Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot made the Men’s Mountain Down Jacket with the same warmth-retaining features used in a high-end, cozy sleeping bag. A powder skirt and a long length make this puffy sweet for butt-cold days on the slopes, and Marmot’s Angel Wing Movement design lets you move your arms without lifting the entire torso of this jacket. The 650-fill down insulation keeps you toasty, a waterproof breathable membrane comes in handy during ice climbing adventures, and a detachable hood decreases bulk when the skies are clear.

Bottom Line: It’s like a favorite down sleeping bag for when you’re mobile.

A Little too Warm for June

By:
June 29, 2011

You won't believe this but the day 6/26/11, after this Jacket arrived it snowed, the temp dropped to -5 with a howling wind, which is very odd for Southern Illinois. See I told you, you wouldn't believe it!. This a great Jacket @ a great price, the fit, large is perfect. I find no problems at all, very well made...looking forward to winter! Thanks BC, your service is 2nd to none.

I was wondering just how waterproof/weatherproof this jacket is. I am only looking to use it for backcountry day trips and as a ski jacket for day trips. Water wouldn't soak in during a snowy day (CO snow, so fairly dry stuff) would it? thanks

Very warm. Very comfortable.

By:
January 13, 2010

I picked this up as an alternative to another outdoors-expedition brand name down-filled parka that didn't really keep me warm despite its bulk. I didn't want to have a really bulky item, and this product has hit the spot so far.I live in Canada and can experience some seriously cold days and nights here.

Pros: Extremely warm, very light. Unlike some parkas that have a cotton-duck sort of shell, this Membrain shell actually breathes. I can get warm in a hurry under load, and opening this one up allows things to air out better than the traditional canvass-duck shells on parkas that I've been used to. Zipped up, its warmer than warm. I like the inner snow skirt and the shock-cord at the hem. Its also not too long (I am 6'3") which I like, as I didn't want a knee-length fabric sarcophagus, nor did I want a little bomber that always left my waist exposed. This is the perfect length for day to day urban-to-outdoor activity to base camp/low-output activity in very cold temps. The hood is really solid and form fitting, but when its not in use, its not always in the way like most hoods are. It goes tight and stealth behind the head, you don't even notice it, which is a first for me and all the hooded jackets I've used in the past. Hood can also detach, another plus in terms of flexibility. One thing I really like, is there's a nice strip of fleece at the neck that makes the jacket really comfortable once the zip is all the way up. The handwarmer pockets are huge and comfortable.

Cons: The zipper is a bit crappy for the cost and quality of the garment, but its not a deal breaker. Could stand a few more pockets (there are only the two handwarmers and one interior).

Overall. Very warm, light, compressable, comfortable and weatherproof yet breathable. I'd also like to see an electronics pocket with jacket-to-pocket wiring route hle such as we're seeing more and more these days. Otherwise, if you want warm, weatherproof and comfortable for low-activity pursuits, this is a great jacket. Its not for high output activity--at least not for me--but rather, for low to moderate activity use on the deadly cold days. If I was to try high-output activity in this thing even well below zero, I'd likely be too warm. Better for walking/ATV/ice fishing I would say.

**UPDATE**

After a month of wearing this jacket, it has proven itself to be the most comfortable, practical jacket I've ever owned. Cool and comfortable when its warmer, brilliantly warm in the snapping cold temps, the breathable outer shell really helps regulate temp much better than a hard cotton duck shell. Outstanding garment, best I ever bought.

By:

This jacket is great! It is incredibly warm and you can be perfectly comfortable wearing just a tee shirt unrneath even when temperatures are in the teens. I have been wearing it on hikes and the outside has not ripped even when I have caught it on the end of branches.

I am 5'10" and have bought the medium which fits quite well. The look is definitely puffy though. I have rated 4 stars as I have a 31" waist and the powder skirt is too losse to be of any use. Otherwise the jacket is perfect and I am extremely happy with the purchase.

Very nice jacket

By:
December 29, 2008

Bought this jacket mainly to wear around town and for some skiing. Skiing the groomers would be great for this jacket but I would not venture into the trees wearing it. The material is just not heavy enough. I generally wear this jacket with no more than a t-shirt underneath and it has kept me warm even in single digit temps.

The only minor gripe I have with the jacket is that the down is kinda thin on the undersides of the arms. Hopefully with more use it will spread out some.

Can't decide between Marmot Mountain Down Jacket or the MH

Can't decide between Marmot Mountain Down Jacket or the MH Sub Zero w/ Hood. I am returning the Sub Z w/o hood. Primarily because it is short fit on my back & losing a lot of feathers. The Sub Z w/ hood is a little longer but after reading about the Marmot-maybe Marmot down is s bit better? Any feedback on Marmot Jacket would be great. I usually take a large in MH stuff. I am 5'11 @ 188lbs. I probably take a large in Marmot.
Thanks

Thanks for the comments! I went with the Marmot Guides down 650 fill and couldn't be happier.
Size large, Deep Blue!
Does not lose feathers and the craftmanship is far superior than the MH Sub Z!

Just a comment that if the Sub Zero Jacket was too short and you decide to go with another Mountain Hardwear jacket, make sure you go with the Sub Zero Parka with a hood - its designed to be longer than the jacket.

I've tried both jackets and I believe the Marmot is a warmer, but also slightly bigger and heavier. I'm 5'5' 145 lbs and the mountain down in size medium runs a bit big on me. The marmot is a great durable jacket for weather below freezing. Might be too warm for active use, but for standing or walking in freezing temps its perfect.

I'm assuming this jacket destroys the guides down jacket....true? I'm rolling with a stupid Nuptse jacket which is soon to be owned by my nephew. I live here in the greatest state Montana, but might spend some time in AK, so I'm looking to upgrade without looking like a trusty loser from back east, and I love Marmot's gear. I have a ton of their other gear, so after I looked at everything I think this might be a good middle-of-the road down coat, even though it's a 650.....any thoughts?

My choice came down to the Cloudveil Down patrol, Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Parka, and the Marmot. The Marmot and the MHW were both warm, light, and comfortable. Both had great hood designs but the Marmot didn't have any chest pockets. So I went with the MHW. I like to have quick access to my stuff and the Marmot only has two hand pockets and one inside. Not real convenient.

Just right

By:
November 18, 2008

I live in SW Alaska, where it gets cold early and stays that way. Was looking for an everyday, wear on the 4-wheeler, layer underneath, down jacket. This jacket has the room (I'm a big one-6'3" and 270 lbs) to layer and be warm and comfortable when riding our basic transport-an atv. Wind chill is not a problem with the "MemBrain" fabric outer shell. Seems to be well made, but only time will tell. This is a big improvement over the "Pillsbury Doughboy" feel of my heavy parka.

MARMOT MOUNTAIN DOWN JACKET

By:
February 2, 2011

I bought this jacket to deal with the coldest of days here in New England. I have so far found it to be reasonably light weight but really nicely warm as well. It is a delight!!!
I usually have difficulty fitting jackets due to very long arms (36 inch shirt sleeve) and a broad chest (48/50 US) but this jacket fits incredibly perfect for me (Size XXL) while still allowing potential for layers when I desire. The sleeve length is generous.
I am however shocked at the HORRIBLE zipper on this jacket. It would be flimsy for even a toddlers summer coat!!!
I have never had a jacket of this type with such a tiny, weak, and sketchy zipper.
Other then that, I love this jacket and use it nearly daily ( cursing the idiot who selected that zipper daily too!)
If you are on the fence, BUY IT ! At this price I feel it is a good bargain

The Mountain Down Jacket's shell is made of Membrian, which is a laminated waterproof, windproof and breathable fabric, so it should do really well blocking wet snow and wind. However, the seams aren't taped. If your looking for the ultimate in weather proof-ness check out Marmot's Big Parka or Yukon parka which do have taped seams.

Marmot MJ

By:
December 16, 2010

I ordered this jacket online, not this company and wore it last week when we had an 8 degree day with 40 mph winds in the midwest. I darn near froze in this jacket. The arms did not have any down in them. Maybe I received a faulty jacket, but it was cold. It was ok for temps in the 20s with a wind, but nothing less.
The jacket was very attractive and well constructed. I loved the waist cinch that was snaps and the hood was great too. I really liked the features but the jacket was cold.
I ended up going to a story and purchased a First Ascent XV. The features are not near as nice as the Marmot, but the FA15 is a darn warm jacket. It is very impressive with 850 goose down. I will keep it. I will never climb a mountain, but the FA15 works for walking the dog and waiting for the bus on cold days.
The last goose down jacket i purchased was in the mid 1980 and it was COMFY brand, made in South Dakota. I expected to find a jacket of that quality, but I could not find one. That coat is still like new after all these years, but it doesn't have a hood and I wanted a coat with a hood.

My son loves this jacket. He had another similar Marmot down jacket that he lived in constantly for 2 years in Jackson Hole. He loves the powder skirt inside the jacket which his old one did not have. He does not layer that much under the jacket even in the coldest temps. The jacket is a large and he is 5'11', 185 lbs and it fits great.

November 3, 2008

I was looking for a serious winter down parka. This isn't it. The sewn-through construction and megre fill just don't provide enough warmth. I wore it indoors one afternoon for about 30 mins and didn't break a sweat -- not a good sign it'd keep anyone warm in actual outdoor use. Too bad, because the cut fits and looks nice, and it's fairly lightweight. So, I guess that Marmot's recommendation of "urban" use is appropriate, but it's not my choice for a mountaineering garment.

Jeff - I'd order the large size mainly for what you're wearing underneath. What you don't need is a constricting outer down jacket..Dustin- Id have to disagree, I am the same size as you JK, and I own last years Marmot Mountain, and I would suggest a Medium, as it is what I own. I live in cold temperatures, easily 10 below throughout the winter, and rarely have to layer, its seriously that warm. But when layering is a factor, this jacket has plenty of room for multiple layers, a medium is not small by any means. Hope this helps.

I only got this jacket at the the end of last winter so I haven't worn it a lot, but it is very warm. a huge selling point for me was the waterproofness. my previous puffy was fairly water resistant, but still wasn't great. it's nice not to have to worry about it. the hood attachment is also super secure. I'm 5'8", 135 and the small fits me really well. the length is long enough to still cover my lower back when sitting, but it doesn't feel like a parka either.
