Lovely Rain Jacket
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
- Fit:True to size
- Size Bought: Large
Very light, breathable, great range of motion. Cuts wind nicely. Big enough to cover me without being baggy. Haven't yet subjected it to a deluge but has held up nicely in steady rain. Also like how hood stows away.

I haven't been in heavy rain while wearing this jacket, so all I can say is, "so good, so far." I like how the hood rolls up into the collar and stays there when not needed. The mesh pockets are "okay," although I wish they were solid material. So far, no problems with keys snagging, but I can see the possibility of it happening. (Although it appears that the images have changed since I purchased this, what I thought were pockets on the inside were actually the regular side pockets. I was disappointed with that.) The "fabric" is extremely lightweight and makes a noticeable noise when moving. Also, there's not much room underneath for another layer -- a T-shirt and my regular shirt is about all there is room for. (I have a 34" waist and purchased a medium jacket.) Even on sale, I think the price is too steep.
Great Piece of Gear

I keep this with me at all times, regardless if I'm on the trail or not, it hangs in my car just in case of rain. It's been great in light rain scenarios, I haven't had the chance to test it in a heavy rain. Folds up nice into it's own pocket, don't store it there though! And the hood is incredibly adjustable and overall I've found it pretty breathable!
"Waterproof"??? Not for me.

I've had this shell for about six weeks now. I've mostly packed it around in my small pack as a lightweight emergency shell... though I have worn in in a few light rain storms to test waterproofness. Seemed to do OK for the short, light rains that it was exposed to. The inside seemed to build-up moisture though, so breathability was in question. Last night I took it (and the matching Precip pants) out for a 1-mile dog walk in a heavy, steady rain. The jacket was totally wetted-out by the time I returned home. I was quite disappointed. I wouldn't expect it to be as water-proof as a full-on rain slicker or similar "tarp". But didn't expect it to be wetted-out that badly. I could feel it wetting-out halfway through the walk. At any rate, I'll still pack it around on mountain bike rides and short hikes for a lightweight "emergency" shell that I don't have to worry-out losing or tearing. But on trips farther-out in the backcountry or up in the mountains, where staying dry can be life or death... I pack my Arc'Teryx Alpha FL. You do get what you pay for.
Durable. Has lasted many years for me.

I've worn this jacket so many times that I am surprised it still looks new. It is not a very lightweight jacket which is perfect if you wear it as a shell over a down jacket to keep you extra warm in winter. If you wear it during warmer weather rain like the Arizona monsoon season you will get really really hot and even condensation will build up inside! It does have zippers under the armpits for extra venting which is a nice touch. I love how it stows in its own pocket. Its not as compact. I've used it as a pillow on numerous occasions. Its durable and will last you many years like mine has. As far as sizing, it does run a little large. Perfect for wearing layers underneath but baggy if you're just wearing a t-shirt underneath. The hood is also removable.
Good entry level all around jacket
Very light. Waterproof. Breathes well. I like the collar being separate from the hood piece. Packs great and is durable for most average uses. The inside is not as tacky/sticky/clammy as some others I have worn though I personally do not like wearing it against my bare skin. True to size. For the price, a great all around jacket!
Very good entry level jacket
It is very light

Received my Marmot Precip jacket today. Bought the Dark Crimson. Color is a little darker red/brown than I was expecting but overall really like the color. Fit is perfect, sleeves are just right at the cuffs, resting at the base of my wrists. Pockets have a nice mesh lining and pit zips will be nice for ventilation on wet, warm days this spring/summer. The jacket has its own collar that is separate from the hood. Jacket seems like it's crafted very well! Looking forward to putting it to use with the next good rain! Great Job Marmot!!

Great rain shell. You just can't get any better rain jacket for the price.
So much better than the old one

Incredibly waterproof. I bike commute in the pouring rain with this all the time. Love the bright colors when commuting at night as well. Isn't as comfy as my REI waterproof softshell but it's cheap and light, insanely packable and super waterproof.
Great jacket ... so far

I purchased this jacket because I have a different Marmot jacket that I use as a windstopper but needed soemthing for the rain as well.
Love the fit, the weight, the hood that rolls into the collar and the zippered arm pit ventilation. I am 6' 1+" and 175 pounds. The large fits perfectly even with a fuzzy fleece top underneath.
I haven't yet had a good rain to test out its water repellent characteristics, but the few drizzles have kept me perfectly dry. I will update this review after some more experience.
Great for what I needed

After a lot of comparing between this jacket and a few others in the same price range, I decided to go ahead and get the Precip from Marmot.
I'm a female and my stats are listed below. I've always enjoyed the looser fit I get with men's jackets compared to womens. Especially with the diameter of the arm holes. I can wear sweatshirts and not have the sleeves ride up or become tight when I put on my jacket.
I've been reading all sorts of reviews for this jacket and realized that my needs are beyond met with this one. I'm not a hiker nor do I find myself exposed to rain and wet conditions for more than an hour or two at the most. I got this for waiting out at the bus stop when it rains, for walking in between classes, and short walks in case I get caught in a rain storm.
I've been missing a rain jacket in my collection for years because I never could justify buying one due to how little use it would get. There were a few times, though, that I found myself in need and decided to bite the bullet. At the price I got this at which was around 60, I'm very happy I bought it. I was surprised by how light it was. I ordered a medium because that's usually my size in men's jackets, and it fit as I hoped it would. Enough room to wear a sweatshirt underneath, and not too big to wear alone with a tshirt. I was worried my gut would get in the way with zipping it up but alas it was just fine lol.
TLDR: I'm happy with this. The fit is great for a girl too, even at my height and weight. If you're looking for a rain jacket for wearing in the city or in short exposures to rain, this will meet your needs. As will most jackets in this price range.
Near perfect, but a bit of a fit issue
- Familiarity:I've used it several times

- Size Bought: Large and XL
First off, I LOVE this jacket. It's lightweight, waterproof in the heaviest of downpours, and has plenty of great ventilation options. Perhaps my favorite feature is how the hood attaches to the shoulders, not to the collar. That let's you zip the collar all the way up for warmth, but without requiring you to pull the head up.
I was hoping for more out of the "Angel Wing" design. I'm 5'10'', 215 lbs, and i'm a personal fitness trainer with broad thick shoulders and wide lats. The Large fit me perfectly with room to layer underneath, but the second i reached my arms out in front of me, the jacket tightened like a straight jacket under my arms and across my upper back. I had to size up to the XL, which fits my chest, shoulders, and upper back, but is quite big on my torso. Oh well, just more room for layering now, I guess.
Works perfectly

This jacket loves the El Nino weather in Northern California; lightweight, easy to stash away, and easy to throw over a down jacket for extra warmth during colder rain.
Great Rain jacket

I bought this in a pinch because I needed a jacket and it was a great price. I was very pleased. Fit is nice, perfect for a rain coat where you have layers underneath. The only complaint I really have is it sounds like I am wearing a garbage bag when it is cold. This jacket lived up to the Precip hype.
I stayed real dry

I recently bought the Marmot Precip Jacket and I love it. I'm 5'9" and 155 lbs and I purchased a medium and it fits great. It's small enough to wear alone with a t-shirt, but roomy enough to layer up underneath. I just left Sam's Throne in North Arkansas where it rained/sleeted/snowed the three days we were there. I wore a base layer, a North Face Fleece, and a North Face Thermoball Hooded Jacket and had plenty of room left in the Precip Jacket. It allowed me to have a lot of movement and it kept me dry and warm throughout all the different types of precipitation. I would definitely recommend this jacket to someone else.
Great Gear

Love this Rain jacket. Does what it is supposed to do, keep you dry. Breaths better than I was expecting it to. Fits great!! I love the tall collar separate from the hood. Thats why i chose this one over others. More and more jackets are coming with the Collar attache to the hood, Helmet compatible I suppose. Either way, really wish i could find an insulated winter coat that fit like this!! I am happy with the purchase. Fits good, looks good, functions good.
Perfect wind/rain jacket

Got one of these jackets for myself and for my dad for christmas, and couldn't be happier with them. Im 5'11, 170lbs and the medium fits me perfect. Not too big and not too tight, I would recommend this product!
Exactly what I wanted

Fits to size. Keeps me bone dry in the rain. Vents well with the underarm pit. Tucks away into it's own pocket small enough to cram in a nalgene bottle.
Also use it over a sweater to keep the wind out. I really like the stowable hood, and with it cinched down it follows my head when I turn my neck. Fantastic jacket for the price.

So far I really like this jacket. The fit was perfect. My favorite feature is the pit zips. As a guy who runs hot they are a must. Backpacking this past weekend in a light rain storm I stayed completely dry. Added bonus it stores completely in one of the pockets which is great for size restrictions. Overall awesome jacket, I highly recommend.
Can this jacket stuff into it self?
I ordered a (Medium) Alpinist Tech Fleece to go under this. Will a medium size Precip Jacket go over my fleece or should I go a size larger?
A medium Precip will fit over your Alpinist Tech. I have a large Precip and I've worn much bulkier insulation (also size large) under it before.
Do they make it in 4x
The largest made is XXXL and Tall.
I am looking to pick this jacket up but and stuck on whether to get a Large or an XLarge. I am 6'5" and about 210 lbs. I recently picked up an Eddie Bauer Travex jacket and it fits perfectly as a size Large. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
I am 6'2" and 220 and the XL fits me perfectly. The sleeves are long enough (which is very hard for me to find) and the overall length of the jacket sits right around the middle of the back pockets of my pants. Hope this helped.
Id go with the XL. I'm 5'7, 160 and wanted a shell to go over all my winter layers, puffy, etc. I'd had a few experiences buying mediums (other brands) and having them fit but not with a lot of extra room. I was going for super roomy. So I bought a Large. I definitely got roomy, but it's not ridiculous. I do not look like I'm swimming in it or anything, and you're a lot bigger than me, so yeah, XL.
Hello, I'm 170 cm tall, which should be 5'7'', and weigh about 67 kg or 150lbs, would medium be the right size for me? Thanks
Hello Berni,
I bought a medium size, fits just right for me (shirt+marmot precip jacket). For build comparison i stand 5'10", and weighs 69kg.
Looking for a super lightweight rain jacket i can wear in the summers in the south. Is this a good option as I have many other jackets for colder days.
This is the perfect jacket for you! It's a great price with unmatched waterproof and breathability features.
My son is going to college in Pittsburgh. We just bought the Patagonia Down Sweater jacket for the winter, but was curios about a good rain jacket for layering? We are from Fl and barely own a coat! I would sincerely appreciate any help you could lend as the climate and weather is going to be a big adjustment!
The Precip is a fantastic option for an affordable and durable jacket for wet weather. This would also fit over the down sweater great on wet days (which there are plenty in Pitt). A nice fleece under the Precip would be good in the spring/fall as well. If you are interested in a Gore option, the Minimalist is a great option as well. Good luck!
What is the center back length of a medium?
30 inches
I am 6', 220, 42 waist. Normally, I'd order this in an XL but, since I might be wearing a vest or a light down jacket (Patagonia Nanopuff) underneath in cold weather, I'm thinking that an XXL might be better.
Thoughts?
I'd just go with XL. I'm 6'4", 220#, 36" waist, and often wear my XL with a fleece or NanoPuff underneath. That 42"waist might be a little light, but I'm afraid if you go to XXK the thing will hang down around your knees and the sleeves will drag on the ground. Just my 2¢... Have fun!
Obviously this too late for yourDisplayName, but for anyone who comes later, I am 6'2, 260, 40 inch waist and my XXL fits well.
I have a 2006 PreCip jacket that had finally worn out. Are the newer models cut any different than the older ones. My old one is baggy in the underarm and sleeves. I was thinking about down sizing unless the new jackets have a slimmer fit.
Hey Elvin,
The cut should be about the same. Style has stayed pretty consistent with this jacket but what they have done is made the jacket more breathable.
Heading for a late season hike in the Beartooth Mtns. I feel good about the jacket, a little worried about the size. I'm about 6'3" 215 and am hoping for a snug fit. Run anywhere between a L and XL ... suggestions?
Since your legs attribute a lot to your height and mass but have nothing to do with how the jacket will fit it would be much more helpful if we could get your chest measurement and sleeve length to determine between two sizes.
If you could get those measurements for us you could either compare against the recommended size chart or give one of our Gearheads a call and they would be happy to help you out.
I'm about your size- wear a 34" inseam pant, 17/36 shirts and 46 long jackets. XL fits me great, with room for a fleece or something underneath. Hope this helps.
Sure does! Thanks for the insight and the additional info.
Is this jacket windproof?
Is this jacket windproof?
While not 100% windproof (it has to breathe), this jacket will stop most winds.
How does this model compare to the Marmot...
How does this model compare to the Marmot Minimalist? Major differences?
Blake,
The big difference is material. The Minimalist is of Gore-tex Paclite and Precip is a proprietary material NanoPro and of course the extra chest pocket on the Minimalist. Both are very breathable and I feel the Minimalist will have a little longer life. I've been rock'n the Precip models since their first introduction and love the weight, waterproof, breath-ability and of course the budget price of less that a 100 bucks. I'm hard on jackets going through them in a couple or so years. I've used the Precip from Mt. Rainier attempts to the rainy Pacific Northwest Olympic peninsula, while cycling and an awesome spring shell for Backcountry skiing. It's never failed me and I absolutely never leave it or the Precip Full Zip pants out of my day pack or expedition pack.
Hope you enjoy!
