  • Underarm vents circulate air to keep you cool
  • DriClime chin guard adds a soft layer behind the zipper at the face to prevent chin chafing

Here's what others have to say...

What is the center back length of a medium?

Never got to try it out

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

So I ordered a large based on the sizing chart. That was a huge mistake. I'm 5'5", 135lbs, and probably could've bought a small. I'm usually a medium in jackets, sometimes small, but I guess I thought I should have room for another layer underneath, so large it was. I swam in this jacket. The upper sleeves are extra big- this is to help with movement, but I found it awkward. The jacket seemed to be an upside- down triangle shape overall.
Also, the material was loud. I may have traded it in for a smaller size but they were all out. Yay, I got to spend $7 just to try on the wrong size! :(

Hey Deanna,

I'm so sorry you didn't get to really use this jacket! For future reference, Marmot product runs very true to size, so go ahead and order your normal size. For you, I'd get the small, and if you planned on pretty much always having a layer under it, a medium. Also, the new version of the precip is not quite as loud and crunchy. And if you are looking for a more shapely jacket, try the Minimalist - it's a bit more fitted.

Cheers~

Gets my rainy day vote!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This past week I've been getting a little more use out of this than I'd like since it's been rainy, but I'm not displeased by the jacket at all! In our rainy weather, I've grabbed this as a water barrier for dog walks and stayed dry! it's super light, so I thought it might soak through, but it's stayed pretty bomber for me so far! Way to go Marmot! I'd say the sizing chart is pretty spot on, I went with a medium (being 5'7" around 140) and I have enough room for a hoodie underneath if I feel the need.

My wife's go-to jacket

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift
  • Fit: True to size

My wife loves this jacket - in fact, this order was a replacement for one that she tore a hole in the arm during our last hike. The product is durable - but didn't fully survive the slide down a trail we were traversing down in the snow when she fell and slid on a rock.

The jacket is awesome - light, water repelling, and all around a great fit. She loves it, and needed a replacement (sans holes...)

Highly recommend - first Marmot equipment and I'm thoroughly impressed by its quality!

Great Rain Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've worn this jacket to work, golf, and out and about. I like the zippers under the arms. Helps to keep me cool when the hot flashes hit. I wear a medium(I am 5'7" and weigh 144lbs) and was able to have a sweater on under the jacket. It is very light weight and easy to pack in my golf bag.

Great Light Weight Jacket for the Price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The PreCip is pretty light and folds into one of the inside pockets and packs down pretty small. I have attached it to a carabiner before and hooked it to my belt loop or bag to bring it with me "just in case" it rains. It breathes pretty well and their is plenty of room to layer under it.

I have used it everywhere, hiking, biking, camping, around town, at festivals and it always keeps me dry. Pretty easy to clean off when it gets dirty. I bought on sale so for the price the jacket is awesome!

good all around shell

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've owned this jacket for the past year and have worn it frequently across all 4 seasons. Ive worn it while biking, hiking, commuting, running, and snowboarding. I love the underarm vents for hiking, biking and running, use them all the time. Its lightweight and easy to stuff into a bag. I also find it fits true to size and easy to layer under. I wear a small top in everything and am able to fit multiple layers under a small precip, I didn't need to size up.

Commuting/running/hiking in the wet weather, including snow, its been a solid outer layer, wasn't terrible as an outer layer while boarding, but wouldn't be my first choice in this case.

Nice Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I got this to use as a rain jacket and windbreaker while hiking in the warmer months but I find myself wearing it year round as a shell over a sweater or fleece in the winter. I love the pit zips and the hood is roomy enough to fit over a bulky hat. I still wear my Burley rain coat when I ride my bike because it's longer, but this is a staple for every other activity I do outdoors. I volunteer walking dogs at the shelter and this is great for resisting muddy paws as well. I haven't been in an utter downpour in it, but average rain has been fine.

As far as size I'm between a L and XL. I ordered this in a L and it's perfect in the warmer months, but if I knew I'd be wearing it as an outer layer I might have gotten an XL.

A great jacket for the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the second precip I own.... the other, (10 years old) is still waterproof and in use (for garden tasks) but terribly stained at the cuffs. I bought this to replace it.

Great lightweight jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

My husband and I have owned Marmot Precip jackets for years; they last well and do the job with comfort and style. When it is time to replace one of them, we seem to always pick a Marmot Precip jacket again.

I'm interested in this jacket but just...

I'm interested in this jacket but just tossed a Marmot rain suit that was shedding white flakes all over the inside. My husband's has done the same thing. Only worn 6 times, but have owned for a few years. Swore I would not buy Marmot again, but this one looks good. I'm 5/2 with narrow shoulders and waist, but would wear layers underneath. Is the lining white? Anybody know what's up with the flaking? XS
or S for me if I decide to buy it? Thanks, M

Responded on

I am sorry to hear about your experience with the rain suit and the white flaking. I have never heard of that problem before with any Marmot product. But I can vouch for Marmot as a brand and for the Precip in particular. I have worn this jacket on numerous occasions and it has always been an excellent waterproof rain jacket. Light, trim fitting, and comfortable to wear. If I was looking for a solid affordable rain jacket I wouldn't look any further than the Marmot Precip or the Patagonia Torrentshell. I have used both.

Mary,
I'm not able to positively diagnose the flaking from the inside of the jacket without seeing it, but the likelihood is that it is a spray on lining on the inside of your older jackets which does wear out over time. You can wash your jacket and rewaterproof it with Nikwax if you'd like to extend the life of the jacket. http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-tech-wash-txd-wash-in-twin-pack?ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6bmlrd2F4OjE6NjpuaWt3YXg

Something to note is that the Marmot PreCip jacket is a 2.5 layer garment so the spray-in liner may still wear out over a few years as well. A 3-layer jacket or GoreTex membrane will be more durable and provide more consistent waterproofnes. It's challenging to provide exact recommendations for your sizing without more information about your dimensions. Check out the sizing chart on this page, below the listed sizes for more details.

Thanks, Michael and Micah - very helpful. Also wondering if this precip jacket makes that crinkly noise.

Responded on

My PreCip started to flake a bit around the seams as well after a year or so of use in a rainy climate. Also, it was crinkly at first but after being worn in the rain once or twice it stopped :)

I bought this for biking in the cold and it has been a key item in my fall wardrobe. Cuts the wind and keeps me warm!

Perfect Wind Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I purchased this jacket for hiking and bicycling. It is light, easy to pack and adds almost no weight to my pack. Its perfect for a summer rain or wind while on a hike or walk. I was caught in a thunder shower during a late summer hike and the jacket repelled water for the duration of the rain which was approx. 15 minutes.
The jacket comes with arm hole vents which is a nice feature. I wear an XL and this jacket is true to size and is cut to allow room for layering.

Excellent jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Repels the rain, nice feminine cut, good range of motion, and packs small and tight. If you need a lightweight, waterproof jacket this is your winner. If you want to layer underneath you may want to size up (as you would with any jacket).

I'm 5'3 petite (115) and would want to wear a fleece layer under this, should I go with the small or my typical size (xs)?

Responded on

Hey ckmac,
If you normally wear an XS, the Small will still fit you in this jacket and allow you to wear layers underneath.

Good fit for layering.

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift
  • Fit: True to size

I ordered this for my daughter. She is about 5'6 and slim. We ordered size "Small". She said it was fitted enough to not look like she was wearing her husband's jacket, but still had enough room to put a layer underneath for cooler weather.

Fit was not what I had hoped for

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I have been wearing a men's Small PreCip for about 10 years and it was not waterproof anymore. When I got the women's Medium, it was about 1" shorter, the sleeves were tighter, and I did not have the same range of motion - when I lifted my arms, the jacket rode up much more than the mens' Small. I didn't want to compromise on the fit, so I returned the women's Medium and got a men's Small.

Can this jacket stuff into its own pocket,...

Can this jacket stuff into its own pocket, similar to the Patagonia Torrentshell? I'm looking for something I can clip onto a carabiner.

Best Answer Responded on

The PreClip Jacket packs into it's own left hand pocket. If you look inside you will see a tab loop, as well as, an internal/external zipper. Stuff the jacket into the pocket zip it up and utilize the tab loop to hook into your carabiner.

Lovely fit, not rain tested yet

  • Gender: Female
  • Fit: True to size

I ordered the dark pewter (a very nice neutral color and a good choice if you're tired of black)size medium. I am only 5'3" but curvy in the hips and bust, with very narrow shoulders. The sleeves are a bit long, but otherwise it fits well and is flattering, not boxy. The outlet price was great and I purchased it specifically for a cruise I'll be taking to New Zealand/Australia in late December, however, I think it will be perfect for the rainy season in Northern CA as well. In short, I haven't rain tested it yet but will give it a try as soon as we get our first rains and my dogs are barking to go out.

I am updating this review as we had our first downpour of the season yesterday. It was coming down in buckets when my two dogs needed to go out. Put on the Precip, adjusted the hood around my head and it was perfect. Kept my face and glasses dry as well as my torso and arms. I used to walk the dogs and carry an umbrella in the rain. No fun at all. Now, perhaps they can make a canine Precip :)
