The warmest of warm

By:
August 20, 2007

I live in NZ and have just spent five days skiing Cadrona in the South Island. I really feel the cold and with five layers of Ice Breaker and my Killy ski jacket I was miserable after two days. I purchased this jacket in a hurry (and was told that if it didn't keep me warm I should give up skiing!) and it was amazing. I was actually warm skiing for once and managed to get down to two under-layers. Highly recommended. I did upsize and have plenty of room for a jumper if need be.

super warm!

I bought this jacket to use for climbing this winter, and was never cold! Even when everyone else in the group was freezing. The hood adds an incredible amount of warmth and is removable. The only thing that I don't like, is that you cannot remove the powder skirt. It does zip from both top and bottom though, so I can wear it and belay easily.
I am 5'1", 115lbs and got a size S. It is a little big, but I can wear tons of layers under it, and my butt is always warm.

AMAZING!

By:

this jacket makes me speechless! it is so warm. I never had a puffy coat before this and I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT. It is so lightweight that I even take it camping with me during the summer for those cold mornings at high altitude. It's waterproof so you can ski with it too. I am a preschool teacher who spends a lot of time outside, so needless to say, it' super versatile!

Warm jacket, amazing fit

By:
January 16, 2008

I live in Alaska and walk my dogs every day, even when it's -25. I took them out in my new jacket this week at -20 with just a polypro shirt underneath and a pair of light snowpants. I was so warm I had to UNZIP the jacket!!!

The fit is also perfect for women. I hate the "marshmallow man" look in down jackets, but this one is tucked just a little at the waistline, which makes it surprisingly flattering. It's also longer than The North Face down jackets (which I owned before this one) so you won't get a sub-zero blast of air up your back if you bend over.

All in all, this is the best winter jacket I've ever owned, and I've lived in Alaska for 27 years.

Warm, Dry, Comfy and Stylish

By:

I bought this jacket for my girlfriend before the winter started. She is perpetually cold, and layering underneath a shell just wasn't cutting it. We get frequent mixed conditions (Sleet, Snow, Ice, Rain, and brutal cold) in the winter, and so always carrying a waterproof coat to replace a non-waterproof puffy coat would be annoying. I'm happy to report that she wears this coat every day, in barely freezing downpours and frigid snowy days, and absolutely loves it. She wears it skiing and has no issues with arm mobility or lower back becoming exposed, and the cut is trim enough to flatter without appearing overly puffy. The hood is very protective and eliminates the need for a neckwarmer. I wish my own puffy coat was as durable and waterproof as hers.

Buyer Beware

By:
February 5, 2008

I bought this for my girlfriend but she chose to exchange it for a different model - this was not warm enough for her. Also, the size chart was misleading: lean and with a 34" bust she is a S. We considered a M (for layering), but her sleeve length (measured from mid-back to where the sleeve should fall on her wrist)is 27-28" and this is far shorter than the 32-33" M sleeve (or even the 30-31" S)as listed in the chart. Marmot customer service confirmed that she is a "S". She received the S and found it tight(no room for another layer)and the sleeves too short.

I want matching pants ...

By:
October 23, 2007

I love my Mountain Down Jacket so much I want to marry it, however the laws of New Zealand prohibit me from doing so. I'm 5'8" and 65kg, so I went for a size small, which fits me well. It is a decent length unlike many I've tried on, and is the warmest jacket I've ever worn. The hood does up so tightly, even in gale force winds I'm toasty warm. Quality of construction is excellent; seems to have tonnes of fill and lofts more than any 650-fill jacket I've seen. Been caught in heavy rain several times and no leakage. Has a double front zip so you can unzip it a bit from the bottom when sitting down to stop it riding up. Makes me look like a supermodel. It arrived surprisingly quickly, perhaps it was sent on a recommissioned Concorde. One of my criteria was knowing the geese were not cruelly live-plucked, and according to Marmot, these geese weren't so that's great.

Things I would change if I could: two inside chest pockets instead of one so I don't look lopsided with everything stuffed in one side (not that you can tell, really, as it's nice and squishy). It has nice soft lining around the collar; this would be good around the cuffs too. A peak on the hood. But you can't have everything.

I was concerned that this wouldn't be worth the not insignificant price tag, but all in all I'm stoked, this jacket really does meet my expectations. Also great, prompt and friendly service from the staff; I would definitely recommend.

Great jacket, too bad they didn't bother to make my size

By: Backcountry.com Employee
December 8, 2006

I fell in love with this jacket, but it just proved to be too fitted for my purposes (cold weather skiing) in the size L. I don't know why they can't just make an XL in this jacket like they do in the Ama Dablam or the Guide Down. I had to exchange it for the Patagonia Down Patrol. Aside from not making it in a better size, I WAS stoked on this particular down jacket because of the really high, and really soft/comfortable collar to protect the face on those really really cold days. Also, the arms have incredible range of motion (I think they call it the butterfly or something), and the elbows and shoulders have extra beefy fabric to protect against ski edges and branches and what not. I was kind of broken-hearted at the prospect of returning it.
