The Precip Jacket, a great windbreaker, a poor rain jacket.

I had had this jacket for over a year now and feel comfortable in saying that this jacket is a fail. It is light and quite inexpensive. It packs well and fits well. It. Locks the wind quite well also. Unfortunately it stopped blocking the rain long ago. After my first backpacking trip, it now quickly absorbs water into where the pack was riding. After maybe 10 wears over six monthes, this jacket is less water resistant than my windstopper pieces. Not a durable jacket at all. Paid less, got less. Would not recommend.

I love the marmot jacket because it keeps water off you (when you don't have an umbrella), lightweight to pack, very lightweight and doesn't take up much room when packing for travel/backpacking. The only thing that I have had a problem with is the pull strings for the hood just loosen on their own so the you have to tie it awkwardly or hold the strings in windy conditions. That being said, I've taken this jacket all over the world, on land and sea, and it has been great overall.
Great Jacket

Water-resistant in light, rain, sprinkle; not waterproof. Water came through the shoulders after 20-minutes in the rain.
A nice-looking wind-breaker.
I am 6'2". The extra-large fits me fine with room for layering underneath.

Just received the Marmot Precip Jacket today in Cayenne color. For the price, jacket is very lightweight. Nice, large hood and pockets. Cayenne color is brighter orange in person than in the pictures. Still a great color though.

HI.
And what is about difference in waterresistance between Marmot Precip and Patagonia Torrentshell?
Arthur Debowski
Member since
They are very similar in that they are both fully seam sealed lightweight rain shells.

Totally agree with Arthur. They are basically the same jacket from different manufactures.

But as I see here are more negative reviews than among Torrentshell's reviews.
Great Looking, but HOT.

Great product. Wore once so far in light rain and worked well. But doesn't breath well and is a bit warm and muggy on the inside. Even with pit zippers open.

I have had this jacket now for about 3 years and love it. I accidentally sent it into Marmot for a zipper repair thinking it had broken. Marmot was very kind and responsive and informed me that I had simply not zipped up the zipper when I washed it. Nothing was broken. They returned it promptly. Great customer service. It keeps water out completely, even in heavy rain. The material looks quite wet but the layer under is completely dry. The pocket configuration isn't my favorite but it works. I am 6' and 190 lbs and the large fits well but roomy for layering purposes. The cuffs allow hook-and-loop closure to the degree you wish for proper fit to the inner layers and wrist. Marmot rocks! Great price, great design, great jacket.

this jacket is very breathable and durable, it serves as a great windbreaker and rain jacket in hotter conditions and is warm in cooler conditions. The price is very good considering the features of the jacket.
Is this the Marmot product # 5491?

There's not a whole lot of bad to say about the precip. I purchased mine in 08, since then it's been on every outing I've ever been on. It's done everything from caving to skiing to multiweek treks in New Mexico. Mine is starting to wear through on the cuffs and shoulders, but still keeps me dry. Packs down tiny and works well. The new Precip is even better! Couldn't be any happpier
Wear if for everything in the rain!

I've worn this fly fishing in the rain. Camping in the rain. Hiking in the rain. I wear it to work if it's raining. I carry it to work if it's supposed to rain.
EXTREMELY light weight. Wads up in to a tiny ball. Even fits in my lunch box!
Excellent until temps top 70

Super light, windproof and packable, and has kept me dry in major rain with and without a pack. Breathable until temperature exceeded 65-70 degrees. Admittedly, I perspire heavily; but jacket was soaked inside once I started sweating with only a t-shirt on underneath. Dried quickly. Recommend at price.

I used this all summer day hiking in yellowstone and other national parks and had a chance to use it is several storms and will it feels wet it does keep you dry. Packes nicely into one of the pockets and fits nicely in a day pack. Haven't used it in the winter snow but thats not really what its for. I have a large long and am 6'2" 170lbs.
Decent, but There are better Options

This is a decent sub $100 Light rain coat, but it's not that breathable and can soak through after a while. There are better options in the same price range (I'd recommend the north face venture Jacket).
