A giant in the outdoors universe.

The Marmot Men's Red Star Jacket shines in snowy, frigid alpine environments whether you're climbing up or skiing down. This thin, light three-layer shell features a Nanopro membrane for reliable waterproof breathable protection, and fully taped seams enhance waterproofing to prevent a single snowflake from seeping through. Marmot's exclusive Angel-Wing Movement makes sure you can swing axes and plant poles without this jacket holding you back.

Marmot equipped the Red Star Jacket with PitZips underarm ventilation for sufficient airflow when you work up a sweat. The hood has multiple adjustments and a laminated brim that stays out of sight when you're belaying. There are more adjustments at the hem and each cuff to keep snow out. Marmot added long zippered front pockets and an internal pocket to secure your essentials.

    Great jacket, but defective zipper

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

Right when I received the jacket, I noticed one of the teeth of the zipper was broken off. After zipping it up and down a few times, the zipper was sticking in locations other than the broken tooth area. Seems like a great jacket, but with a defective zipper, can't say it's worth too much to me, Ill be returning it

    Solid rain gear

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I think this will be a great rain jacket for warmer weather, and a good all-around windbreaker type shell. It's very light weight and so I won't use it on really chilly days in the mountains, but for 3 season use I think it'll be my go-to rain jacket. Have not had it in a deluge yet, but perfectly dry during light rains these past few weeks. Nice addition to have an inside pocket, something missing from a lot of laminated rain gear these days. Pockets are nice and high, above a pack belt, and underarm zips seem done right. Fit is slightly on the fitted/trim side, I bought a medium (5-10, 150 lbs) and can use it with one fleece layer, but it would not fit well over a puffy. Sleeves slightly longer than "normal", but I think that's a good idea for real rainwear, to keep water from running into gloves, let you tuck your hands up in the sleeves, etc. No regrets, I'm keeping it.
    Cons:
    1. Wish it had a rollup fastener for the hood, I hate jackets that have the hood as a water bucket behind your head!
    2. Since this is a very "thin" and packable jacket, would have been nice to provide a little pouch / stuff sack for it, like my older Marmot Gore-tex outerwear came with.
