as opposed to something like the Greenland Baffled down jacket, which is designed to be put on as an overlayer when you stop, and packs down very small.

this seems bulky.. I am looking for a waterproof jacket for cold rain/snow and to wear on my once a year ski strip, as well as just for a warm winter jacket..
any ideas?

I bought the shadow jacket for an "urban wear" jacket, however it would perform well almost anywhere. In severe cold, wear it over a fleece item, like the "monkey phur" numbers from Mountain Hardware. I no longer can ski the steep and deep (age is a beotch) but the Shadow would be a perfect ski jacket and seems designed for that purpose in fact. Darn sure a beetter choice than my prior ski wear preference of Bogner ... about $1400 less expensive to start with ... and well designed in the details, like the hood flaps not waving in the wind, but dovetailed in to the collar. Well baffled and no cold spots, and not bulky at all compared to many other coats. My mega-ugly cold jacket is the Mountain Hardware Absolute Zero model, which, as it is a torso furnace, isn't very handy in and out around the city. Now that I have it, the Marmot Shadow becomes my travel jacket of choice to Montana high country in early spring and late fall. Just a well made and intelligently designed coat. It can cover a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions with its features.

Too bad BackCountry has run out of the Shadow in most sizes and colors.
