You can’t predict the weather, but thanks to the waterproof breathable Marmot Men’s Oracle Pant, you can be fully prepared for whatever it brings. The stretch PreCip shell fabric and fully taped seams seal out moisture when the storms roll in, and reinforcements on the seat and knees improve durability. Marmot also added adjustable suspenders for a perfect fit and Cordura cuffs to stand up to ski edges and crampon points.

Bottom Line: Come prepared for a stormy future.

You basically have two options here, a hardshell like these with a plastic waterproof breathable laminate affixed to the fabric, or a softshell with a high level of breathability plus great water and abrasion resistance, but no true waterproofing.

With hardhshells, it is the unfortunate reality that you get what you pay for. For super deep, wet snow, this is probably your best bet, and you should get the nicest pants you can afford. The Precip laminate on these is the bottom rung of the ladder, Membrain strata is better, and Gore Tex a step above that. From Marmot, I'd recommend the Tamarack or the Minimalist. If you can afford it, go one more step up for their Randonnee. With hardshell pants, Inseam venting is important, and I'd also avoid anything with its own insulation, for more versatility.

If the snow is dry and it will be very cold, A softshell will bead any potential water droplets while being MUCH more breathable and comfortable. Think cotton t-shirt vs trash bag (hyperbole of course but you get the point). I have Marmot's Scree, and they're incredible. The Patagonia Guide softshell are almost identical, and the OR Exum and the Stoic Tour are similar but slightly heavier weight.

I'd also have an insulating midlayer for wearing while hiking on hand, especially if it is going to be brutally cold. 100wt fleece should be sufficient, Marmot makes the Powerstretch and the Reactor, Mountain hardwear makes the Microchill.

Finally, I'd recommend a super warm pair of synthetic or puffy pants to put on over everything once you get into camp, stop moving and cool down. Mountain Hardwear has the Compressor, OR has the Neoplume, and Montbell makes a variety as well.

In total, that's four pairs, Baselayer, Fleece active insulating layer, Hardshell or Softshell outerwear, and a heavily insulated layer to put on over everything for in camp wear.

Best of luck and enjoy your trip!
Simon

Good option

I agree with Weathering the Lions, a nice rain pant for the $$. wore these in a six hour down pour; cold, vertical blowing rain on the AT in December. there was some leakage but only cuz I had neglected to close the zippered pocket. siszing is very good; I'm packing a few extra pounds these days and all of my Marmot gear has just the n'th extra amount of space so I dont have to buy the XXL.
I'm 5'11" and 245lbs. all in all a good option for a mid priced serviceable rain pant.

Weathering the Lions

For the money, these are a pretty tough pair of rain pants to beat. I had these out this weekend for 4 hours of steady rain while hiking the Lions outside of Vancouver. They were quick on, thanks to the full length side-zips, and the fit is very good -- no ultra baggy rain pant fit. No water intrusion in hours of steady downpour, and the even with the steady hiking, the pants breathed well enough to avoid condensation issues. The suspenders aren't perfect and they can slow you down a bit while trying to pull them on quickly, but they work pretty well and they are removable if you don't think so. After all the mud, once they were dry I could hardly tell they had been out. The kick patches are another nice feature.
FYI these pants don't use Precip tech, which is a coating, not a laminate. They use Marmot's new Membrain Strata 2.5 layer LAMINATE, and it breathes a ton better than Precip, if not quite to GORE Paclite levels.

Anyhow, great pair of pants. Happy hiker. Money to spare.

Would these pants be suitable for alpine climbing (ie durable enough for glissades, etc) or should these stay on the trail?

If you size them large enough, you could even wear them over a second pair of Oracle Pants.
