Hope for immaculate skies, but be ready for the fifty-year storm.

It doesn't take long for menacing clouds to turn into powerful storms that leave you soaked and cold out on the trail. The Marmot Women's PreCip Pants may not be able to hold back storms, but they keep you dry and comfortable on a rainy afternoon. These lightweight pants weigh in at just half a pound so you'll hardly notice them in your backpack if you bring them along on your day hike or backpacking trip. Or if it's pouring before you even hit the trail, don these protective pants from the get-go. The PreCip is 43% more breathable than last year, while offering solid, 10K-rated waterproof protection.

The fully taped seams keep rain drops from sneaking through the cracks, and zippered pockets protect items inside. Adjust the drawcord on the elastic waist for a secure fit. When it's time to pull the pants on or off, open up the side ankle zippers and easily slide the pants over your hiking boots, or open up the ankle zippers when you need a little extra ventilation. If you run into dense, scratchy brush that's closing in on the trail, the pants' rugged nylon ripstop fabric is up for the challenge: it's made to resist wear-and-tear so it'll get you back to camp unscathed, and keep you going through many a wet excursion.

  • 10K NanoPro waterproof membrane with excellent breathability (17K)
  • NanoPro eco-friendly DWR finish
  • Fully-taped seams
  • Durable nylon ripstop face fabric
  • Regular fit
  • Elastic waist with drawcord
  • Ankle side zips with snaps at cuff
  • Two zippered front pockets and one back zippered pocket

Here's what others have to say...

Nice and dry

  • Familiarity:I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit:True to size
  • Height: 5'6"
    Weight: 128 lbs
    Size Purchased: S

Mom says: "When hiking in Scotland, the threat of rain is always there. I kept these rolled up in my daypack, and was very happy to have them on more than one occasion. I ordered a small (I’m 5’6”, 128 pounds) and felt like the fit was good. Plenty of room to get them on over my other pants and still be able to move. They aren’t stylish — waist is extremely high — but when the wind is blowing and the rain is coming down sideways you’ll be glad for any and all coverage."

Good fit (short legs), light pant

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

I am 5'2, 105 lbs and the XS small fit well (comfortable over base and hiking pant layers). The length is just long enough. Pant moves well / allows for bending / squatting. Ankle zip only but I prefer the weight savings. Have not tested in field yet.

Bring on the Rapids

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

Bought these to stay dry while rafting the Colorado River for a week, and they definitely did the trick (until a rapid sent water UP my pants legs, but that's not Marmot's fault!) I like that they're thin, so even in hot weather, they're comfortable. I bought Large to be able to wear them over hiking pants and boots, but I don't think a smaller size would have been long enough for my 36" legs. Definitely like the ankle side zips to slip them on over shoes without having to take anything off.

Durable and waterproof, a little frumpy

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I have used these pants while training with my dog in the mornings doing agility and cardio. I wear these when the field or trail is all wet, allowing me to kneel down with the dog and also to keep his muddy mess off my running pants. I also wore them as my outer waterproof layer when hiking Mt Rainier. They did great with the twiggy surroundings even when I fell several times. No rips.

I am 5'7" and 136 pounds. I have narrow hips, not much of a waist, and noodle thin legs. I ordered a size medium, which fits well. I usually wear a size 6 in Ann Taylor, J Crew, or GAP so I feel I have to upsize with all Marmot clothes. My only complaint is that the hip rise is a little high so that I kind of feel like I have on Urkle pants but then the inseam could use another inch or so to give more coverage when I bend my knees. I still prefer them to any of the others I have tried. One star off for high hip rise and loss of coverage at ankle.

totally agree about the high waist, too short inseam. Used for biking and eventually wore off the coating on the inside of the pants in a few parts.

Let the rain fall....

Don't leave home without your rain pants. The Marmot Precip pants are lightweight, easy to pack, breathable and will keep you dry. I am very tough on gear and these pants are built to last. Whatever trail obstacles lay ahead in the backcountry, the precip's take on with ease. They fit true to size. Equipped with ankle side zips and a drawstring waistband, a customizable fit is a cinch. Most importantly the precip's keep you dry. Excellent product at a reasonable price point. Bring on the rain!
