Spending days at a time in the mountains almost guarantees stray thunderstorms and you don’t want to spend most of your trip soaked to the bone. The Marmot Men’s PreCip Pant provides high quality protection at an affordable price. Fully taped seams support the waterproof and breathable PreCip shell to ensure that you stay dry. Marmot added 2 zip hand pockets and one rear so you can easily access snacks or other small items in a storm without exposing your core.

Bottom Line: Don’t let a thunderstorm catch you with no pants.

PreCip Blowout

By:
February 5, 2007

The Marmot PreCip pants seem to get a lot of very favorable press. I purchased both the pants and the jacket, for my primary rain gear and as an insulating base-layer (if required). My initial experience with the pants was not favorable. Although the pants are lightweight, and pack nicely - I'm not convinced that my hiking style and build is ideally suited for the construction and fabric choice used for the pants. After hiking about 20 miles (in rain), I had an actual 'blow-out' in the crotch-area of the pants. Both the coating and the fabric had worn through. The good news was this site stands behind their customers and provided me with a very fast replacement. I have not put the replacement pair through its paces yet - but am currently wearing a slightly heavier and more robust 'Columbia' pair.

So- does the sizing take into account that you wear them over a layer? are they cut a little larger? I have a 33" waist and not sure if medium works for me

Sizing charts are based off your body measurements..so if you want to layer out under these I would take a measurement wearing that item..that will give you a better idea as to what is going to work for you.

inexpensive, waterproof, durable

By:
June 27, 2010

these pants are one of the better investments i've made. they're some of the cheapest rain/wind pants i've found, but they're super durable, and do exactly what they're intended for, keeping you dry. i've put them through multiple trips including bushwhacking for two weeks in the yukon and several years of skiing.

through all this the only damage they've gotten is a little scuffing around the knees, and a small tear in the butt. for $70, i'm amazed at how well they've held up.

my one complaint is they're not the most breathable pants ever, they tend to start clinging to my legs when i start sweating. they also have a weird habit of almost stretching out when they get damp. almost every time i wear them backpacking they start out fairly slim in the morning, and end up looking like snowboarding pants by the time i reach the next camp. for these two reasons i knocked them down to four stars.

despite this, i still think they're some of the best pants you'll get for your money. they've never leaked a drop on me and they're some of the toughest pants i've worn. i would definitely recommend them to anyone.

They took up nearly no space in my pack. They are very, very durable. There were many times I'd fall on my ass, scrape against rocks, cake them in mud, walk through 4-5 days of rain. They are good to go for the long haul. They were decent at blocking wind, were great for surviving driving rains, and kept me warm when completely soaked. They did everything they said they did so I gave them 5 stars.

Not Durable Enough

By:
February 25, 2008

I brought these pants with me to Patagonia and they soaked through, after an hour or so in the rain and left me cold. The zippers are not protected in any way and the seems are not sealed very well. Also, do not buy these for any serious hiking or outdoor activity, they simply are not thick enough. They may be good for city wear. Very light however.

I'll agree, mine did wet out after about two hours in moderate rain, however, I wore these on a winter mountaineering trip and they look the same now as they did before we left.

Great pants for the money. If you are on a budget and just getting into mountaineering, get some REI brand softshell pants and these rain shell pants. Both will surprise you with their performance.
I finally trashed mine, after 5 years of heavy abuse. I couldn't be happier with them.

They have a short zipper at the ankle, which is long enough to pull on the pants when you are wearing boots. Check out the Precip Full Zip pant if you are looking for a separating side zip pant.

I tried these on a recent snow day here at the eastern base of the Sierra. They slipped on easily over my pants, kept the snow off and worked as intended. A little tough to get my legs out while leaving my shoes on, but what do you expect, right? Good stuff from Marmot.

Not sure....

By:
May 4, 2011

There are two reason why I give these pants two stars.

First, the interior of the pants isn't very comfortable against skin. I don't see a reason to lug boxers into the wilderness, and the "tackiness" of the inside of the pants created a lot of discomfort for me. Thankfully I always have extra socks....

Second, they aren't "waterproof." To be fair, we were in 30 mph winds and received about an inch of rain during one day of our hike, but I was soaked through these pants in less than an hour in these conditions. Due to one of our members injuring herself, we had to take the last several miles very slowly. By the end of the day, I very cold and very wet.

These pants are probably okay if you aren't expecting any type of severe weather, but I wouldn't recommend buying them if you want to stay dry when it really counts.

I got these rain paints as a gift for my birthday. I also got the Atomic DT Jacket. They work great as a set, and I stayed dry inside and out. I used them on my last trip to the Black Forest of Pa. It rained 2 out of the 4 1/2 days of our trip. I never had breathable paints before and was amazed how well they work. They also pack down to almost nothing, and weigh even less then my flip flops. I like the paints, and really love the jacket. Thanks Mom!

Marmot PreCip Pants

By:
July 24, 2007

I am a 38 year old window cleaner who
power washes residential properties. I
have been wearing Precip pants for 4-5
years. My first pair saw approx. 300
days of hard use, climbing ladders and
rooflines. They are still in use, as I
gave them to a young co-worker. Acid
stains and all, they are still service-
able. My new pair will see double-duty
as early season duck hunting pants, as
Minnesota in October, gets warmer and
GREENER every year! Wash and dry these
PreCip products as instructed. Keep them
clean in between uses, and they'll pay
for themselves over and over.

Plan to get wet with these pants

By:
March 5, 2009

Did a little test...15 minutes in a driving rain on the southern Oregon coast and I was soaked through to my silk undergarments...

Put on my Roffe pants and lasted 60 minutes before getting wet, but not near as wet...

Not a bargain and do not recommend these pants if you want to stay dry...

Long lasting wetness protection

By:
January 29, 2009

Okay, that title sounds like a tampon commercial. Great pants, easy to slip on and off, good crotch cut for walking. Very little chafing, not too much swish swishing when walking. What can I say... good rain pants, kept me dry in a deluge and in wet sloppy snow. PreCip is great material, very much like TNF's HyVent. Ideally I'd like Gore-Tex but my bank account kept me from having my druthers.

Pre-cip better than most but not all

By:
November 21, 2009

For the money, Pre cip performs well. I wanted something that would not cost over $100. Waited for sale and Im happy with pants. I have the jacket and it does well also. Lightweight, keeps you dry, and semi-low cost. Could breath better, overall good basic raingear.

Keeps The Bottom Half Dry

By:
November 15, 2007

Great companion to the Precip jacket, even colored coordinated, if that's your thing. Keeps rain off pants & bottoms dry. Boots need to be removed to put pants on, where the full-zip version eliminates that step. Lightweight & small enough to stash, along with the jacket, in a small outer pocket. I don't go backpacking without them.

Preformed as advertised...

By:
May 31, 2007

These pants aren’t nearly as exciting as new skis or a cool back pack, but they're a vast improvement over my old plastic pants. They are light weight, comfortable, and very packable. I wish the pockets were a little deeper and the zippers on the legs were a little longer. Longer leg zippers would ease getting them on and off while paddling a canoe. Potential buyers should also be aware that these pants are not insulated. Again, there’s nothing very exciting about rain gear, but Marmot PreCip is quality stuff for a decent price.

Scotland in the Marmot Precip Pants

By:
June 13, 2007

8 days on the West Highland Way in late May/early June of 2007 and the Marmot Precip Pants functioned admirably. The only drawback was getting them on and off with my hiking shoes on. If Marmot would install a longer side-zip, I would be more than happy with the product.

I took these on a rainy hiking trip and they performed great. I were a 32" waist and 33" or 34" inseam in most pants and large long fit me great. They were long enough to keep mud out of my boots and keep my socks dry. They are also very light and very packable. When I came home from the hike I had my brother order a pair for himself.

PreCip Pant

By:
February 12, 2009

Purchased 2nd set of PreCip to fit over Goose Down. If there's a better rain suit out there for the price I'd like to hear about it. The new style incorporates front pockets and bottom cuff that can be worn as a normal leg opening or pulled in by elastic cord. I really liked both features.
The only negative that I have noticed is the zippers are too small, seems to jam too often. This problem will be found in the Jacket as well.

By:
February 2, 2009

I bought these on sale for $56.00 bucks and they are great! Durable and light they work great in the 3 season weather. I hike the Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas and never had a prob with them. For mountaineering though I would use something thicker and more durable. These are just a nice lightweight rain shell.

These pants are great

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
May 29, 2007

These pants do a great job of keeping water out. Not only are they good for rain storms, they are also great for keeping water from morning condensation in brush from running into boots. The fabric on these is quit durable and in many miles of use through tundra and bushwhacking I have yet to tear them. I am sure I could destroy these if I tried but what's the point in that. I would highly recommend these pants as they are super light and well worth having. My only complaint would be that they could be a bit roomier as they are a little bit restrictive if using an extended stride.
